  4. Define VMM 2008 R2, and outline how to use it . Emphasize the difference between built - in tools , such as Microsoft Hyper-V ™ manager and VMM. If students have used VMM previously , ask them which environment they were managing (Virtual Server Administration Website , Microsoft Hyper-V ™ , VMware, or others ). Ask students about alternative solutions that they have used. After discussing the benefits of using VMM, ask students which benefit or benefits they consider most useful for their environment. Module 4: Integrating System Center Virtual Machine Manager with Hyper-V Course 10215A
  5. Describe the role of each VMM component to students . Do not go into great detail, as later modules detail these components. Emphasize that you install VMM components separately. Emphasize that you can install VMM components on the same server or on separate servers to distribute the workload. Questions for discussion Question: Describe one or more scenarios in which you would choose to install the VMM components on separate servers. Answer: Answers may vary, but in general, student answers should indicate that they understand how VMM workloads might be balanced by installing VMM components on separate servers. In addition, students may wish to install the VMM Self-Service Portal on an existing Web server, and administrator workstations are often a logical place to install the VMM Administrator Console. Module 4: Integrating System Center Virtual Machine Manager with Hyper-V Course 10215A
  6. Describe system requirements for VMM installation. Emphasize that system requirements are different depending on if you want to install all VMM components on one server and if you want to install them separately on different server s . Discuss requirements for installing all components on one server, and direct students to an additional reading link or the Student CD content for requirements for each component. Module 4: Integrating System Center Virtual Machine Manager with Hyper-V Course 10215A
  7. Discuss the new features in the R2 version of VMM 2008. Emphasize that the most important enhacement is full support for Hyper-V 2.0 in Windows Server ® 2008 R2. Discuss all new features briefly, and be ready to explain Live Migration and Quick Storage Migration, as students likely will find those features most interesting. Question for discussion Question: Which new feature looks most interesting and most benefi c ial to your organization ? Answer: Answers will vary. Answer: You should not use the VMM Administration Console to migrate a virtual machine that has VMM Server installed. Module 4: Integrating System Center Virtual Machine Manager with Hyper-V Course 10215A
  9. Discuss considerations for implementing the VMM database . Explain that VMM will install Microsoft SQL Server ® 2005 Express during installation, but that it does not support reporting. E mphasize that if you specify a remote SQL Server instance for the VMM database, there are important additional steps you need to perform . Direct students to the additional reading link that the Student H andbook provides for the configuration procedure of remote SQL instance s . Question for Discussion Question: What is the main limitation when using SQL Server 2005 Express Edition as a database for VMM 2008 R2? Answer: Database size (4 GB) is a main limit. If you manage a large number of hosts, it may not be sufficient. Also, you cannot integrate with SCOM 2007 with SQL Server Express. Module 4: Integrating System Center Virtual Machine Manager with Hyper-V Course 10215A
  10. Discuss considerations for implementation of the VMM l ibrary. Emphasize that at least one l ibrary always is present on VMM s erver, while you can add other l ibraries and shares later. Explain two methods to achieve high availability for the library, by using failover clustering or Distributed File System (DFS) . Question: How can you make Library Server highly available? Answer: You can do it by using Failover Clustering for File Server Service or by using DFS . Module 4: Integrating System Center Virtual Machine Manager with Hyper-V Course 10215A
  11. Discuss some considerations for implementing Self- S ervice P ortal. First, emphasize to students that this feature is optional, and it does not have to be implemented. Organizations first should decide if they need it. Explain the purpose of Self-Service P ortal. Module 4: Integrating System Center Virtual Machine Manager with Hyper-V Course 10215A

  25. Describe available options on the Host Properties tabs. Question for Discussion Question: Why is important to properly set parameters for the host reserves? Answer: Host reserves represent resources that are available exclusively to the host. Therefore, you must configure it to provide enough resources for host services to operate normally even when VMs are using the maximum amount of resources. 29. In this lab, students will: P lan the implementation of VMM . D eploy VMM core components . Exercise 1 In this exercise, students will analyze requirements and propose a solution for management of the Contoso virtual environment. Exercise 2 In this exercise, students will first run VMM Configuration Analyzer to analyze a server . Then they will install VMM Server and Administra tor Console components. Finally, they will configure a delegated administrator role . Exercise 3 In this exercise, students will create a host group and manage properties of a host and host group . Before the students begin the lab, read the scenario associated with each exercise to the class. This will reinforce the broad issue that the students are troubleshooting and will help to facilitate the lab discussion at the end of the module. Remind the students to complete the discussion questions after the last lab exercise. Note: The lab exercise answer keys are provided on the Course Companion CD. To access the answer key, click the link located at the bottom of the relevant lab-exercise page. Module 4: Integrating System Center Virtual Machine Manager with Hyper-V Course 10215A
  30. Review questions: Question: How Contoso will benefit from deploying VMM? Answer: Contoso will decrease the number of physical servers and centralize control over the virtual environemnt. Also the deployment of new virtual machines is much faster and more reliable than before . Question: Why is it important to run the VMM Configuration A analyzer before installation? Answer: VMM Configuration Analyzer is a utility that will analyze host s that will be used for VMM and will provide you with report s about potential issues and incompatibilites. Question: Which p roperties can be configured for hosts and hosts groups? Answer: Virtual Machines , Reserves , Networking , Placement , Custom , and Remote. 31. Review Questions 1.What is the main difference between VMM and the built-in tools for virtualization-platform management? Answer: SCVMM 2008 R2 provides centralized administration and management of a virtual environment, helps to increase physical server utilization, and enables rapid provisioning of new virtual machines by the VMM administrator and authorized self-service end users. Also, SCVMM supports features such as P2V conversion, Quick and Live Migration, and PRO. 2.What is the limitation when you install the VMM Server component inside virtual machine? Answer: You cannot migrate that virtual machine to other hosts. 3.In which scenarios is it preferable to use Windows PowerShell rather than a GUI such as VMM Administrator Console? Answer: If you are going to execute tasks that you will perform on large numbers of objects, or you want to apply custom filters to select objects, it is better to use the PowerShell environment. 4.What is the main purpose of using host groups in VMM? Answer: Host groups help you simplify management tasks by allowing you to apply settings to multiple hosts with a single action. Common Issues Related to Desktop Application Support Issue: VMM components will not install. Tip: System requirements are not fulfilled. Check system requirements before running installation process. Issue: You cannot add VMM to the host. Tip: Either the host is running an unsupported virtualization platform, or the type or location of the host is not supported. You also should check the credentials that you are using to connect to a host. Issue: VMM Admin Console will not connect to VMM Server. Tip: Check if all necessary ports between the Administrator workstation and server are open. Real-world Issues and Scenarios Scenario: NorthWind Traders is considering virtualization as a solution for server consolidation and to cut costs. Currently, they are using virtualization mostly for development and testing. Two virtualization platforms are present in their environment: VMWare ESX 3.0 and Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1. They have seven underutilized servers with single-core processor, 2 gigabytes (GB) of random access memory (RAM), and Windows Server 2003 installed. These servers are domain members, and they store some third-party applications that can be reinstalled easily, and company data. Also, the company has bought two new servers with 16 GB of RAM and Quad Core processors, and with Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit installed. Availability of all services is very important to them. Question: What kind of implementation of VMM will apply here? Provide a high-level design without specifying each component’s configuration. 32. Best Practices Related to VMM Remind student to supplement or modify the following best practices for their own work situations: Do not install VMM on a domain controller. If you are managing more than 150 hosts, separate VMM components on dedicated servers. If you want to use advanced reporting features in VMM, use the full version of SQL Server. Tools Point out the location from which you can install each key tool. Let students review the function and usage of each tool . Remind students that they can use this as a master list to help them gather all the tools necessary to facilitate their application support work.
