In a thrilling encounter of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Plate Group, Puducherry emerged victorious with
a convincing 74-run win over Meghalaya. The match, held on October 8, 2018, at the Anand Cricket
Stadium, witnessed a commanding performance from the Puducherry team, led by captain Rohit
Damodaran and seasoned campaigner Paras Dogra.
Puducherry Innings:
Winning the toss, Puducherry elected to bat first. The opening pair of Angadu Narayanan and
Damodaran Rohit got off to a solid start, building a partnership of 99 runs. Narayanan played an
aggressive knock of 37 runs off 42 deliveries before being stumped by wicketkeeper Raj Biswa off
the bowling of Biswa.
Rohit continued to anchor the innings and reached his half-century, scoring 55 runs off 78 balls.
However, he was dismissed by Meghalaya's Dippu Sangma in the 21st over. Abhishek Nayar then
took charge, contributing a valuable 50 runs off just 53 deliveries before being trapped lbw by Mark
Ingty.
The highlight of the Puducherry innings was the exceptional batting display by Paras Dogra. The
experienced middle-order batsman showcased his class, remaining unbeaten on a magnificent 136
runs off only 97 balls. His innings included 12 boundaries and 7 towering sixes, propelling
Puducherry to a commanding total of 324/5 in their allotted 50 overs.
Meghalaya Innings:
Chasing a challenging target of 325 runs, Meghalaya got off to a shaky start as they lost opener Raj
Biswa early, dismissed by Pankaj Singh after scoring just 10 runs. However, Babloo Passah and Punit
Bisht steadied the innings with a partnership of 42 runs. Passah's innings of 21 runs was cut short
due to a run-out caused by a brilliant fielding effort from Fabid Ahmed.
Puducherry continued to apply pressure on the Meghalaya batsmen, and wickets fell at regular
intervals. Punit Bisht was stumped by wicketkeeper Baskaran Ranjit off the bowling of Fabid Ahmed,
contributing 14 runs. The responsibility then fell on Yogesh Nagar and Gurinder Singh to resurrect
the innings.
Nagar displayed great determination and played a match-winning innings, scoring an unbeaten
century. He remained not out on 109 runs off 113 deliveries, including 8 boundaries and 2 sixes.
Singh supported him well with a brisk knock of 72 runs off 71 balls before being caught by Paras
Dogra off the bowling of Prabhakaran Gopalakrishnan.
Despite their efforts, Meghalaya could not reach the target set by Puducherry and finished their
innings at 250/5 in 50 overs, falling short by 74 runs.
Bowling Performances:
Pankaj Singh and Fabid Ahmed were the pick of the bowlers for Puducherry. Singh claimed one
wicket, conceding 41 runs in his 9 overs, while Ahmed also took one wicket, giving away 43 runs in 6
overs. Gopalakrishnan and Vikneshwaran also made valuable contributions, taking a wicket each.
For Meghalaya, Dippu Sangma was the most successful bowler, securing a wicket for 21 runs in his 5
overs. Mark Ingty proved to be expensive, but managed to claim two wickets for 75 runs in his 10
overs.
