INTRODUCTION
• A computer network is a telecommunications network that
allows computers to exchange data.
• The physical connection between networked computing
devices is established using either cable media or wireless
media.
• To be able to connect with networks, some computers need a
network interface card, or NIC.The NIC handles the flow of
data to and from the computer in both wired and wireless
networks.

INTRODUCTION
The best-known computer network is the internet.

COMPUTER NETWORK
WHAT IS A COMPUTER NETWORK ?
• A collection of computing devices that are connected in various ways in
order to communicate and share resources.
• To create a computer network, each workstation and device must be
able to communicate with the network.
• Anything connected to network is called (Node).
• This requires establishing the physical connection using physical media.
• Usually, the connections between computers in a network are made
using physical wires or cables.

COMPUTER NETWORK
HOW DO COMPUTERSTALKTO EACH OTHER?
• For computers to talk with one another, they must use the
same protocol. A protocol sets a standard format for data and
rules for handling it.
• The communication on a network is called NetworkTraffic.
• Network traffic is the electronic pulses of information sent by
the network cards to carry data through the network wires to
its destination.
11/22/2018
COMPUTER NETWORK
There are two protocol categories: open and proprietary.
• The most common open protocol is the
TransmissionControl Protocol/Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP), which is used by computers
on the Internet.
• A proprietary protocol is only available to
people who buy certain equipment,
services, or computers.
11/22/2018
Protocol (TCP/IP)

• Increased Speed
• Reduced Cost
• Improved Security
• Centralized Software
managements
• Electronic Mail
• Flexible access
• High cost of installation
• Requires time for
administration
• Failure of server
• Cable faults

TYPES OF NETWORK
11/22/2018
• Client-server architecture.
• Peer-to-peer architecture.
• Hybrid architecture.
11/22/2018
Client-server architecture
• On a network built using the client-server architecture, the
devices communicate to other devices through a central
computer referred to as a server.
• The server is a terminal with high processing power, which
provides services for the other computers on the network.
• The client is a terminal that accesses the resources
available on a server.
11/22/2018
Peer-to-peer architecture
• On a network built using the peer-to-peer
architecture, no specific distinction exists between a
client and a server.
• Any node can provide a service as well as send a
request for a service from another node on the
network.
• The peer-to-peer network architecture allows sharing
of resources, data, and users.
• Each node on the network has full control over the
network resources.
11/22/2018
Hybrid architecture
• A hybrid, in general, is a composition of two
different types of elements.
• A hybrid network architecture is created to get the
benefits of both, the peer-to-peer and the client-
server architectures, in a network.
11/22/2018
NETWORKTOPOLOGY
• A map of a network shows the physical structure of the network, including
servers, work-stations, and other network devices. This layout is called the
network topology.
• The different types of network topologies that can be used to set up a
network are:
• BusTopology.
• StarTopology.
• RingTopology.
• MeshTopology.
• TreeTopology.
• HybridTopology.
11/22/2018
NETWORKTOPOLOGY
Topology solves the issues of contention and collision.
• When two computers try to access the
network at the same time, they're in
contention.
• If both sent their data at once, there could
be a collision, with
the data mixing together.
11/22/2018
NETWORKTOPOLOGY
Bus topology is a rare, older network design, in which devices are connected to a single
network line.
Disadvantages of BusTopology
* Cables fails then whole network fails.
* Cable has a limited length.
* It is slower than the ring topology.
11/22/2018
NETWORKTOPOLOGY
Ring Topology forms a ring as each computer is connected to another computer,
with the last one connected to the first.
Disadvantages of RingTopology:
• Cable fails then whole network
fails.
• It is difficult to install and
reconfigure ring topology.
11/22/2018
NETWORKTOPOLOGY
Star topology design connects each network device to a central hub. A hub is a
connection point for all the computers, printers, and other equipment on the
network.
Disadvantages of RingTopology:
Requires more cable than most topologies
11/22/2018
NETWORKTOPOLOGY
Star bus topology connects multiple star networks along a bus.
11/22/2018
NETWORKTOPOLOGY
Mesh topology is a point-to-point connection and all
the network devices are connected to each other.

  • 24. NETWORKTOPOLOGY Topology solves the issues of contention and collision. • When two computers try to access the network at the same time, they're in contention. • If both sent their data at once, there could be a collision, with the data mixing together. 11/22/2018
  • 25. NETWORKTOPOLOGY Bus topology is a rare, older network design, in which devices are connected to a single network line. Disadvantages of BusTopology * Cables fails then whole network fails. * Cable has a limited length. * It is slower than the ring topology. 11/22/2018
  • 26. NETWORKTOPOLOGY Ring Topology forms a ring as each computer is connected to another computer, with the last one connected to the first. Disadvantages of RingTopology: • Cable fails then whole network fails. • It is difficult to install and reconfigure ring topology. 11/22/2018
  • 27. NETWORKTOPOLOGY Star topology design connects each network device to a central hub. A hub is a connection point for all the computers, printers, and other equipment on the network. Disadvantages of RingTopology: Requires more cable than most topologies 11/22/2018
  • 28. NETWORKTOPOLOGY Star bus topology connects multiple star networks along a bus. 11/22/2018
  • 29. NETWORKTOPOLOGY Mesh topology is a point-to-point connection and all the network devices are connected to each other. 11/22/2018
