3. What are the popular countries for pursuing
Medical training following graduation?
• US
Pros: High-quality training and research, good salaries.
Cons: Exams are challenging, expensive, highly competitive, some specialties are very hard to get in.
• UK
Pros: mostly high-quality training and research, less challenging basic exams (PLABs), the possibility of
getting British passport
Cons: Average salaries, time consuming, some specialties are very competitive.
• Germany
Good quality training, less competitive but you have to learn German.
• Australia
• Ireland
Easy to get there (Housemanship and OET only!), training jobs are scarce.
• Qatar
Good quality training in the region and good payment, less powerful certificate (Arab board).

how can I work on them?
• Exams (e.g. USMLE steps, PLABs)

5. Exams
•By country
US: USMLE step 1, USMLE step 2 CK, and OET. (Step 3 is not
mandatory for applying but preferred
UK: PLAB 1, PLAB 2 and IELTS or OET.
alternatively MRCP, MRCS,..etc (according to the specialty)
Qatar: iFOM or USMLE step 2CK exam and IELTS.

6. Research
• Vital part of your application regardless of the targeted pathway
My advice:
- Learn the basics of research properly
- Make use of the UMST staff (prof. Nouma)
- Take your graduation thesis seriously and try to publish it (before or after
graduation)
- Work on independent research projects and find a supervisor who can help you
publish your work (it’s a team work!)
- Join research groups (SAMRA, Daoud research group..etc)
- Attend courses (online or offline)
- Work with others on their projects to get co-authorship like masters or PHD
students or even MD doctors. (data collector for example)

7. Teaching:
• Following graduation try to work as a teaching assistant or any other
medical teaching job.
• Keep evidence of any informal teaching activates like workshops or
tutorials you did (helpful for those going to the UK).
• Get a degree in teaching like medical education master or relevant
courses.
Quality improvement project:
• Try to do some clinical audits.
Post-graduate certificate:
• Post-graduate certificate, diploma, Masters or even PhD.

8. Conferences:
• Attend national and international conferences (shows interest in your specialty)
• Present your research (as poster, abstract..etc) in conferences.
• Most of the international ones are now virtual, some of the useful organizations (most of them has free
membership and resources for medical students):

- American academy of Neurology

Fresh graduate have better chances of matching.

15. USMLE

7 subjects, 8 hours : Behavioral sciences/Biostatistics, Anatomy, Physiology,
Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Pathology
• Step 2 CK: CK= Clinical Knowledge,
5 subjects, 9 hours : Int.Medicine, Surgery, ObGyn, Peds, Statistics.

17. Study plan?
• There is no rigid study plan that you have to follow.
• Start as early as possible.
• You have to be consistent and serious (a small percentage of those who start
studying actually end up taking the exam)
• The main resources must be well understood and memorized
• Other resources are mostly used to make the main ones easier to deal with
• Rereading is not an effective method of learning. It’s better to do more MCQs and
Anki than going through first aid a couple of times.

18. Step 2 CK
• The single most important resource:

19. USCE
• United States Clinical Experience: Any work or volunteer
experience within the U.S Health System. Includes:
Observerships, Externships, Research, Internships.
• Observerships: You act as an Observer, cant interact with
patients directly. Weakest form of USCE but easiest to find,
can be very good if you form good bonds with the physicians
at the hospital or clinic, so you get a good LOR (Letter or
recommendation).
• Research: Exactly what it sounds like, work on research
projects with physicians and patients, strengthens your
application and can also provide good LOR’s.

20. USCE
• Internships: Are paid and are actually preliminary years of
residency in actuality, and takes the whole match process to
get one. EXTREMELY STRONG, needed for some of the
competitive specialties.
• Externships: Can be free or paid for, Hands on experience
that is also VERY strong on your application, costs on average
1500-2000 for about a month of USCE, can get the best
LOR’S. Difficult to find and requires planning.
• Core Clerkships: Done during medical school and can only be
done during it, technically counts as an externship, is just as
strong if not better than an Externship.

21. USCE
• The amount of time spent in US healthcare is always a
plus, MORE IS ALWAYS BETTER. Something is better than
nothing.
• Some hospitals require it for their Residency Applicants
and will decline any applicants without it, some place it
but don’t follow it strictly.
• The site of the USCE varies in its strength: Hospitals are
better than clinics and Inpatient are usually better than
Out-patient (depends on specialty you're applying to).

22. USCE
• You have to do your search as due to COVID, a lot has changed.
• It’s easier for medical students, just apply early and plan ahead.
• It can be done during the summer but most of them require step 1.

26. BHO who are we?
• Was founded in 2019 by a group of young Sudanese women and men who mainly
graduated from UMST.
• An idea that sparked amid the Sudanese revolution. In June of 2019, during the
country's state of emergency, this small group decided to help. It started the
"Mobadarat Kahrabtak wa raseedak 3laina" initiative, supplying the community with
free electricity and calling credit. Shortly after, we began the winter clothing campaign
providing winter clothes to the homeless.
• Moved by the revolution's slogan to rebuild, we decided to redirect our efforts to the
most vulnerable sector of the community, children.
• By rehabilitating and rebuilding schools in the outskirts of Sudan, BHO aims to make a
difference by ensuring access to education for all. We strive to be catalysts for change
to improve access to education for all children.
