WHAT IS SOLAR POWER?
• Energy from sun in the form of solar radiation is used to produce
electricity.
• It is of two types:-
1.Direct conversion using photovoltaic cells
• Here solar energy is directly converted to electrical energy by means of
solar photovoltaic cells made of silicon wafer.
• It works on the principle of photovoltaic effect.
• Photovoltaic effect is the process of generation of an emf as a result of the
absorption of photons from light radiation.
• The emf generated in solar cell is low voltage DC. It is converted to AC by
using power conditioner.
System configuration
2.Indirect conversion using boiler method.
• Large parabolic collectors are used to collect solar energy, which is
used to heat a fluid.
• This heat is exchanged to water to produce steam.
• The steam produced is used to run a prime mover coupled to an
electric generator, which generates electricity.
Advantages
• It is free of cost, pollution free, used in remote areas.
Disadvantages
• Sunlight is not available during night, expensive, large area required for
installation.

• These plants use solar thermal energy to make steam, thereafter
converted into electricity by a turbine.

HYBRID SYSTEMS
• ISCC system:-The Hassi R’Mel power station in Algeria, is an example of
combining solar thermal plants with a gas turbine, where a 25 MW
parabolic trough array supplements a much larger 130 MW Combines cycle
gas turbine plant.
• PV/T system:-Hybrid PV/T, also known as photovoltaic thermal hybrid
solar collectors convert solar radiation into thermal and electrical energy.
• CPVT system:-A concentrated photovoltaic thermal hybrid(CPVT) system
is similar to a PVT system. It combines a solar thermal collectors with
concentrated photovoltaics.
• PV diesel system:-It combines a photovoltaic system with a diesel generator.
Combinations with other renewables is also possible like wind energy.
EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES
1.Concentrator photovoltaics
Concentrator photovoltaics systems employ sunlight
concentrated onto photovoltaic surfaces for efficient
Power production. It uses lenses and curved mirrors
to focus sunlight.
• Used in spacecrafts.
2.Floatovoltaics
Photovoltaic systems that float on the surface of
irrigation canals, water reservoirs, quarry lakes and
tailing ponds. These systems reduce the need of
valuable land area, save drinking water that would
otherwise be lost through evaporation. Panels are
kept at a cooler temperature than they would be on
land.
How much does a solar panel cost in India?
Please note that this is the cost for the panel and in case you are looking for
inverter and batteries, the cost would be additional. A good 5 kW system for
a home would cost around Rs 3-4 lakhs to setup (at retail price of around Rs
40 per Wp), which can provide electricity for 25 years.
RECENT SOLAR POWER PROJECTS
1.Kamuthi solar power plant
Adani dedicated the Kamuthi Solar Plant to
the nation. The world’s largest solar power
plant, when operational in full capacity, will
be a glowing example of India’s renewable
energy initiative, contributing to the
Government of India’s 2020 vision of a
cleaner, greener country with sustainable
power generation and distribution.
• 648 MW of solar power generation
• Electricity for 3.92 lakh homes
• Spread over 2500 acres in Kamuthi, TN
2.Charanka Solar Park, Gujarat
590 MW capacity of "Solar Park" is located
at village Charanka, District Patan in
Gujarat spread across 5,384 acres of unused
land. The integrated "Solar Park" has state
of art infrastructure with provision to
harness rain water besides power evacuation
at the door steps. Installed capacity of
224MW Solar Project have been
commissioned by 20 developers.
3.Cochin International Airport Solar Power Plant
12 MWp solar power plant, comprising of
46,150 solar panels laid across 45 acres near
cargo complex. Now, Cochin airport's solar
power plant is producing 50,000 to 60,000
units of electricity per day to be consumed
for all its operational functions,
which technically make the airport
‘absolutely power neutral ‘. This plant will
produce 18 million units of power from ' sun '
annually-the power equivalent to feed 10,000
homes for one year.

WHAT IS SOLAR POWER? • Energy from sun in the form of solar radiation is used to produce electricity. • It is of two types:- 1.Direct conversion using photovoltaic cells • Here solar energy is directly converted to electrical energy by means of solar photovoltaic cells made of silicon wafer. • It works on the principle of photovoltaic effect. • Photovoltaic effect is the process of generation of an emf as a result of the absorption of photons from light radiation. • The emf generated in solar cell is low voltage DC. It is converted to AC by using power conditioner.
  • 4. 2.Indirect conversion using boiler method. • Large parabolic collectors are used to collect solar energy, which is used to heat a fluid. • This heat is exchanged to water to produce steam. • The steam produced is used to run a prime mover coupled to an electric generator, which generates electricity.
  • 5. Advantages • It is free of cost, pollution free, used in remote areas. Disadvantages • Sunlight is not available during night, expensive, large area required for installation.

HYBRID SYSTEMS • ISCC system:-The Hassi R’Mel power station in Algeria, is an example of combining solar thermal plants with a gas turbine, where a 25 MW parabolic trough array supplements a much larger 130 MW Combines cycle gas turbine plant. • PV/T system:-Hybrid PV/T, also known as photovoltaic thermal hybrid solar collectors convert solar radiation into thermal and electrical energy. • CPVT system:-A concentrated photovoltaic thermal hybrid(CPVT) system is similar to a PVT system. It combines a solar thermal collectors with concentrated photovoltaics. • PV diesel system:-It combines a photovoltaic system with a diesel generator. Combinations with other renewables is also possible like wind energy.
  • 9. EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES 1.Concentrator photovoltaics Concentrator photovoltaics systems employ sunlight concentrated onto photovoltaic surfaces for efficient Power production. It uses lenses and curved mirrors to focus sunlight. • Used in spacecrafts. 2.Floatovoltaics Photovoltaic systems that float on the surface of irrigation canals, water reservoirs, quarry lakes and tailing ponds. These systems reduce the need of valuable land area, save drinking water that would otherwise be lost through evaporation. Panels are kept at a cooler temperature than they would be on land.
  • 10. How much does a solar panel cost in India? Please note that this is the cost for the panel and in case you are looking for inverter and batteries, the cost would be additional. A good 5 kW system for a home would cost around Rs 3-4 lakhs to setup (at retail price of around Rs 40 per Wp), which can provide electricity for 25 years.
  • 11. RECENT SOLAR POWER PROJECTS 1.Kamuthi solar power plant Adani dedicated the Kamuthi Solar Plant to the nation. The world’s largest solar power plant, when operational in full capacity, will be a glowing example of India’s renewable energy initiative, contributing to the Government of India’s 2020 vision of a cleaner, greener country with sustainable power generation and distribution. • 648 MW of solar power generation • Electricity for 3.92 lakh homes • Spread over 2500 acres in Kamuthi, TN
  • 12. 2.Charanka Solar Park, Gujarat 590 MW capacity of "Solar Park" is located at village Charanka, District Patan in Gujarat spread across 5,384 acres of unused land. The integrated "Solar Park" has state of art infrastructure with provision to harness rain water besides power evacuation at the door steps. Installed capacity of 224MW Solar Project have been commissioned by 20 developers.
  • 13. 3.Cochin International Airport Solar Power Plant 12 MWp solar power plant, comprising of 46,150 solar panels laid across 45 acres near cargo complex. Now, Cochin airport's solar power plant is producing 50,000 to 60,000 units of electricity per day to be consumed for all its operational functions, which technically make the airport ‘absolutely power neutral ‘. This plant will produce 18 million units of power from ' sun ' annually-the power equivalent to feed 10,000 homes for one year.
