South West TAFE was funded
in 2013 for 4 e learning
projects. Key themes were
change – in models and
approaches for delivery and
also had change for teachers
in e learning part of the mix.
Technology also was key in
all the projects.

South West Institute of TAFE
is the largest provider of
vocational education and
training services in South
West Victoria, with 75%
of the VET market in the
Great South Coast region.
The Institute services a
population in excess of
125,000 people covering
23,365 square kilometres
and 5 government
municipalities. In a nutshell
that’s over 10% of Victoria.
3. South West TAFE e-learning projects Slide # 3
The e learning projects
were to inform and have
new ideas using e learning
to deliver and maintain
diverse range of program
areas into broadly dispersed
populations. Meeting the
individual learning needs
of our student cohort was
important. E learning offers
our students choices in how
and when they learn more
than ever before.
4. South West TAFE e-learning projects Slide # 4
Here are our 2013 e learning
leaders for our projects. One
project had a team of two.
Feedback from these staff
said the dual role for support
and ideas was very good
for them to progress their
project. The other 3 were
single convenors with big
shoes to put on and hit the e
learning road.
5. South West TAFE e-learning projects Slide # 5
Project 1
This project was to convert a
fully face to face traditional
carpentry model to a
blended model of delivery
using Moodle as the support
platform. The project aimed
to provide greater flexibility
to learners and employers in
Industry so students could
start any time and have
less travel and face to face
requirements beyond this
year. For the project the
Certificate III in
Carpentry was the course
concentrated on.
6. South West TAFE e-learning projects Slide # 6
The Process
The aim visually was to
show that students have
more than one way to
get their study done. Not
all eggs are the same
despite their appearance.
The blended approach
allowed continuous feed
of new students, access to
resources and assessments
up front and a clear pathway
for students to follow to
gain their qualification.
Conversion of resources into
Moodle as well as links on
Moodle to key documents
such as conversion tables
and reference books was
also undertaken.
7. South West TAFE e-learning projects Slide # 7
This project was a massive new
approach to delivery of Carpentry.
A significant key to the project was
change management of staff views
and fears over the effectiveness of
e learning for carpentry or hands on
students.
The project approach also had
to address very minimal skills in
using technology by the teachers
themselves. The quote from the
project convenor was in his project
reflection. He believed some of the
most anti e learning were also being
converted slowly to this approach.
Staff were also part of the conversion,
not just books and study guides. As
this change became apparent, other
staff were now becoming more
involved with the importance of the
project. He saw the staff training and
attitudinal behaviours towards the
outcomes as key to the success of the
pilot beyond this year. The course is
being planned in 2014 to be delivered
this way by teachers.
The project has had some staffing
issues due to unexpected things
occurring. Despite the pressures
this produced, the outcomes of the
project were being realised, even
though the timelines were always
under time pressures.

Project 2
This project was to develop
an on line health resource
inside Moodle. The
activity focused around
the consolidation and
development of resources
for Nursing as a focus
with the resources being
applicable to Massage and
Allied Health topics. Before
the project could get busy
creating there was a need
for the convenor to get
Moodle training and some
professional development to
be able to get the resources
created.
9. South West TAFE e-learning projects Slide # 9
Professional development
and training gaps in e design
were apparent as the project
progressed. Teachers in
Health needed new skills in
being equipped to navigate
and present the on line
resources. In many ways, the
teachers are back in teaching
practice re training mode.
Several activities were
undertaken. The convenor
attended a Teaching and
Learning conference. Health
Centre staff were also
exposed to Moodle training
and attended 21st Century
teaching skills workshop.
10. South West TAFE e-learning projects Slide # 10
This is the quote of the
convenor as her project
was finishing. She saw the
potential limitless for a
blended delivery model
using Moodle.

Project 3
The focus was to pilot
software and hardware to
assist in remote collection
of student information
and assessments. The pilot
was working with Meat
Training Australia and Bakery
apprentices around the
state.
12. South West TAFE e-learning projects Slide # 12
The project was a success
once the hardware and
software issues were
explored and piloted. This
project used iphones and
ipads and then using the
app store to purchase PDF
reader. This combination
shows promise of enormous
in roads to applying it now to
all trainees and apprentices
off site and has created
streamlined delivery for the
teachers involved in
the pilot.
13. South West TAFE e-learning projects Slide # 13
This is a visual of the desk of
the Meat Training Australia
teacher in pre pilot and post
pilot mode.
He is delighted with the
lighter physical load of
carrying workbooks and
assessment tasks out to
the student but also the
ease in which the remote
collection via ipad is being
integrated into the student
management system once
he has returned to the office.
Potentially we have created
the paperless traineeship/
apprentice model of delivery.
The employers and students
are giving great feedback
to our teachers with this
model. Success looks tidy
as well.

Project 4
An e learning community
of practice was created
and convened by a Teacher
in General Education, Lu
Butler. This slide represents
the philosophical model of
how Lu saw the community
operated.
15. South West TAFE e-learning projects Slide # 15
Without a community to
engage, reflect and share,
teachers often work in
isolation with their ideas.
The e learning community
was created to give teachers
a collective to share and
investigate teaching using
on line delivery and learning
management systems.
16. South West TAFE e-learning projects Slide # 16
The community was able
to explore and share many
different ideas and models
in the project period. The
community went from
the face to face meeting
structure very quickly to
using video conferences,
Blackboard collaborate,
Moodle and other platforms
to build and consolidate
teacher ideas and skills.
The community decided
early on to get further
training in Moodle. Over
24 staff attended the one
day session provided by
Michael Gwyther. The
feedback was great and
many teachers that attended
got new skills to go back to
create engaging quizzes and
content using Moodle.
17. South West TAFE e-learning projects Slide # 17
A significant part of all the
projects was to support
teaching staff with e learning
professional development
opportunities. 21st Century
learning was a one half day
hands on skills workshop in
the world of being a 21st
Century teacher. Over 50
staff attended the 2 sessions.
This was a highly engaging,
energising and powerful
PD experience for our
teaching staff.
18. South West TAFE e-learning projects Slide # 18
We had a great facilitator
Michelle Lomman come to
present the 21st Century
Teaching skills day on site
at SW TAFE. By the end of
each session teaching staff
had created, discovered,
explored and mastered some
great new apps, websites,
functions and approaches.
Our staff were delighted and
impressed with the day. Staff
development is a key pillar
of any progress in e learning.
We were very fortunate
to have the mix of highly
motivational presenter
and content. A fantastic
professional development
day for teachers.
19. South West TAFE e-learning projects Slide # 19
All our e learning leaders had
reflections of thoughts and
quotes. This quote was in
the final piece by our Bakery
teacher Jason Bidmade who
was involved in the Cloud
based pilot for remote
students. It really does sum
up where we are at now
as an organisation. We
need to embrace this new
and fast moving world for
students. Our reality is we
are incredibly enthusiastic
in creating great e learning
experiences for our staff and
our students.
20. South West TAFE e-learning projects Slide # 20
The previous slides are a
snap shot of our 4 e learning
projects. The possibilities
and potential are indeed
unlimited. We at SW
TAFE are grateful for the
opportunity and experiences
the projects have allowed
and now have a whole
lot of new learning and
information we can now
consolidate and apply in
the future.
