The work entails assisting the construction contractor, Prime Electrical, to manage and
implement the tendered work for the supply, delivery to site, installation and commissioning
of 5 X 533kV Transmission Line sections on the existing Apollo / Songo HVDC line across
the Limpopo-, Nuanetse- and Save Rivers respectively. The work will have to be done
during the Christmas (2014) holiday season. Eskom has subcontracted the repair work and
new lines to subcontractors, due to the short time constraints and large quantity of work
required.
2014:- Zenith Installations:- Eskom 33kV and below structures.
The work entailed the development and design of a new series of hybrid wood and steel
intermediate and strain structures.
2014:- Aecom/VDM Surveys:- Juno Aries 132kV Lines.
This is a Presidential Priority project, which involved the design of several short lines from
Eskom MTS substations to Transnet TFS substations, in order to increase the electrical
capacity of the Saldanah rail system. A new series of structures was designed using PLS
Pole (TNET type A, C, D, and E). The conductors are twin Tern. The shield wire is
Chickadee and the OPGW is 48 core 16kA. Customized terminal structures and bifurcation
structures had to be designed to cater for phase transformation from 3-phase dual circuit to
6 x 1-phase at the traction substations.
2014:- Eskom Holdings Pty Ltd ECOU:- Dreunberg Sable 132kV line upgrade.
The work entailed the upgrade of an existing 132kV line from Wolf conductor to Tern
conductor, for the section of line, between Dreunberg substation and the new Sable
substation. The existing structures were inspected and data was captured in the field, using
the ikeGPS laser device. The data was imported into PLS Cadd. Problems / defects /
tensioning issues, were identified. A new Tee off structure was designed, as well as a
custom suspension / strain bracket, to achieve the necessary ground and phase clearance.
Earthing of existing structures and installation of a new OPGW conductor was designed to
