TREASUREMENTS:
Yo Ho Code!!
Digital Technologies – Year 4
PROJECT OVERVIEW YE SCALLYWAGS!
MATERIALS / MEDIA:
Scratch, good old fashioned graph paper,
pencil and ruler.
Using your coding and measurement skills
you will create a Treasure Map, along with
clear written instructions that you (and later a classmate)
will have to follow in order to navigate your way to the treasure.
You will add landmarks that will be obstacles
you must avoid and travel around in order to
reach your prize! YARHARRR!!

THE PIRATE CODE
RULES:
1. Your grid must be at least 5 x 5 squares.
2. Your sprites must be contained within the squares
(including the one who will move!).
3. You must add at least 3 different obstacles that you will need to navigate
and turn at (either before hitting or after passing them).
4. You must travel by squares (step by step, one by one),
either vertically or horizontally. (No diagonal shortcuts!)
5. You must not run into any of your obstacles, if you do, you lose.
6. On successful arrival at your treasure you must add an effect that shows
you have won your prize (either audio or visual, or both)!
THE (LESSON) PLAN OF ATTACK
LESSON 1:
Project overview & discussion. Revisit
Scratch together. Watch tutorials to gain
relevant skills required for our Treasure
Hunt: (Creating and placing backgrounds
and sprites, movement by increments,
turning and effects). Individually practice
your new skills on Scratch.
LESSON 2 (UNPLUGGED):
Grab your graph paper, pencil and ruler to
grid up, draw and plan a treasure map!
Choose and place your pirate’s (or hero’s)
starting location, at least 3
obstacles/landmarks, and treasure in
different locations/squares. Stepping out
your route to the treasure, write
instructions outlining steps required for
your pirate’s movements and turns to get to
the treasure.
LESSON 3:
Time to jump back onto Scratch! Reproduce
your hand drawn treasure map, using new skills
in Scratch. Create 2 templates. First will be the
treasure map with all your sprites (pirate,
obstacles, treasure) in place, and pirate in
starting location. Second, complete the treasure
map navigation (according to your written
instructions) using code to reach your treasure.
LESSON 4:
Time to partner up and travel each other's maps
using their first template (with no code),
create code based on written instruction for the
creator's map.
We will then have discussion and reflection if
time allows.
