CONCEPT OF PHYSICAL EDUATION
PEED101 MODULE 1
WHAT IS PHYSICAL EDUCATION?
▪ Physical education is a multidisciplinary field of study
that is integrated in the school curricula, which aims
to provide and develop the holistic aspects of an
individual’s mental, physical, social and emotional
through the performance of skills and participation in
different selected physical activities.
▪ Physical Education is "education through the physical".
It aims to develop students’ physical competence and
knowledge of movement and safety, and their ability
to use these to perform in a wide range of activities
associated with the development of an active and
healthy lifestyle.
AIMS AND BENEFITS
OF PHYSICAL
EDUCATION
 Take the initiative, lead activity,
and focus on improving aspects
of their own performance.
 Discover their own aptitudes
and preferences for different
activities.
 Make informed decisions about
the importance of exercise in
their lives.
 Develop positive attitudes to
participation in physical activity.
Become skillful and intelligent
performers.
Acquire and develop skills, performing
with increasing physical competence and
confidence, in a range of physical
activities and contexts.
Learn how to select and apply skills,
tactics, and compositional ideas to suit
activities that need different approaches
and ways of thinking.
TRAITS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION
▪ PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
▪ SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
▪ EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
▪ MENTAL DEVELOPMENT

Development
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
A person who actively participates
will gain and maintain a healthy
and a great level of physical
fitness. Acquiring physical skills
can motivate an individual to join
physical activities; therefore, the
learner will enhance their healthy
growth and development.
Physical development includes
both growth and ability to use muscles
and body parts for skills. Both gross
(large muscle movements) and fine (small
movement) motor skills contribute to
physical development, and children often
learn a set of skills by a certain age.
SOCIAL
DEVELOPMENT
Social development is about
improving the well-being of
every individual in society so
they can reach their full
potential. Social
development means investing in
people.
It requires the removal of
barriers so that all citizens can
journey toward their dreams
with confidence and dignity.
EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT
EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT REFERS TO THE ABILITY TO RECOGNIZE, EXPRESS, AND MANAGE
FEELINGS AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF LIFE AND TO HAVE EMPATHY FOR THE FEELINGS OF OTHERS.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION OFFERS ACTIVITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF SELF-
EXPRESSION AND EMOTIONAL MATURITY

MENTAL
DEVELOPMENT
Mental development is also
known as cognitive
development. It is basically the
construction of mind activity
such as thought processes,
memory, problem solving and
decision making as well as
over-all intelligence.

IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Physical Education is essential to the
development of motor skills and the
enhancement of reflexes.
It improves our coordination as well
as good body movement, develops
students’ competence and
confidence to take part in arrange of
physical activities, increase self-
responsibility and enjoyment that
become a central part of their lives.
VALUES IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION
THE VALUES OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION CONTRIBUTE TO THE ENHANCEMENT OF A POSITIVE
LIFESTYLE CHANGES WHICH ULTIMATELY LEAD TO A BETTER-QUALITY LIFE. ACTIVITIES LEARNED
FROM THIS WILL ALLOW EVERY INDIVIDUAL TO APPLY IT IN ONE’S DAILY LIFE TO A WELL ROUND
PERSON. THIS IS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MOVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE THAT THE
INDIVIDUAL NEEDS TO LEARN.
DIFFERENT MISCONCEPTIONS
ABOUT PHYSICAL EDUCATION
REST PERIOD
▪ Games and sports require special type
of equipment, apparatus, playfield, etc.
which are costly.
WASTAGE OF MONEY
▪ People think that this is a rest period as
it does not have any academic value.
NO JOB CAREER OR PROFESSION
▪ This opinion is totally wrong. A good
sportsman always behaves in a
disciplined manner and follows rules
and regulations on the sports field and
in real life.
▪ Today special attention is given to
sportspersons for selection in various
competitive examinations. There are
many jobs for sportspersons in various
departments. In many professions’
sportsmen are accepted happily.

PARTICIPATION IN GAMES
ONLY
Many people think that it is
participation in games and sports.
Whereas, physical education
enables a person to maintain
health and fitness through physical
activity.
POOR SOCIAL STATUS
PARTICIPATION IN PHYSICAL
ACTIVITIES IS GENERALLY
CONSIDERED TO BE FOR
THOSE WHO HAVE POOR
SOCIAL STATUS AND ARE
NOT GIVEN ANY
RECOGNITION BY SOCIETY.
WASTAGE OF TIME
Many parents, students and
teachers think that participation in
physical activities is just a wastage
of time.
