There is a cold war brewing between Google and facebook for dominance on the social web. You see facebook like buttons embedded on websites, landing pages and now on the Bing search page – they are everywhere. Google has struggled to gain traction in the social arena. And now as social becomes more and more a part of search Google is fighting for survival. The soft launch of the +1 button occurred 8 weeks ago. I participated in the test run of +1 and found it odd and lacking. To +1 something on the SERP seems at the wrong place and time. Now they have announced the launch of the button for web pages. Initial feedback from the web developers is that button is difficult to embed, it doesn’t flow well with the other social buttons and already we are seeing some push back. It will be Important to pay attention to the evolution of this feature as it could have tremendous impact on search results if it gains traction. Currently Wordpress blogs have been left out and you cannot implement the +1 button on them. However, watch for that to change as well with powerful community of wordpress developers.Currently there is not ability to measure the impact of the +1 feature through google webmaster tools or google analytics but expect to see that change soon.
Bing has the advantage on this feature on their Search pages because of the wide use of facebook. Google will struggle here. Many people have google accounts but haven’t done much with building their social community with it. This will hurt the use and impact of the +1 button if that dynamic doesn’t change
Some new things coming from YouTube. First is the launch of the Promoted Videos. The interface is very similar to googleadwords. You choose the video, create the ad, choose the search terms you want your video to show up for and set your budget. Pretty straight forward. It will be very interesting to test this out and to see what impact on website traffic and conversions this will create.Second is the HD Preview images. While videos have been running in HD, the previews (the little still image that you click on to decide if you are going to view the video or not) have not been in HD. YouTube’s user research indicates that the preview can make or break whether or not a user will click the video to wathc it.Third and most significant is the ability to now embed the YouTube player on your website WITHOUT the YouTube logo on it
Be careful when picking your search words. Users search much differently in YouTube than they do in Google. What may be an effective search term or phrase for you in Google may have little to no search volume in YouTube.
Here is how a YouTube branded embedded player with out an HD preview currently looks.
Having the embedded player display with the YouTube logo is simple matter of adding a snippet of code as you see here. The embedded player will appear with out the YouTube logo, except for in Pause mode it will appear in the upper right corner of the paused video. Currently NEW HD video will display the HD preview. Older HD videos will have the preview switched to HD in the near future.
