Case Study presentation given at "Evolving Identities: Collaboration to Enhance Student Success" National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning in Higher Education, Dundalk IT, 23 May 2019. What is the barrier to researching in Special Collections? Is the process akin to going on a bear hunt? Can you go through it? If you learn how to do this then the achievements and opportunities for student success can be immense. Student success can be gauged in terms of internal departmental or university awards, or external awards and funding. Equally student success can be gauged by public engagement outputs, the reach and impact of such outputs and the skills learned. This presentation examines a number of different interactions with Special Collections borne out of conversations 2013-2019.

Sixteen years ago, American Libraries published Mark Y. Herring’s essay “Ten Reasons Why the Internet Is No Substitute for a Library” (April 2001). Technology has improved exponentially since then—social media didn’t even exist yet. But even the smartest phone’s intelligence is limited by paywalls, Twitter trolls, fake news, and other hazards of online life. Here are 10 reasons why libraries are still better than the internet. 1. Libraries are safer spaces. 2. Libraries respect history. 3. Librarians digitize influential primary sources. 4. Librarians are leaders in increasing online access to scholarly information. 5. Librarians are publishers. 6. Libraries host makerspaces. 7. With the rise of the internet, the recent popularity of e-books and the prevalence of smartphones in today's society, are the days of the public library numbered? Absolutely not, according to Ryan Livergood, Director of Libraries for the Town of Arlington and Treasurer of the Massachusetts Library Association. Libraries are busier than ever, and Ryan believes the public library has never been more vital to the community it serves. Ryan will tell the story of how today's 21st century library is different from the library of the 20th century, and the stories of individuals that are using today's libraries to improve their lives. He will also discuss how the story of today's library parallels the story of the rapidly changing world we live in today...how not just libraries, but all organizations, will have to adapt to meet the changing habits and needs of the individuals we serve.

The Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG), also known as the Taxonomic Databases Working Group, is a non-profit scientific and educational association that is affiliated with the International Union of Biological Sciences. TDWG was formed to establish international collaboration among biological database projects and related services. Promoting the wider and more effective dissemination of information about the World's heritage of biological organisms for the benefit of the world at large, TDWG focuses on the development of standards for the exchange of biological/biodiversity data. TDWG promotes the use of standards through the most appropriate and effective means and acts as a forum for discussion through holding meetings and through publications, especially the recently launched open access journal, Biodiversity Information Standards and Science. This presentation will focus on areas of possible collaboration by the larger networked information community around bioinformatic standards, areas where TDWG collaborates with other biodiversity organizations such as the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL), and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).
