Cognitive LearningTheory By J.P.
What is cognitivism? Cognitivism is the basis to understanding material. It is commonly referred to as opening the “black box” in the mind. This is valuable and necessary in understanding how people learn.
Many people and their theories make up cognitivism and helped originate it
Originators and contributors Allan Paivio- visual and verbal forms of teaching Robert Gagne- building-block principle Howard Gardner- theory of multiple intelligences Benjamin Bloom- Bloom’s Taxonomy
Classroom implications
What do teachers do? With technology… A lecture based on power point presentation (visual) and instruction/talking of teacher (verbal). Without technology… A lecture based on some other visual object such as poster or flash cards with teacher’s verbal addition.
What do students do? With technology… Take in a better understanding of the material after seeing it and hearing it. Especially with the use of technology (Power Point, etc.) it is more effective. Without technology… Same concept is used however resources to display visuals are limited. Verbal resources rely strictly on just the teacher as opposed to other audio with technology.
What do I think of cognitivism for my own teaching? I believe that cognitivism is a very effective mechanism used for teaching. Most of my teachers in the past and currently use this theory in teaching. It really helps the students master the material. Cognitivism can be used in many different ways to expand the mind and gain intelligence. The theories that make up this teaching style all collaborate and work well together.
