Setting The opening cut scene starts on a cart being pulled through a snowy forest to the
village of Helgen. The weather is cold and the atmosphere is depressing. as you
slowly make your way across the dirt road it is quickly established that you are on
your way to be executed by the Imperials after you were found with a group of
Stormcloak troops. The cart moves slowly and the trees block your view giving you a
sense of suspense and being trapped.
Through out the whole cut scene you are
outdoors so a lot of ambient sounds have been
used such as bird calls, soft wind, water streams
ect.
Mood The other prisoners in the cart start making small chat about themselves giving
them a very human personality and emersion. Some Imperial guards even shout out
commands “shut up back there!” setting the mood that you are in trouble.
Much of the mood is conveyed in dialogue . the
voices were probably edited to sound clear and
warm while still giving a sense of despair.
Game genre Skyrim is an open world role playing game with huge expanses of land to explore
with quests in every town and adventures in every tomb or cave, there are 18
different skills to master ranging from bow to sword to spell and also a wide range
of professions to learn as well such as enchanting, smithing, alchemy and so on.
As this game involves magic, I assume the created
a wide range of appropriate sounds for gaining
levels, casting spells and so on.
Narrative Because your character can’t speak, and there is no third person narrative, all
speaking is done by the NPC’s. in this particular cut scene a Stormcloak soldier
captured with you explains everything. He tells you where you are, why you were
captured and who captured you. A lot of information is given in dialogue in Skyrim.
Only the NPC’s can talk but if the player gets too
far away from the NPC you cant hear them so the
player is often locked in place while the Dialogue
is played out making sure the player has heard
what needs to be said but there’s always the
option to skip the dialogue just in case.
