Film analysis
1. Film analysis (The Black Dahlia)
Two policemen see their personal and professional lives fall apart in the
wake of the "Black Dahlia" murder investigation.
Director: Brian Del Palma.
Actors: Josh Hartnett, Aaron Eckhart and Scarlett Johansson.
Mise en Scene: The slicked back hair, the robes and the white vest give
a feel of retribution and the mobster times. The costumes make a retro
feel, with the use of trilbies and trench coats; also they use bass ball
bats as weapons making it fit to the typical New York gangs. The alarm
bell after a window is broke fits in with the authentic time period. The
neon streetlights also make it more retro.
Sound: The authentic Saxophone soundgives sound to suggest the
early 40s New York, a mobster theme. Narration, the voice is a husky
low New York accent.A sound perspective is used whilst the officer
takes out his cuffs and takes away the criminal. When this happens we
can tell that don’t take lightly to criminals also shows their authority in
Ney York.
Camera: Zoom towards the main character to suggest or show his
importance to the film. A pan technique is used to emphasize the
violence in the scene;also this pan technique is used to establish the
setting, making you think of the Noire setting immediately.
Editing: a fade out is used to move from the close up of the character, to
cut to the Noire established setting, this suggests the importance in the
characters and the setting. During the cut from the scene when the
three officers are to the office scene, we call see that no editing
technique or transition has been used, to fit in with the more authentic
theme, the editing has been kept at a minimum to be more believable.
