What is the point of a music video?
Music videos are used to promote/ advertise the music and/or artist.
They can include long introductions and narratives.
3. 1950 AND 1960’S DEVELOPMENT
One of the earliest music videos was Tony Bennet walking along Hyde Park.
In the 1960’s, Big Bopper used to perform his songs and they would be aired in TV, even
though it was not notable, he came up with the term “rock video”
Scoopitone Visual duke boxes coined in the 1960’s, visuals did loosely relate to lyrics and
music.
The Beatles- Yellow Submarine
Music videos were either shot on tour – The Beatles- A Hard Days Night – or on location –
Elvis Presley- Jail House Rock.

4. THE MODERN ERA (1970)
The invention of a video replaced the 35mm film.
Performance shots were still used but cameras were given to the
performers to film themselves.
Devo made early self produced music videos in 1970
Devo’s video cassette releases were arguably among the first true
long form of video production.

5. 1980’S
David Bowie – Ashes Tu Ashes: More sophisticated video
Michael Jackson – Thriller : Special effects
Michael Jackson used videos and MTV to showcase his short films.
Heavy editing began.
6. MTV
Madonna owes a lot of her success to MTV.
First music video on MTV was video killed the radio star by The
Buggles.
7. MUSIC VIDEOS TODAY
The information technology era meant people used MTV a lot
less.
