Social Media: KM Introduction – NOT A FAD – a fundamental shift in the way we communicate StatsU know about these sites but, do you know how to use them to help your career search?Creative but Cautious:Don’t post anything you would not want your mother or your boss to seeBe unique – show your creative sideDo’s Professional brand (photo, documentation, interests, etc) Diversify – utilize each social media site for the purpose intended Demonstrate Integrity - You want to carry yourself as a true professional Join Groups (be selective – Beer vs Water) Maintain your profile and update with new certs or skills oftenDo Not:Put too much personal information on site – keep it professional Let Social Networking be your only activity OMG! U have 2 B professional when u rite notes 2 a company contact Bad mouth prior employers on your site/blog Forget others can see your “Friends” too

I have worked with many clients over the years. This is one of my clients after I told him he would be going to a networking event. The top 5 fears include:Go through LIST A NOTE ABOUT HELP:Help in this context isn’t about selling your services. It is about finding ways that you can assist the people that you meet. Can you send them an article with useful information? Can you connect them with someone who can lend them a hand? Can you offer them a valuable recommendation? Skill or Will – what is your challenge?Skills – Easy part (books, articles, coaches, etc to help)Will – Your drive for success must trump any fear you haveNecessary (Exercise – must do for good long-term health)LIVE to Network or Network to Live? (most of us here)Networking does not have to be complicated – Let me show you something to illustrate my POINT – CLIP NEXT
Simple Planning makes connecting Easier and more ComfortablePrepare “So, What Do You Do?” - We’ve all heard it but HOW DO WE ANSWER IT?Consider a 1-Line Tagline “I teach people how to Network Smart” is mine, what’s yours?Introductions are known as PITCHES but, I prefer to them as a friendly game of CATCH.It’s NOT - throwing ball hard to knock someone over – U can’t build a relationship with someone who doesn’t want 2 B around you…………………….But U R tossing conversation gently so it can be caught and thrown back to you. Keep the ball in play as you converse with your new contact back and forth. Goal is not to sell but to generate interest in who U R to hint @ value you can bring. (Connections happen through conversation)U never know where it can lead – why not strive to be engaging and see where it goes. It is still possible to make a great connection depending on your personality and the other person’s patience but why handicap yourself when you don’t have to?Important to prepare ahead of time – need a strong answers - Talking about yourself should be the easiest topic – wrong. Few people answer effectively. Some hate this Q because they do not want to be identified by their work while others can’t wait to be asked this Q so they can launch a 10 minute commercial about their latest product breakthrough complete with handouts. SOME FREEZE – I never know what to say.
