A Message From
3
Partners and Friends,
Thanks for all you do to put youth on a path to success! Young people in our community
need direction from others who have walked the path they’re on already. It helps when
someone knows the way and assists them to discover where they’re headed.
Many children we serve are gaining self-esteem from their mentor, learning to accept
themselves as they are right now -- growing and worthwhile. Sharing these positive
messages with youth over time helps them gain confidence and achieve success.
Time is a valuable resource for children in our program. They benefit from long-lasting
friendships that exceed the national average!
Big Brothers Big Sisters of America honored our agency as 2013 Quality Award winner.
We were named one of the top achieving affiliates from the 340 agencies in the national
mentoring network! Agencies receiving the Quality Award have exceeded the national
average for program performance in several areas. Big Brothers Big Sisters of America
CEO, Charles Pierson, acknowledged the agency’s success during his visit here in
April. At national conference in June he recognized our agency as 6th in the nation for
donations raised during Bowl For Kids’ Sake!
Your participation with the agency makes important
differences for children and our community. Your positive
impact is seen and valued as you Volunteer, Advocate and
Donate.
Thanks for all that you do!

Sincerely,
Linda Henecke

The impact seen by the Big Brothers Big Sisters program can often be experienced in
the initial match meeting, during monthly activities, or even by the child’s smile. But for
Meryshia, it’s been that and more. Matched twelve years ago, she was six years old and
had a challenging home life, routinely bounced back and forth between her parents. This
led to a frequent change in schools and a lack of connection and social acceptance.
Then Gina came into her life, interested in becoming her mentor. They shared interests
in painting nails and wearing makeup. Since then, Gina has incorporated Meryshia into
her family events, weddings, and holidays. Meryshia participates in family photos for the
annual Christmas card and they plan “carnivals” each September, their shared birthday
month. It was connections like these, events of belonging, which Meryshia reports have
been her favorite outings as a match.
The depth of their connection has expanded far beyond “hanging out” though. While
Gina’s career is in the beauty industry,
Meryshia developed cosmetology as her
passion, as well. Gina committed herself
to helping in any way she could and it
began with assisting Meryshia to obtain a
position at City Looks Salon at 15 years old.
Meryshia committed to that job throughout
high school at Jefferson, where she recently
graduated with honors. Together they
have searched for scholarships to build
Meryshia’s future; and today, she is setting
her goals high by attending Capri in the fall.
One day when Meryshia works in her
own salon, she wants to “meet new people,
have a very good connection with them and
make them feel good about themselves as
they walk out of the salon.” Her vision speaks volumes to the type of person Meryshia is
and the interpersonal skills she has developed after 12 years of being mentored. Meryshia
attributes her success to Gina, stating, “she taught me to never give up, go after what you
want and make good decisions.”
Gina’s always been a consistent person for Meryshia, and that was proven recently at
the Celebration of Friendship. An emotionally-driven Gina shared how proud she was just
to be Meryshia’s Big Sister. Five of Gina’s family members were present at the celebration
just to support Meryshia and show how proud they were, as well. Gina’s impact goes far
beyond being a special adult in Meryshia’s life; she has paved her way for a successful and
rewarding future.
Stories like Gina and Meryshia’s are not uncommon among our Cedar Rapids and East
Central Iowa agency. When entering a mentoring relationship, the volunteer is typically
hoping to support a child in need of a positive role model. What we find is that volunteers
see just as much of a personal benefit. Many volunteers testify that they are getting more
out of the match than the Little, and the commitment often leads the match to surpass the
one year requirement. During 2012-2013, 68% of our matches were together more than 12
months. Based on youth outcomes, this commitment to a match relationship allows for in
educational, avoidance of risky behaviors, and socio-emotional competency, all impacting
the child more than ever imagined by a volunteer.

Highlights
Program
5
Mentoring agencies across the country match adult peers, colleagues, or students with
youth in an effort to make the future better for the respective mentee. Big Brothers Big
Sisters is known for supporting that relationship even a step further. Under a nationally-
researched, evidence-based practice, the Service Delivery Model provides our agencies
with a guide for engaging with volunteers, parents or guardians, and youth to achieve
a safe, long, strong match with the best possible youth outcomes. One of the key
components to a successful match through Big Brothers Big Sisters is the support,
monitoring, and continued engagement received by a professionally-trained Match
Support Specialist.
It is the requirement of these staff members to coach, assess, monitor, and measure a
caseload of roughly 100 matches at any given time. Through countless phone, email,
and in-person contacts, this team of staff diligently work with matches and families to
provide support and resources, all while keeping child safety a number one priority.
Each of these contacts must be conducted in a thorough, engaging manner, and must
be done within a 10-day grace period each month.
While this is a tough feat for many staff who are balancing other projects and events,
our team recognizes the value added from this consistent dialogue. During the 2012-13
fiscal year the Match Support team of 10 exceeded the expectations for quality contacts
as compared to the national expectations and averages seen across the country. It’s
because of this determination and reliability that our agency is nationally awarded with
quality recognition.

Every donation received helps put area youth on a path to success! Each child is matched
with their very own mentor, sharing similar interests, hobbies and an opportunity to explore
more about themselves and the world. Research shows that children who are involved
and feel supported are more likely to have healthy relationships and strong academic
performance and less likely to engage in risky behaviors. Supporting Big Brothers Big
Sisters is making an investment in our children, our community and our future.

Bowl For Kids’ Sake ••• Participants are invited to lace up their bowling shoes, form
or join a team and raise money to support youth mentoring! This is an opportunity for
companies and individuals to make a positive impact in their community while having
fun and raising awareness about the challenges facing local youth. It also provides
an opportunity for Big Brothers Big Sisters to sincerely thank all who help carry
out the mission. All donations are invested in building and sustaining long-lasting
relationships for children facing adversity, helping to change the trajectory of each
child’s life.
Big Magic Breakfast ••• This free breakfast event educates and inspires community
members about the mission, vision, daily work and positive impact one-to-one
mentoring makes for area youth and the whole community. Wonderful stories are
shared about how mentors have changed children’s lives for the better, forever. Guests
are asked to make or consider a financial gift, vital to the program’s success, and
are invited to become a member of the Big Magic Society. Community partners and
sponsors join us in promoting the positive community impact and opportunities for
youth to be successful.

• Academic support
• A few hours of your time each month
Big Brothers Big Sisters creates opportunities to help put youth on a path to success!
This year, we celebrate 17 match relationships as they end their formal participation in
our program and embark on the next part of their journey! We are confident that the
experiences, conversations and memories they have shared over the years will help
guide them to successful futures. History tells us many of these friendships will endure,
like two Mike’s who were matched in 1991 when Little Brother Mike was just 11 years
old! They still get together and enjoy sharing hobbies and conversation. The positive
impact of youth mentoring encourages youth to maximize their educational opportunities
and make sound choices as they become adults and contributing members of the
community.

Little Sister Adrianne Destined for Continuing Success
In 2005, a 10-year old girl named Adrianne insisted her mother call Big Brothers Big
Sisters in hopes of finding someone to hang out and do fun activities with her. She was
soon matched with Katie as her Big Sister. Katie has been a caring adult and played
a significant role in Adrianne’s life beside her grandma, her mom and her sister. As
their friendship evolved over the years, Katie has watched Adrianne grow into a caring,
hardworking and outgoing young woman, who is willing to achieve her educational goals
and fulfill her dream of being a bilingual speech pathologist.
In high school, Adrianne became a member of the National Honor Society, an AP Scholar,
and an Anna Purna Ghosh Advanced Placement Incentive Program Fund recipient. Her
future plans include studying at the University of Iowa with a double major in Speech and
Hearing Science and Spanish Language. With Katie’s support, Adrianne has been actively
involved in the community and numerous extracurricular activities. She said that Katie has
been a great role model for her and their friendship will stay forever.
Katie and Adrianne often explored new
things and tried various activities. They
went to baseball games, movies, baked
cookies or made necklaces together.
The wonderful thing about this match
is that they get along so well and
constantly learn from each other. Katie
believes that her Little Sister Adrianne
is destined for great things in the
future. “I’m very excited to see where
she goes and extremely proud to be her
Big Sister”, stated Katie.
Corey, Adrianne’s mother, has been very supportive of the match relationship. She
appreciates how much Katie has supported her daughter by coming to Adrianne’s games
and seeing her in the school play. “Katie is like a true sister to Adrianne; she is a part of
the family now”, stated Corey.

Young people in our community need direction from others who have walked the path they’re on already. It helps when someone knows the way and assists them to discover where they’re headed. Many children we serve are gaining self-esteem from their mentor, learning to accept themselves as they are right now -- growing and worthwhile. Sharing these positive messages with youth over time helps them gain confidence and achieve success. Time is a valuable resource for children in our program. They benefit from long-lasting friendships that exceed the national average! Big Brothers Big Sisters of America honored our agency as 2013 Quality Award winner. We were named one of the top achieving affiliates from the 340 agencies in the national mentoring network! Agencies receiving the Quality Award have exceeded the national average for program performance in several areas. Big Brothers Big Sisters of America CEO, Charles Pierson, acknowledged the agency’s success during his visit here in April. At national conference in June he recognized our agency as 6th in the nation for donations raised during Bowl For Kids’ Sake! Your participation with the agency makes important differences for children and our community. Your positive impact is seen and valued as you Volunteer, Advocate and Donate. Thanks for all that you do! Sincerely, Linda Henecke President and CEO 38 26 25 15 Average Match Length in Months Community School Based National Average Our Average
  • 4. Make An Impact Long Lasting Relations “She taught me to go after what you want and make good decisions.” 4   The impact seen by the Big Brothers Big Sisters program can often be experienced in the initial match meeting, during monthly activities, or even by the child’s smile. But for Meryshia, it’s been that and more. Matched twelve years ago, she was six years old and had a challenging home life, routinely bounced back and forth between her parents. This led to a frequent change in schools and a lack of connection and social acceptance.   Then Gina came into her life, interested in becoming her mentor. They shared interests in painting nails and wearing makeup. Since then, Gina has incorporated Meryshia into her family events, weddings, and holidays. Meryshia participates in family photos for the annual Christmas card and they plan “carnivals” each September, their shared birthday month. It was connections like these, events of belonging, which Meryshia reports have been her favorite outings as a match.   The depth of their connection has expanded far beyond “hanging out” though. While Gina’s career is in the beauty industry, Meryshia developed cosmetology as her passion, as well. Gina committed herself to helping in any way she could and it began with assisting Meryshia to obtain a position at City Looks Salon at 15 years old. Meryshia committed to that job throughout high school at Jefferson, where she recently graduated with honors. Together they have searched for scholarships to build Meryshia’s future; and today, she is setting her goals high by attending Capri in the fall.   One day when Meryshia works in her own salon, she wants to “meet new people, have a very good connection with them and make them feel good about themselves as they walk out of the salon.” Her vision speaks volumes to the type of person Meryshia is and the interpersonal skills she has developed after 12 years of being mentored. Meryshia attributes her success to Gina, stating, “she taught me to never give up, go after what you want and make good decisions.”   Gina’s always been a consistent person for Meryshia, and that was proven recently at the Celebration of Friendship. An emotionally-driven Gina shared how proud she was just to be Meryshia’s Big Sister. Five of Gina’s family members were present at the celebration just to support Meryshia and show how proud they were, as well. Gina’s impact goes far beyond being a special adult in Meryshia’s life; she has paved her way for a successful and rewarding future.   Stories like Gina and Meryshia’s are not uncommon among our Cedar Rapids and East Central Iowa agency. When entering a mentoring relationship, the volunteer is typically hoping to support a child in need of a positive role model. What we find is that volunteers see just as much of a personal benefit. Many volunteers testify that they are getting more out of the match than the Little, and the commitment often leads the match to surpass the one year requirement. During 2012-2013, 68% of our matches were together more than 12 months. Based on youth outcomes, this commitment to a match relationship allows for in educational, avoidance of risky behaviors, and socio-emotional competency, all impacting the child more than ever imagined by a volunteer. Gina & Meryshia 2013
  • 5. Highlights Program 5 Mentoring agencies across the country match adult peers, colleagues, or students with youth in an effort to make the future better for the respective mentee. Big Brothers Big Sisters is known for supporting that relationship even a step further. Under a nationally- researched, evidence-based practice, the Service Delivery Model provides our agencies with a guide for engaging with volunteers, parents or guardians, and youth to achieve a safe, long, strong match with the best possible youth outcomes. One of the key components to a successful match through Big Brothers Big Sisters is the support, monitoring, and continued engagement received by a professionally-trained Match Support Specialist. It is the requirement of these staff members to coach, assess, monitor, and measure a caseload of roughly 100 matches at any given time. Through countless phone, email, and in-person contacts, this team of staff diligently work with matches and families to provide support and resources, all while keeping child safety a number one priority. Each of these contacts must be conducted in a thorough, engaging manner, and must be done within a 10-day grace period each month. While this is a tough feat for many staff who are balancing other projects and events, our team recognizes the value added from this consistent dialogue. During the 2012-13 fiscal year the Match Support team of 10 exceeded the expectations for quality contacts as compared to the national expectations and averages seen across the country. It’s because of this determination and reliability that our agency is nationally awarded with quality recognition. This is an opportunity for companies and individuals to make a positive impact in their community while having fun and raising awareness about the challenges facing local youth. It also provides an opportunity for Big Brothers Big Sisters to sincerely thank all who help carry out the mission. All donations are invested in building and sustaining long-lasting relationships for children facing adversity, helping to change the trajectory of each child’s life. Big Magic Breakfast ••• This free breakfast event educates and inspires community members about the mission, vision, daily work and positive impact one-to-one mentoring makes for area youth and the whole community. Wonderful stories are shared about how mentors have changed children’s lives for the better, forever. Guests are asked to make or consider a financial gift, vital to the program’s success, and are invited to become a member of the Big Magic Society. Community partners and sponsors join us in promoting the positive community impact and opportunities for youth to be successful. Events Signature Recruitment Margin With a waiting list of 118 children, 77% of them are young boys looking for a positive role model, often an adult male to confide in. Yet, ur volunteer pool is made up of only 35% men, focring some youth to wait 6-12 months before being matched. Help close this gap by connecting us with men in your network who want to make a difference. The impact is Big.

  • 8. Big Brothers Big Sisters creates opportunities to help put youth on a path to success! This year, we celebrate 17 match relationships as they end their formal participation in our program and embark on the next part of their journey! We are confident that the experiences, conversations and memories they have shared over the years will help guide them to successful futures. History tells us many of these friendships will endure, like two Mike’s who were matched in 1991 when Little Brother Mike was just 11 years old! They still get together and enjoy sharing hobbies and conversation. The positive impact of youth mentoring encourages youth to maximize their educational opportunities and make sound choices as they become adults and contributing members of the community. She was soon matched with Katie as her Big Sister. Katie has been a caring adult and played a significant role in Adrianne’s life beside her grandma, her mom and her sister. As their friendship evolved over the years, Katie has watched Adrianne grow into a caring, hardworking and outgoing young woman, who is willing to achieve her educational goals and fulfill her dream of being a bilingual speech pathologist. In high school, Adrianne became a member of the National Honor Society, an AP Scholar, and an Anna Purna Ghosh Advanced Placement Incentive Program Fund recipient. Her future plans include studying at the University of Iowa with a double major in Speech and Hearing Science and Spanish Language. With Katie’s support, Adrianne has been actively involved in the community and numerous extracurricular activities. She said that Katie has been a great role model for her and their friendship will stay forever. Katie and Adrianne often explored new things and tried various activities. They went to baseball games, movies, baked cookies or made necklaces together. The wonderful thing about this match is that they get along so well and constantly learn from each other. Katie believes that her Little Sister Adrianne is destined for great things in the future. “I’m very excited to see where she goes and extremely proud to be her Big Sister”, stated Katie. Corey, Adrianne’s mother, has been very supportive of the match relationship. She appreciates how much Katie has supported her daughter by coming to Adrianne’s games and seeing her in the school play. “Katie is like a true sister to Adrianne; she is a part of the family now”, stated Corey.
