While they are still as good and relevant for the same use cases as they were 20 years ago, they cannot solve new, existing challenges and those sure to come in a ever-changing digital world. I discuss a good big data architecture which includes Data Warehouse / Business Intelligence + Apache Hadoop + Real Time / Stream Processing. Several real world example are shown. TIBCO offers some very nice products for realizing these use cases, e.g. Spotfire (Business Intelligence / BI), StreamBase (Stream Processing), BusinessEvents (Complex Event Processing / CEP) and BusinessWorks (Integration / ESB). How can you prevent this from happening? Enter the modern data warehouse, which is able to handle and excel with these new trends. It handles all types of data (Hadoop), provides a way to easily interface with all these types of data (PolyBase), and can handle “big data” and provide fast queries. Is there one appliance that can support this modern data warehouse? Yes! It is the Analytics Platform System (APS) from Microsoft (formally called Parallel Data Warehouse or PDW) , which is a Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) appliance that has been recently updated (v2 AU1). In this session I will dig into the details of the modern data warehouse and APS. I will give an overview of the APS hardware and software architecture, identify what makes APS different, and demonstrate the increased performance. In addition I will discuss how Hadoop, HDInsight, and PolyBase fit into this new modern data warehouse.

Go-powered Open Source Project Flogo for Lightweight IoT and Edge Integration: The Internet of Things (IoT) brings up 50 billion devices until 2020, which have to be connected somehow. Challenges include low bandwidth, high latency, non-reliable connectivity and the need for low network costs. Therefore, a gateway at the edge is needed remotely on site of the devices to filter, aggregate and send just relevant data into the cloud or data center. This session introduces open source project Flogo, which allows developing ultra-lightweight IoT edge applications with a zero-coding web user interface. Coders can also rely just on Go code if they want. It is written in Go programming language and therefore 20-50x more lightweight than similar Java or JavaScript frameworks. The session focuses on live demos and shows how to develop ultra-lightweight microservices and how to integrate IoT devices using standards such as MQTT, WebSockets, CoaP or REST. The last part of the session compares Project Flogo to other open source IoT projects like Eclipse Kura or Node-RED and cloud offerings such as AWS IoT. A key task to create appropriate analytic models in machine learning or deep learning is the integration and preparation of data sets from various sources like files, databases, big data storages, sensors or social networks. This step can take up to 80% of the whole project. This session compares different alternative techniques to prepare data, including extract-transform-load (ETL) batch processing (like Talend, Pentaho), streaming analytics ingestion (like Apache Storm, Flink, Apex, TIBCO StreamBase, IBM Streams, Software AG Apama), and data wrangling (DataWrangler, Trifacta) within visual analytics. "Big Data" is currently a big hype. Large amounts of historical data are stored in Hadoop or other platforms. Business Intelligence tools and statistical computing are used to draw new knowledge and to find patterns from this data, for example for promotions, cross-selling or fraud detection. The key challenge is how these findings can be integrated from historical data into new transactions in real time to make customers happy, increase revenue or prevent fraud. "Fast Data" via stream processing is the solution to embed patterns - which were obtained from analyzing historical data - into future transactions in real-time. This session uses several real world success stories to explain the concepts behind stream processing and its relation to Hadoop and other big data platforms. The session discusses how patterns and statistical models of R, Spark MLlib and other technologies can be integrated into real-time processing using open source frameworks (such as Apache Storm, Spark or Flink) or products (such as IBM InfoSphere Streams or TIBCO StreamBase). If there were a buzzword of the hour, it would certainly be "data mesh"! This new architectural paradigm unlocks analytic data at scale and enables rapid access to an ever-growing number of distributed domain datasets for various usage scenarios. As such, the data mesh addresses the most common weaknesses of the traditional centralized data lake or data platform architecture. And the heart of a data mesh infrastructure must be real-time, decoupled, reliable, and scalable. This presentation explores how Apache Kafka, as an open and scalable decentralized real-time platform, can be the basis of a data mesh infrastructure and - complemented by many other data platforms like a data warehouse, data lake, and lakehouse - solve real business problems. There is no silver bullet or single technology/product/cloud service for implementing a data mesh. The key outcome of a data mesh architecture is the ability to build data products; with the right tool for the job. A good data mesh combines data streaming technology like Apache Kafka or Confluent Cloud with cloud-native data warehouse and data lake architectures from Snowflake, Databricks, Google BigQuery, et al.

I see the following topics coming up more regularly in conversations with customers, prospects, and the broader Kafka community across the globe: Kappa Architecture: Kappa goes mainstream to replace Lambda and Batch pipelines (that does not mean that there is no batch processing anymore). Examples: Kafka-powered Kappa architectures from Uber, Disney, Shopify, and Twitter. Hyper-personalized Omnichannel: Retail and customer communication across online and offline channels becomes the new black, including context-specific upselling, recommendations, and location-based services. Examples: Omnichannel Retail and Customer 360 in Real-Time with Apache Kafka. Multi-Cloud Deployments: Business units and IT infrastructures span across regions, continents, and cloud providers. Linking clusters for bi-directional replication of data in real-time becomes crucial for many business models. Examples: Global Kafka deployments. Edge Analytics: Low latency requirements, cost efficiency, or security requirements enforce the deployment of (some) event streaming use cases at the far edge (i.e., outside a data center), for instance, for predictive maintenance and quality assurance on the shop floor level in smart factories. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
