Cast Two Shadows The American Revolution of the South
Section 1 Prologue – Chapter 2
Quote
1. “And it came to me then. They could do whatever they wanted. This is why they were here, wasn’t it? To show
us they could do whatever they wanted.” p. 5
2. “What was it about these British that they put peoples bodies on pikes or let them hand unburied? Wasn’t killing
enough?” p. 21

Journal Entry Dear Journal-Today I let out the big secret: my grandmother is Miz Melindy. I had to let that terrible
colonel rawden know so I could help get Daddy out of Jail. So what if they know? If they could hang my friend for days
instead of a decent burial, then what type of morals do they have and can judge me?
Personal Response It is easy to forget that things were so brutal back then-kids at 14 were hanged! That was a
shocker about Caroline being related to Miz Melindy. When I think of slaves I mostly think of the Civil War, not the
Revolutionary War.
Section 2 Chapter 3 – Chapter 4
Quote
1. “The Negra race has good qualities. So do the Indians. White folks arent’ willing to admit it yet.” P. 37
2. “Sorry the laziest word that ever be…come along after all the bad done and try to wash it away. Sorry a lazy
word. Come alone too late.” P. 39

Journal Entry Dear Journal-Family is a funny thing. We are all connected, yet separate. Some of us look alike, and
some of us don’t look anything alike. Is the whole world connected like this?
Personal Response I like the idea of people of mixed race casting “2 shadows” and being special. Even though Miz
Melindy was uneducated with books, she seems to know important life skills about how to cure illnesses and natural
remedies and all of that seems to be lost in all the academics taught in school these days.
Section 3 Chapter 5 – Chapter 6
Quote
1. “Nobody had a right to take what you hold dear.” P. 64
2. “All it takes to outwit your adversary is knowledge.” P. 70

Journal Entry Dear Journal-Today I cooked dinner and played piano for Colonel Rowden. If I have to do these things to
save my father, I will. And my mom will do the labor to save my brother Johnny.
Personal Response The Revolutionary War had many people divided and which side to take-even in families and
regions and states they were divided. This was an ugly civil war. Textbooks sometimes make it seem like all the
Americans fought side by side versus the British. It is also interesting that the some Native Americans were loyal to the
“new” Americans. This section also hits on Women’s rights when she says why men keep women (and people of color)
from having an education.
Section 4 Chapter 7 – Chapter 8

Journal Entry Dear Journal-We saw the devastation as we started our journey from Johnny. Homes had been burned
and women and children are hungry. Nobody knows who to trust.
Personal Response War leaves so many victims. Families with children, the landscapes, the animals and livestock. In
civil wars family members can be pinned against family members and nobody knows who they can trust.
Section 5 Chapter 9 – Chapter 10
Quote
1. “The world was the same. It hadn’t tilted, the sun still came up, the birds still sang.” P. 128
2. “If you’re telling me the truth, you’re a fool for principle. The trick is to know when to stand by it and when to
leave it be. Stand by it foolishly and you’ll have lean times, and no friends. Abandon it foolishly and you’ll have great
plenty and friends, but you’ll hate yourself for life.” P. 131

Journal Entry Dear Journal-After all these years I finally know why my grandmother hated my dad-he sold my mom off
the plantation! Could he have allowed her to stay? And for me to be a servant to his family? And Miz Melindy finally told
me of her Angola heritage and how her family was tore apart and then she formed a new tribe on the plantation.
Personal Response Trust in wartime must be so difficult. In the journey to get Johnny, Caroline runs across family
after family pulled apart because of slavery and because of this war of loyalties.
Section 6 Chapter 11 – Chapter 12
Quote
1. “The Rebels say they fight for freedom. I’ve been free all my life, here in Carolina, free as a bird. I had a good life,
and like so many others I didn’t want it changed.” P. 150
2. “Sometimes bad things happen in families. Dolorous, god-awful, stupid things that hurt everybody. And it takes
time for people to get shut of their feelings about them.” P. 161
Song “Redemption Song” Bob Marley

Journal Entry Dear Journal-We found Johnny! He is a mess, but still his principled self. After some talking to and some
remedies he knows he must come home to help. We encountered the British on the way back home and they are
arrogant and ignorant.
Personal Response The ties of the Americans and the slaves run deep. But the whites cannot imagine how the
African-Americans yearn for the same freedoms. The ties of the Americans and the British also run deep and the British
cannot see that Americans want to be free also.
Section 7 Chapter 13 – Chapter 14
Quote
1. “’Never been offa this place since I come here, an’ I never wanna go offa it again’”. P. 186

Journal Entry Dear Journal- We are finally home. I did it! But in the progress we just found out that Just Agnus died on
the way back. I overheard Cephas offered to take the whipping for Johnny.
Personal Response Sometimes it seems that the slaves are as much as a part of the family as the blood-relatives of
the family. I wonder if this ties into Miz Melindy’s idea of tribe?
Section 8 Chapter 15 – Chapter 16
Quote
1. “War tries to wash away the rules…but after that, the rules hold.” P. 191
2. “the river gives us all life. Flows by an’ we all part of it. But the river doan kow what it be either. Up north is be
Catawba. Here it be Wateree. Below us, where it runs itself into the ocean it be the Santee. It be the river.” P. 191

Journal Entry Dear Journal-I feel like I killed Just Agnus cuz I put the cover over her to keep her quiet. Miz Melindy says
this guilt I got-about Agnus, about Kit, and about my real mom will end up my strength.
Personal Response Johnny is using the dead body of Just Agnus just like the British used Kit. This is interesting that
when the bad moral road is of benefit to your “side” then it doesn’t seem as bad a thing to do.
Section 9 Chapter 17 – Chapter 18
Quote
1. “there are some things in life we cannot fix…biggest lesson we have to learn is to walk away from them.” P. 215

Journal Entry Dear Journal-Rowden has learned Johnny is not a loyalist and he insists on getting our most prized
horse. The British have ravaged our farm, killing our milk-cows and egg-laying hens. They have no idea how farms are
farmed and they are hurting themselves.
Personal Response
Section 10 Chapter 19 – Epilogue
Quote
1. “We have each other.” P. 242
2. “War takes a terrible toll on people, on families. And if war doesn’t, then just ordinary life does.” P. 264

Journal Entry Dear Journal-when it comes down to deciding between possessions and family, I have to pick family-and
EVERYONE on the farm is my family. I trusted my mind and Johnny told me to and the plan for escape worked. I had to
burn my home, but I know it was nothing compared to trying to keep my family together.
Personal Response There is a parallel of the family the white Americans have with the slaves and the Americans
have with the British. Just like the mixed raced people cast two shadows, so does do Americans who are both American
and British.
