USA And Canada – Decrease in Slaughter houses and
Increased Carcass weights , maintained production.
Australia - Maintained Production, Increase rain and dry
weather, Stock retention.
INDIA – 70% Export- Carabeef – Vietnam And Egypt.
9. POULTRY MEAT
INCREASE - 0.9% (115.8 million tonnes).
USA – 2015 suffered from avian influenza.
BRAZIL – 6.5% increase.
EU
CHINA,SOUTH AFRICA – decrease 5%, less consumer
demand, increased competition from imports, limited exports
possibilities.
OVINE MEAT
INCREASE - 0.6% (14.1 million tonnes).
China, India, Nigeria, Pakistan – Major producers due to
favourable pasture condition.
Increase world trade.
PIG MEAT – Decrease 0.6%, 116.5 million tonnes.

Two decades INCREASE 4.5% and in past 5 years 27%
fast annual growth.

India exports frozen and chilled meat more than 54 countries
Major exports deboned and deglanded - buffalo meat 98%
11. EXPORT OF MEAT
Buffalo meat is major export and has increased in past 5
years.
Sheep and goat export decreased in past 5 years – due to
reduction in import by Saudi Arabia, Market reopened will
increase.
CHALLENGES AND OPPURTINITIES:
Setting up abattoir and meat processing plant.
Technology to rise male buffalo calves for meat production.
Buffalo rearing backward integration contractual farming.
Establishing disease free zones.

58 % buffalo ,14.7% cattle
Important buyers Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, UAE,
Saudi Arabia, Egypt
Carabeef – UP > Punjab > Maharastra
UP – Highest number of abattoirs cum meat processing exports
units.
14. Ministry of food processing industries (MFPI) has established
National Meat and Poultry Processing Board (NMPPB) at
New Delhi for clean and wholesome meat production.
FACTORS AFFECTING INDIAN MEAT INDUSTRY
Last few years meat free diet and vegeterian increased.
Religious taboos.
Unprecedented opportunities, meat substitutes.
India has largest non meat eating eating community (31%
lacto veg, 9% consume eggs but no meat).
PETA , NGOs, celebrities lead campaigns and encourage low
meat or meat free diet.
Indian consumers prefer hot meat (fresh meat) resulting in
less demand of frozen meat.
Lack of sufficient cold chain infrastructure for structure.

16. Meat production in India has seen a healthy growth
10th five year plan (2006-07) - 2.3 million tonnes.
11th five year plan (2011-12) - 5.5 million tonnes.
12th five year plan (2012-13) - 5.9 million tonnes.
In the year (2013-14) -6.3 million tonnes.

19. CONCLUSION
Meat promotes livestock development, livelihood security.
Domestic consumption – hot meat( sheep, goat, pig, poultry).
Buffalo, Cattle and Sheep – Export.
Meat in Open Premises – Dirt, Contamination, other
Pollutants.
Traditional production system, unhygienic practices ruined
image of Indian Meat Industry.
Indian meat – less fat 4% compared to 15 – 20 % fat in meat
of developed countries.
Meat in India has less growth promoters, therapeutic
residues and mad cow disease.
Present international trend is favourable for low fat meat and
also favours Indian meat in International market.
