1. PLASTIC ROAD
-K.J.ANAND
• Plastic roads mainly use plastic carry bags, disposable cups and bottles
that are collected from garbage dumps as an important ingredient of the
construction material. When mixed with hot bitumen, plastics melt to
form an oily coat over the aggregate and the mixture is laid on the road
surface like a normal tar road.
Disposal of waste plastic is a major problem.
It is non biodegradable & It mainly consists of
low-density polyethylene .
Burning of these waste plastic bags causes
environmental pollution.
To find its utility in bituminous mixes for road
construction , Laboratory performance studies
were conducted on bituminous mixes .
Laboratory studies proved that waste plastic
enhances the property of the mix .
Improvement in properties of bituminous mix
provides the solution for disposal in an useful
way.
2. STAGE-PLANNING
-K.J.ANAND
3 Stages in planning
• A. Initial stage-
1. Initially collection of shreded plastic is challenge,it is depending on how Municipal are working. How
good is Municipal. Collection of waste plastic is challenge. Hence in this stage –
2. Ist set-up the Team for collection of waste plastic,
3. 2ndly a space and team who can dry the waste plastic and grade it in one place.
4. 3rdly we have to setup the shreding M/C with Team at same place where we are drying and Grading.
5. 4thly same material to be collected to Hot Mix Plant and it should be kept and stored safely.
6. To look the low production Ist use the 2% of plastic in Bituminous Mix.
7. Properly Test in Lab ,In 6 day we get result of lab for Density,Stability,Striping value(affinity with
aggregate),void ratio and Flow.
8. Compare with Mix without Plastic.
9. Field Trial-2% plastic should be mix with aggregate in Bins at Hot Mix Plant by weight.
10. Collect the Field sample and prepare the mould and check the stability.
11. Lay the material at site and take core for testing.
12. Compare all tesing and adjust the % of plastic at Hot Mix Plant.
13. Keep record and photo stage wise.

• A. Initial stage-
Material Required for 1km Road with 5.5m with and 7m width.
Take 50mm DBM as a Base and 40mm BC as a wearing coat for main Road. For Town Road DBM should be taken 0mm and BC be 40mm and
for Street Road MSS is taken 30mm.Density of Mix considered 2.35g/cc
for BC & DBM. Actual should be on the basis of Lab Result.

5. STAGE-PLANNING
-K.J.ANAND
3 Stages in planning
• B. Improvement Stage-
This stage is reaching when plastic is under use for minimum of 6 months continuously.
More quantity of plastic intriguing this stage.
In improvement stage plastic percentage increases from a. 2% to 4% next 4% to 6% next 6% to 8% next 8% to
10%.
In every stage regular lab test is followed.
• C. Implementation Stage
After successful improvement stage for 1 year, Implementation stage is reaching.
In this stage 1 separate bin is added at Hot mix plant in which Plastic will directly reach to aggregate heating
chamber.
It will reduce the quantity of Bitumen, aggregate affinity will increase cause strength will increase.
6. STAGE-PLANNING
-K.J.ANAND
REQUIRED FACILITY
1. Municipal local area(2000 family) with Team of 40-50 labour to do cleaning job in
street and Drain.(Take one family using 1 kg plastic in one month)
2. Total plastic Input for month-2000*1=2000kg
3. Land required 2000 square metre.Godown-1000sqft.
4. Shredded M/C -2no.( Output 100 kg each M/C each day Monthy-
100x20=2000kg)Team-10 no.
5. If one Town have population of 100000 means family is 20000 family Monthly
plastic production from municipal-2000x10=20000 kg=20Tonne 20x12=240 Tonne
per annum(Bring to HOT MIX PLANT)
6. Min Road Re-laying or construction is 20km with BC-40mm then Plastic required
with 2% is 10.34x20=206.8Tonne per annum
8. Step 1-: Plastics waste (bags ,cups , bottles ) made out of PE,PPand PScut into a
size between 2.36mm and 4.75mm using shredding machine.
Step 2-:
The aggregate mix is heated to 165°c (as per the HRSspecification) and
transferred to mixing chamber. Amount of plastic to be added is @8%of bitumen.
9. STEP 3-:
Similarly the bitumen is to be heated up to a maximum of 160°c (HRS Specification) to have
good binding and to prevent weak bonding. (Monitoring the temperatureis very important).
Step 4-: At the mixing chamber, the shredded plastics waste is to be added. It
get coated uniformly over the aggregate within 30 to 60 seconds, giving an oily
look.
10. Step5-:
• Theplasticswaste coated aggregate is mixed with got bitumen and the resulted mix is usedforroad
construction. Theroller usedis 8-toncapacity.
• Step 6-: Theroad laying temperature is between 110°c to 120 °c.And the rollers are usedhave
capacity 8- ton generally.
14. Stripping Value Test
Stripping value less if
Bitu-Grip AND
PLASTIC is not used.
No stripping if Bitu-grip
and plastic is used.
15. COMPARISON BETWEEN ORDINARY BITUMINOUS ROADS AND WASTE PLASTIC
BITUMINOUS ROADS:-
S.No. Properties Plastic Road OrdinaryRoad
1. MARSHALLSTABILITYVALUE MORE LESS
2. BINDINGPROPERTY BETTER GOOD
3. SOFTENINGPOINT LESS MORE
4. PENETRATIONVALUE MORE LESS
5. TENSILESTRENGTH HIGH LESS
6. RUTTING LESS MORE
7. STRIPPING(POTHOLES) NO MORE
8. SEEPAGEOFWATER NO YES
9 DURABILITYOFTHEROADS BETTER GOOD
16. Comparative Benefit
• Shreded plastic is used in mix design it will help to reduce binder and re-
use of waste products to save Enviornment.
• 2% shreded plastic is under use reduced the percentage of Bitumen.
