#FUTURESLAM PROGRAMME
PART 1 – INTRODUCING
THE BIG TRENDS
Very smart machines (AI)
The reality of new realities
(AR/VR/MR)
Everything is
connected (IoT)
PART 2 – WHAT DOES
IT ALL MEAN?
Designing the future
The cyborg visitor –
interacting with
future audiences
Museums in a post-truth world,
information consumption
Being kept informed of what is
happening out there in the digital
world - what the future could look
like and how the Museum could
be part of this. This big picture
thinking is fascinating.
Specialist guest
speakers who know
much more than
I do about a topic
are the highlight.
Made me want to learn
more digital skills, such
as building a chat bot or
a twitter bot, and coding.
I am more confident about
finding solutions to everyday
problems within technology.
That said, I am cautious about
tech being the answer to
EVERYTHING. It's not.

  1. Tena koutou katoa Bonjour tout le monde Hi everyone I’m Kelly Skelton I’m the Head of Digital Experience at Tāmaki Paenga Hira, Auckland War Memorial Museum in Aotearoa New Zealand I’m delighted to be here today to bring you a slice of an event series we’ve been running internally just for staff, called #FutureSlam.
  2. The Rocky road slice is relevant as we serve it at the events so it’s one of the drawcards. I actually brought some over all the way from NZ for some lucky members of the audience but you’ll have to wait until the end! It’s also an interesting metaphor for how we navigate technology and digital today. Sometimes the road is rocky.
  3. There’s so much noise about technology, disruption AR, VR, MR, Internet of Things, AI, cyborgs to name just a few What does it all mean? How do we as digital professionals help cut through the clutter and support our colleagues to get on board?
  4. Well – that’s where Auckland Museum’s FutureSlam event series comes in Once a month, one hour long – just for staff Approx 6-8 sessions per year
  5. Lure people in with food All staff are invited – approx 60 staff attend each event. We video the sessions for staff to view who can’t attend
  6. We have a mix of external and internal speakers, specialists in their field
  7. We mix it up and do talks, demos, panel sessions, some group workshop activities
  8. Started in 2016 as The Digital Ideas Brewery. Internal speakers only. Topics included 3D scanning/printing, digital content creation, VR, collection imaging. At the end of 2016 we asked colleagues how they’d found the series. 1. Positive feedback, staff enjoyed the chance to explore tech and digital trends with colleagues in other teams. 2. Rocky road is the best. 3. They did however feel that the purpose of the sessions was unclear. 4. Too much idea generation – there were some frustrations around this.
  9. So – we rebranded to #Futureslam and removed the expectation around ideas generation And set clear objectives and a structure for the year ahead
  10. 4 key objectives Gist – enable and encourage digital thinking across the organisation
  11. We planned out the programme for 2017 Firstly – sessions around the tech Invited external experts in to explain and demo the technology and show how it’s being used, both in museums and a wider context Then – part 2 was focussed on the future – how future audiences might interact and consume information. We felt it was a successful year and solid programme but we needed feedback from colleagues so early this year conducted another survey.
  12. These are a few bits of feedback. They really valued the big picture thinking, introduction to new technologies, us bringing external specialists in to present. Many spoke of being more confident and feeling more informed about technology and digital. Which is great as that’s what we’re wanting to achieve by running the series.
  13. We also asked what topics they’d like covered at #FutureSlams this year We’re using all of this feedback to help inform this year’s programme. We’re also looking at extending the audience beyond only Museum staff as there is interest from the wider GLAM sector in Auckland Exciting times ahead
  14. Thought I’d share some tactics to run a successful programme 1. Planning is key – set objectives and plan the programme early. Start small to get something off the ground initially. 2. Advertise the events internally, talk to colleagues, get them excited/interested. 3. Ask them what THEY want before you start and get feedback throughout the series. Make sure they’re getting value. Change what’s not working. 4. Find good speakers – internal or external – brief them well so they understand the audience, objectives, format, timings. All of that stuff. 5. Balance the format of the sessions during the season – speakers, workshops, panel discussions, demos 6. Finally, lure them in with tasty treats
  15. Thank you, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like to chat further as I’d love to hear what you’re doing or thinking of doing within your organisations. Tena koutou Tena koutou Tena koutou katoa Oh and finally – does anyone know who is the Prime Minister of New Zealand? ANSWER  Jacinda Ardern
