Three lessons in product management
1. THREE LESSONS IN PRODUCT
MANAGEMENT
What I've learned from building products and teams without
knowing anything about dev or product management
2. Background
Current Role: Product Manager
• Leads all Product Development for all business lines -
SaaS, Services, etc.
Company: TrueLogic (Brand: SEOReseller)
• Digital Marketing company that services agencies
worldwide
• Marketing - tech startup, developing SaaS tools for
agencies, worldwide
10. Not a lot of people talk about what is really the
core of Product Management.
11. – The Internet
“It is your attitude, not your aptitude, that
determines your altitude."
12. Product Management
is Leadership
• It's pacing and strategy
• It's making decisions when its
needed, regardless if it's good
or bad
• It's getting everyone aboard
• It's knowing when to argue and
when to defer
13. Soft Skills are more
important than
Technical Skills
• Technical skills make an
engineer/developer - soft skills
make the Product Manager
• The entire role is all about
communication - written,
verbal, and sometimes even
through charades.
• Empathy and understanding is
key - not only for your
customers, but especially for
your stakeholders
14. Your Ultimate Product
is Your Team
• Your Product may fail today,
but with a great team you'll
succeed tomorrow
• The best systems and
philosophies in the world work
because they have good
people
• Your ideas are only as good as
the people around you who can
make it better.
