Establishing and fostering a safety culture has, quite rightly, become a more prominent topic to consider for safety directors. No matter the industry or organization, it is now commonly accepted that safety culture can have a huge influence on the success or failure of a safety management system. Safety culture is not a program, policy or procedure, it is a reflection of how safety is managed in a workplace. However, it is often difficult to pin down, as it is a somewhat ethereal concept, based on soft components that cannot be easily measured – factors such as accountability, leadership and organizational learning. This difficulty is at the heart of many safety directors’ struggle – how do you pinpoint your organization’s current safety culture? Which activities are having a positive or negative effect? In this presentation, Shannon Crinklaw defines safety culture and provide suggestions and ideas around how to recognize and foster a strong safety culture within your organization. Watch this webinar and learn: How safety culture can be broken down into components The different ways that it can be (indirectly) measured Steps that managers should take to improve it How using Medgate to automate some safety activities assist in building a safety culture

Proceedings available at: http://www.extension.org/67663 Recent research has shown that over half of nitrogen excreted by chickens is lost into the atmosphere via ammonia volatilization before the litter is removed from poultry houses. Large quantities of particulate matter and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are also emitted from animal rearing facilities. During the past decade we have developed and patented an acid scrubber for capturing ammonia, VOCs and dust from air exhausted from poultry and swine barns. The objectives of this project were; (1) to re-design the scrubber to improve the ammonia removal efficacy, (2) conduct full-scale testing of the scrubber under controlled conditions at various ventilation rates, (3) evaluate the cost, practicality and efficacy of various acids for scrubbing ammonia, and (4) install scrubbers on exhaust fans of poultry houses located in Virginia and Arkansas and measure the efficiency of ammonia removal from the exhaust air. The efficiency of ammonia removal by the scrubber varied from 55-95%, depending on the type of acid used, air flow rate, and the internal scrubber configuration. This technology could potentially result in the capture of a large fraction of the N lost from AFOs, while simultaneously reducing emissions of bacteria, dust, and odors, which would improve the social, economic, and environmental sustainability of poultry and swine production.

"ROADMAP to Excellent & Effective SAFETY and HEALTH COMMITTEE" is the main agenda for a 2-day Training Session At the well-known and reputable Institute of Medical Research (IMR), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia conducted/facilitated by me. A golden opportunity to share knowledge and experiences in creating an effective Safety & Health Committee with senior doctors and medical researchers at IMR. This Road map is critical in ensuring the roles and responsibilities of the committee are carried out diligently. There are SEVEN STEPS to complete the journey. STEP 1 - Assess the members' readiness and capacity to perform the intended tasks and responsibilities. STEP 2 - Function as a TEAM STEP 3 - Assess where to start for the team STEP 4 - Decide where to IMPROVE STEP 5 - Test the changes made and monitor progress STEP 6 - Implement and sustain the changes STEP 7 - Spread the changes and counter measures made. Each of these STEPS must be passed through confidently and successfully in order to achieve the effective Safety & Health Committee at your organization.

In this day and age you have probably accepted the fact that you need to establish some sort of safety program into your facility. You have heard some horror stories about employee injuries or seen how much you are paying out on worker’s compensation each year. Maybe you have watched some webinars and maybe seen a presentation on regulatory agencies stepping up enforcement. So, you finally accepted the fact that it is time to buy into a safety program. That is the first of many hurdles to come. Putting together a safety committee will be key and one of the first steps necessary for your safety program. The next question is, “Where do I begin?” Which will then lead into, “Do you want to just put out a posting requesting volunteers or require certain people to participate? Do you need managers or just employees? What are you going to talk about in these meetings? Should there be any extra responsibilities for members? How do we sustain this meeting and keep interest?” Please join KPA consultant Zach Pucillo as he shares his recommendations for establishing and running an effective safety committee. He will share some of his best practices from his 9 years of experience in participating and leading safety committees. Zach Pucillo has been a consultant in the environmental and safety field for the past 9 years. Zach is a Board Certified Safety Professional, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, and an authorized OSHA outreach trainer specializing in safety for general industry. When not in the safety field he enjoys spending time with his family and coaching youth soccer.

Looking to foster a culture that embeds safe performance – requires a leadership team that understands the key components for driving sustainable performance outcomes. Additionally, A bottoms-up focus should be the underlying strategy for starting the conversation – for defining a cross-cultural collaborative process for entertaining all stakeholders ideas. There needs to be a defined “Vision” for what the ideal culture will look like 3-5 years out – to be able to establish a platform for guiding the conversation on moving a process forward to institutionalize a consensus – stakeholder direction. The full integration of the key components for sustainable performance outcomes – has more to do with the application that will embrace a clear understanding of the current culture and incorporating safe performance as a core company value. Many companies fall short on taking the time to evaluate the current state of their safety process initiatives, provide the organizational freedom to engage the collective voice of operations leadership – to set the tone/expectations for what milestones demonstrate that safe performance has become part of the thinking logic of hourly and executive leadership. A critical evaluation gap analysis process - is a starting point for understanding fundamental differences of various stakeholders (management/hourly) in how each level of stakeholder will be positioned to effect change and measured to determine the effectiveness level of engagement.

Every workplace safety program has a foundation. These key elements construct the framework for a solid understanding on how safety works and it empowers and engages everyone on different levels. Once this fundamental understand is achieved, it is easier to develop the policy, written programs, and standard operating procedures to move the process forward.

In this presentation, the speaker will address how the many pieces of safety/health are put together to fit into a larger management system – where the whole is greater than the sum parts. Host employers who hire contractors can utilize the seven core elements to assess their supply chain companies – using a beyond compliance approach to vetting their suppliers.

The following presentation describes the best practices present along with the principles and approaches to implementing and maintaining a safety and health program for a construction firm. OSHA recognizes that a wide variety of small and large construction job sites exist. Some are short-duration, while others may take years to complete; some sites are characterized by frequently changing conditions, while other sites’ conditions may change less often. An effective program emphasizes top-level ownership, participation by employees, and a “find and fix” approach to workplace hazards. The “find and fix” approach to workplace hazards refers to the “Hazard Identification” and “Hazard Prevention and Control” core elements. Because of the wide variety of site conditions, these two core elements should be implemented on a site specific basis in order to effectively detect and correct hazards. The concept of continuous improvement is central to these recommended practices. As with any journey, the first step is often the most challenging. The idea is to begin with a basic program and grow from there. By initially focusing on achieving modest goals, monitoring performance, and evaluating outcomes, you can help your company progress over time along the path to higher levels of safety and health.
