Justin Scott provides a portfolio of design projects he completed for a communication design course. The portfolio includes brochures, website mockups, magazine covers, montages, presentations, photodesigns, business identities, flag redesigns, and coded webpages. For each project, Scott provides a description, date, instructor, programs used, objectives, and process for how he completed the design work.

3. Brochure
Description:
Create a brochure for a company of your choice.
Date:

Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign
Objectives:
Create a visually appealing brochure with crisp folds and the
important information.
Process:
To begin, I created a logo in Illustrator and edited photos in Photoshop. I
edited the dolphin photo to work with a text wrap. I ended up needing to redo
the dolphin a bit to get it right.
After creating a rough draft, I went back and change a lot of small things. The
biggest change was probably the amount of color; I added a lot more. I also
made the side bar photos roughly the same size and made them all bleed off the
project. I did a bit of text editing and reduced my body copy to 12 point and then
added color and styles for contrast.
I also changed my ship photo on the back to better fit and then finally made
minor adjustments to make everything look right with the brochure folds.
4. Webpage Mockup
Description:
Website Mockup with log, navigation links, footer and social media icons.

Program(s)/Tools:
Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign
Objectives:
Create a mockup of a website home page with all the functionality needed.
Process:
For this project, I used Photoshop. The logo I had previously done in Illustrator.
I added a quote about Costa Rica and a navigation header with important web
page links. I added a footer with some secondary links. I also added links to
locations in Costa Rica. I felt that while I have a link to locations in the header,
it might help to have other links to these locations to give the user another way
to access these.
For the colors, I used variations of the greens and reds used in the logo and
photos. To finish this up, I added links to 3 of the more popular social media
sites.
5. Magazine Cover
Description:
Design a magazine cover about yourself.
Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130: 11
Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Photoshop
Objectives:
Create a magazine cover using a self portrait and headings that show something
about yourself.
Process:
I began with 4 sketches of ideas I had for this magazine cover.
Next, I designed the magazine cover in InDesign and submitted a rough-draft.
After the instructor and 2 family members gave me suggestions, I worked
towards a final draft. Some changes I needed to make were the placement and
quality of my photo, resizing text and adding some changes to make the type
stand out more, and placement of the magazine title. I ended up using some
bold and italic text to add some variety. I also centered my magazine title in the
black box at the top of the page and moved the word “Monthly” out from in front
of the title show it showed up more.
6. Montage
Description:
Design a spiritual themed montage in Photoshop.

Course/Instructor:

Program(s)/Tools:
Photoshop
Objectives:
Create a montage using a religious quote and images that correspond.
Process:
For this project, I found two images that I felt went along well with my scripture;
mainly a travel theme. In Photoshop, I added a filter to sharpen the background
image a bit and then put a layer mask on the top layer and blended the two.
When using the mask, I tried to include clear views of the plane. I also made
the passengers and destination board stand out a bit more than the rest of that
image.
7. Prezi
Description:
Create a Prezi presentation that shows the programs features and abilities.
Date:

Course/Instructor:

Program(s)/Tools:
Prezi
Objectives:
Process:
For this assignment, I picked a number of types of wildlife well known to Costa
Rica. Most of these I have a little bit of experience with from visiting Costa Rica
and I tried to position the slides close to where the actual animal is found in
the country. Originally, I used a map with town names in the background, but
I decided this made an image that was too cluttered and chose this image that
shows a lot less. I tried to keep the images of animals around the same size and
shape but I found that some really did not resize the same.
I then added some text giving a little information about the animal and made the
circles around the slides darker so they would show up better. I also moved the
Jaguar slide a bit since it was originally located in the map grid and appeared to
put the animal in a hunter’s sights.
8. Photodesign
Description:
Create a photodesign based on a certain color scheme from the image.
Date:
May 18, 2016
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130: 11
Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Photoshop
Objectives:
Use a color scheme based on the colors of the photo.
Process:
I began with a photo that I felt made for a good color scheme and then used four
colors from the image in the rest of the design.
I added color swatches for each color used and labeled the color scheme.
Then I chose a quote that I felt went well with the image of a flowering vine and
made the word challenge bold to make part of the quote stand out. I also used a
serif and san serif font to add some contrast to the design.
9. Business Identity
Description:
Create a logo for a company/service/organization and establish a visual identity
across documents.
Date:
June 2, 2016
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130: 11
Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Illustrator and InDesign
Objectives:
Design a business identity that is consistant throughout everything, including
the letterhead and business card.
Process:
For this project, I made 3 drafts of a logo, and then chose the best based on
feedback. For the business card and letterhead, I added some of the colors from
the macaw and put the necessary contact information on each. I also changed
the logo by getting rid of the black stroke around the bird’s head. I also deleted
the black stroke around the green on the letterhead and changed the contact
text. I added the red rectangle to the letterhead to make to make it more
consistant with the business card.

10. Flag Redesign
Description:
Redesign a current flag that needs improvement.
Date:
June 8, 2016
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130: 11
Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Illustrator
Objectives:
Create a flag design that follows the current rules for a good flag design.
Process:
To begin with, I found a local flag that I felt needed improvement. Stockton,
California, used a elaborate seal on their flag, and I felt that was a good
candidate to redesign. After removing the seal, I thought of iconic things in the
Stockton area, and on major thing that I kept coming up with was the view of
Mount Diablo to the west. Stockton is also on the edge of the San Joaquin River
Delta so it has a lot of sloughs and river channels nearby, so I added the wavy
blue line beneath the image of Mount Diablo to symbolize a river. The colors I
used are the original flag colors and I couldn’t find any reason change them. The
red is used in the California flag, and the blue I felt went very well with the
delta/river idea.
11. Coding
Description:
Code a custom webpage with HTML and CSS using the logo from my business
identity project.
Date:
June 15, 2016
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130: 11
Emily Kunz
Program(s)/Tools:
Notepad ++, Illustrator
Objectives:
Use CSS and HTML to create a working webpage.
Process:
I used the logo I created in Illustrator for the business identity project. Next I
added body text explaining my choice of logo and colors and why I chose this
particular subject. After getting the content finished, I created a CCS stylesheet
and linked it to my HTML page. I then changed colors and formatting the way
I wanted; mainly I changed font-types, font colors and background colors. I
made the body text a unordered list and created a left-aligned footer at the
bottom. I also changed the sizes of headings and made sure they were aligned
horizontally and vertically as I wanted.
