On National Teacher Day, meet the 2024-25 Kenan Fellows
Expressionism Project
1.
2. Formed in Dresden, Germany
by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner
Published their manifesto in
1906, using wood carving as a
template
They liked woodcuts for the
plain, crude forms in it.
3. In 1910 the group moved to
Berlin, where they were
confronted with the modern
urbanity of the city.
They wanted to challenge the
traditional style of arts, which
was impressionism now.
4. As opposed to Impressionism, art
came from within the artist, came
from what they were
feeling, rather than observing
objects.
Putting the spirit back into
modern art, which they felt had
gone astray.
5. Founder of Die Brücke
He was influenced by
Vincent Van Gogh and
Edvard Munch
Known for his Berlin
Street Scenes
6. “With faith in progress and in a new
generation of creators and spectators
we call together all youth. As
youth, we carry the future and want to
create for ourselves freedom of life
and of movement against the long-
established older forces. Everyone
who reproduces that which drives him
to creation with directness and
authenticity belongs to us.”
-Ernst Kirchner
15. Wassily
Kandinsky, Franz Mark
and Paul Klee
The connection between
visual art and music
Symbolic use of color
16. Fascinated by colors and nature
Transitioned from basic simple landscapes to
completely abstract and complex works of
art.
His approach involved dramatic use of
color, lines and shapes
20. Was very interested in nature
The subject of most of his paintings revolved
around animals and nature
Used extensive amounts of bright colors and
contrasts to give off the message of his art.
25. Developed different composition styles
Thought that he had a responsibility to “Heal
the gaping wound that separate man from his
environment.”
Drastic use of “color theory”
32. Started movement
Was influenced by Naturalism
and Impressionism
1893- 1907
33. Painted after WWI
Painted “Apocalypse
Landscapes”
His works were considered
purely expressionist
34.
35. Self portraits were used to make the
inner feelings of the artist show
Expressionists did a lot of self
portraits even some of their works are
considered self portraits.
Show the emotions of average people
36. One of the first expressionists
Member of Die Brücke
movement
Used oil painting and
watercolor mainly
37.
38. Gives painting texture
More realistic
Very versatile and can make it to almost
any color,
viscosity as well as sheen
More of a romanticist thing but
expressionists used it too
39. Used for a pure color with little
to no variation
Brings
out a bright and
luminous feel to the painting
Hinweis der Redaktion
"Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul."
