1. Katie Engberg
Duke Farms Education Internship Hillsborough, NJ
Duke Farms is a 2,740 acre property of native wetland, meadow, and forest that serves as a model of
environmental stewardship to the public. As an intern, I created environmental education for visitors
and organized and developed materials for two festivals attended by over 3,000 visitors. For Duke
Farms stewardship, I created trails, identified and removed multiple invasive species on the property,
planted native species and collected native seeds, and trapped and banded birds using mist netting.
Environmental Research Easton, PA
Worked on team research projects studying water quality, plankton assemblages, and invasive crab
species in the Raritan Bay system, as well as a study on water quality and macroinvertebrate
assemblages around dams scheduled to be removed in the Bushkill Creek, with 6 years or pre-removal
data - the most ever collected for any study. Skills learned included nutrient analysis using a HACH
spectrophotometer, plankton and macroinvertebrate identification, use of an YSI multiparameter meter,
Schindler-Patalas trap, Hester-Dendy, Surber sampler, and Van Dorn sampler, and data analysis
techniques including Simpson and Shannon Biodiversity Index.
Nalven Research Scholarship and Honors Thesis Easton, PA
Completed independent research studying the impact of road proximity on the movement patterns of
vernal pool-dependent wood frogs. Led a team of 40 volunteers to assist with setup of the research.
Research included periodic monitoring of vernal pool water quality and the productivity and
movement of wood frogs over their full life cycle, as well as a literature review of over 150 research
papers. The research was expanded into a written honors thesis, which was presented as an oral
presentation at Lafayette College and the Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences Conference, and is
currently in the revision stage for publication in the Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences Journal. Skills
learned included statistical data analysis using t-test, anova, and chi-square analysis, scientific writing
skills, composition of tables and figures, public presentation skills, and the ability to convey complex
science to the general public.
