  1. Peace sign = offensive in british culture. Goes back to the Hundred Years War, the French would cut off the two bowmen’s fingers of the English they captured. They would then make the peace sign to rub it in that they could win a way by using 2 fingers (Wikipedia) Dog- there is a play by Osvaldo Dragún. He has a play called “The Man who turned into a dog” (in Spanish) where a man who works hard to make it in the world, working odd jobs, turns into a dog. Dogs are obedient to their masters, so ultimately, the world made him become its obedient worker: a dog.
  2. Question: In American culture, seeing a skull is often a symbol of death, especially with the rise of crime scene shows such as NCIS and CSI. But in ancient Latin American art, this was not the case. What pre-Columbian (pre-Columbus arrival) indigenous group used the skull? What did it sybolize? Answer: Aztecs. They used skulls as a sign of resurrection. Especially when it came to creating pieces that were designed for the gods. TIE BREAKER: There is a Mexican food that is also used in Spain. The items have the same name, but are made of completely different ingredients. Hint: It’s a staple in a lot of Mexican dishes that we eat.
  3. It’s often thought that the iceberg is a representative of the impact of society on the conscious and subconscious part of the human mind. It’s also a good model of Surrealism. Name a painting by a Latin American surrealist that used universal symbols to demonstrate the subconscious part of the mind. Answer: Antonio Ruiz, the Biclycle race Remedios Varo Leonora Carrington Frida Kahlo Wilfredo Lam Matta (Roberto Matta Echaurren) Diego Rivera TIE BREAKER: There is a Mexican food that is also used in Spain. The items have the same name, but are made of completely different ingredients. Hint: It’s a staple in a lot of Mexican dishes that we eat.
  4. Mary, often seen as a religious symbol of motherhood and peace , is known by another name in Mexico. Tell me her other name as well as possible meanings she has in Latin American art Answer: Virgen of Guadalupe Liberation Control (because the Spanish catholics forced the indigenous peoples to covert to catholicism) TIE BREAKER: There is a Mexican food that is also used in Spain. The items have the same name, but are made of completely different ingredients. Hint: It’s a staple in a lot of Mexican dishes that we eat.
  5. The four leaf clover is often considered a sign of luck, especially during the spring time. In Mexican tradition, there is an Easter activity that requires the smashing of a hollowed out edible item. Name the item and the Spanish term for it (Bonus point if you can find the European history) Answer: Egg Cascarones Filled with confetti. If the egg breaks when your friend smashes it on your head, you will have good luck. Marco Polo found out about these in CHINA. They were filled with perfume/scented powders. They became all the rage in Italy and Spain and were often given as gifts. It reached mexico in the 1800s. TIE BREAKER: There is a Mexican food that is also used in Spain. The items have the same name, but are made of completely different ingredients. Hint: It’s a staple in a lot of Mexican dishes that we eat.
  6. There is a luxury brand of cars that is named after a Mesoamerican symbol. This symbol was often regarded as “from another world” because it was often only seen at night. It is also regarded as the “king of all animals.” It is said that is a symbol of life and fertility. Name this creature. Answer: Jaguar. TIE BREAKER: There is a Mexican food that is also used in Spain. The items have the same name, but are made of completely different ingredients. Hint: It’s a staple in a lot of Mexican dishes that we eat.
  7. Moving on to other aspects of cultural intelligence, there are a few things that you need to know, especially when it comes to other societal structures In Latin america and some countries of europe, there is something called a kinship family system. This means that in society, family is regarded as the most important thing in your life. If someone in your family is having a problem, everyone joins in to help. Because the family is seen as so important, it also means that people know A LOT about their ancestors and the origins of their bloodline. Having a supportive family makes you seem “rich” In america, we have the “nuclear family” system. We care mostly about our grandparents, parents, and children. There is not as much emphasis on our ancestors because our society tells us that you have to provide for the family in order to be “rich.” Does that make sense?
  8. Before you travel, and especially before you make an artistic production, you need to do some research on the different societies you’re going to be seeing or portraying. It’s important to keep in mind the views on women, family, the history of the country, the economic climate, and especially the language. Because there might be phrases or terms you might not understand or may be insulting. (For instance, do NOT SAY FANNY IN THE UK)
  9. Correct answer: B or C. The husband who does not out earn his wife is seen as
  10. Correct answer: C. Given an even amount of roses is seen as inviting death. They ultimately just told you you should die.
  11. Correct answer: B. Having an open circle in one hand being covered by a flat palm is an insult to a person’s nether regions
  12. Correct answe: C. In saudi arabia, men holding hands is a sign of showing respect
  13. Correct answer: D. In greece, waving a five finger hand is the equivalent of “up yours”
