by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner
Published their manifesto in
1906, using wood carving as a

They liked woodcuts for the
plain, crude forms in it.

Berlin, where they were
confronted with the modern
urbanity of the city.
They wanted to challenge the
traditional style of arts, which
was impressionism now.

came from within the artist, came
from what they were
feeling, rather than observing
objects.

modern art, which they felt had
gone astray.
