realizing that performance and profits
willfollowoncetheyestablishastrong
culture.
FromRitz-CarltonandNordstrom’s
to Walt Disney World, we learn about
excellence, passion, anticipating
customerneeds,andrespondingatthe
speed of light with a smile.
While each of these companies
offers elevated levels of customer
service and employee engagement, I
continue to be impressed whenever
seeing the Rotary Four-Way Test in
action. At Clear Fork Royalty, we have
basedourcorevalues,missionandvision
largelyuponthosesameconcepts.
AsRotarians,weallknowthat“The
BigFour”fromRotaryInternationalare:

Those very principles led to the
creation of our own “Big Four” at Clear
Fork Royalty. Our company specializes
incashpurchasesoroilandgasroyalties
and mineral rights from individuals,
estates, trusts and companies. We
purchaseoilandgasroyaltiesin21states
from Texas to North Dakota.
Here is the Clear Fork “Big Four”:
1. Treatallinvestorsandroyalty
sellersasiftheyweremembersofour
own family. Just as with Rotary’s “Big
Four,” we concentrate on the truth,
fairness, good will and mutually
beneficial solutions. “Is it the TRUTH?”
2. Never compromise the
conviction that doing the right thing,
even when inconvenient and
financially to our disadvantage, is
always the right thing. In Rotary
parlance, “Is it FAIR to all concerned?”
3. Create and foster such a
positiverelationshipwitheachinvestor
and royalty seller that if they were in
need of similar services in the future,
they would call us without
consideration of any other royalty
company. Repeat customers are the
goalofeverycustomer,inyourbusiness
and in ours. “Will it build GOOD WILL
and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?”
4. Conduct business in such a
straightforward and transparent
manner that we would stand out as a
positive example in the royalty
industry, which is often publicized by
the practices of its bad actors. We
compete with some extraordinarily
ethical companies and, at the same
time, with others who fall short of the
mark. We are focused on remaining
true to our core values and principles.

have a superior definition of ethical
business principles than Rotary

on Andy Taft to report on last night’s
winetastingeventattheCapitalGrille,
hosted by Gloria Starling. Andy, who
hadbeensittinginthebackoftheroom,
madehiswaytothepodium,andhewas
justsooooofriendly,givingex-President
Bo,abighug,ashemadehiswaytothe
front of the room. After sampling
Alison’s tea and giving Todd an
impromptu shoulder massage, he
approached the podium, grabbed the
microphoneandsaid“Idon’tremember
a thing!” and went back to his seat.
Obviously, a good time was had by all.
Eight flights of wine? My goodness!
Thank you, Gloria, for hosting such a
goodtime.
Todd Mulford gave the invocation,
Doug Briley gave his usual boisterous
accompaniment to the National
Anthem, Alison Edwards introduced
guests, and Dr. Susan Blue presented
thenewscast. Thereseemedtobeonly
gloomynewstoreportuntilsheshared
that video games would be offered for
saleasanewconcessionatRangerand
Cowboygamesthisyear,justincasewe
want to watch something with a little
action!
Judge Don Pierson introduced our
speaker, Konni Burton, by saying that
the District 10 State Senate seat she is
running for will be the most expensive
racethisyearotherthanthegovernor,
andwillbecloselywatchedbyall. When
askedhowmanyintheaudiencelivein
District10,roughlyhalftheroomraised
theirhands.
Konni began by telling us she was
borninKerrvillebutgrewupinthesmall
town of Banquete (rhymes with
spaghetti). Herfatherwastheprincipal
of her high school and her mother was
theschoolsecretary. SheattendedUNT,
whereshemetherhusband,andsettled
in Northeast Tarrant County about 30
years ago. Her first career was at a
paper company and then she started
herownweddingconsultingbusiness.
ShesharedthattheStockyardsarea
ofnorthFortWorthisoneofherfavorite
places and she and her family can be
foundtheremostweekends.
Konni was an active volunteer with
The Gladney Center, and adopted two
wonderfulgirlsthere.
In 2012, Konni decided to get
involved in politics. She had watched
WendyDavisgetelectedtotheseatfor
which she is now running, and felt that
she could better represent all of her
conservative neighbors. She believes
thatprosperityshouldnotendwithher
generation.
She shared that her campaign is
about ideas to make Texas strong,
focusing on four issues: Fiscal
Responsibility, Border Security,
Education and Protecting the Rights of
Citizens.
Fiscal Responsibility - She will fight
to pass a budget free of accounting
tricks and decline to pass on debt to
futuregenerations.
Border Security - Washington has
failed to secure the border. She will
support providing resources to law
enforcement, arming them with
manpower and technology to combat
thethreatstoourstatealongthe1,200
miles of border.
Education - She will work to
implement more accountability
standards and help to find a way to
reachouttostudentsinfailingschools.
Protect Rights of Citizens – She
strongly supports the Second
Amendment,andbelievesthateveryone
hastherighttodefendthemselvesand
theirfamilies.
A spirited question and answer
sessionconcludedtheprogram.

HereceivedhisCharteredPropertyand
Casualty Underwriter designation, the
highest designation in the insurance
industry, in 1994; he received his

Additionally,Larryteachespart-timeas
an Adjunct Professor of Business at
MidwesternStateUniversityinWichita
Falls, Texas.
Larry has served his community on
numerous boards, president of almost
all of them, over the last thirty years.
Currently, in addition to Rotary, he is
President of the Wichita Falls Chapter
of the Military Officers Association of
Americaandservesatthestatelevelas
SecretaryandRegionalVicePresident,
TexasCouncilofChapters. Larryserved
20yearsontheboardofSouthsideYouth
Senter in Wichita Falls and is Past
President. HeisalsoPastVicePresident
ofRiskManagementfortheNorthwest
Texas Council of the Boy Scouts of
America. In 2003, he was awarded the
prestigious Silver Beaver Award which
recognizeshismanyyearsofoutstanding
leadershiptoyouth.
LarryservedHospiceofWichitaFalls
for six years (2002 -2008) serving as
President in 2007. He also served the
Senior Citizens of North Texas Board
for six years and as President in 1989.
LarryhasbeenmarriedtoPaulasince
1968. Theymettheirfirstdayincollege,
bothreceivingdegreesfromTexasA&M
University. Paula is a Nursing Home
AdministratorandSocialWorker. They

Directors along with the Classification
and Membership Committee started

wantedthemtobeapartofthefamily.
Rotarians host these Fireside Chats at
venues and businesses across Fort
Worth, where guests can mingle and
enjoy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails.

Havinghadthechancetorepresentour
Clubanddeliverschoolsuppliestosome
Tarrant County organizations today, I
felt that impact. I was not responsible
for the accumulation of the supplies,
thatwasalldonebyyouall,themembers
of our fine Rotary Club. Yet, I got to
enjoythewarmreceptions,appreciative
gestures and kind words of the great
peopleImetdoingtheirbesttomakea
difference at these worthy
organizations.
ACH, Camp Fire of Texas and the
TarrantCountyLiteracyCoalitionallhad
welcoming smiles and kind words that
they asked me to pass along to our
Downtown Fort Worth Rotary Club
members. Behind that message, and
thereasonIwantedtowritetoday,was
thatIfeltagreatdesiretohelpgenerate
moreinthefutureforthem. Asmostof
youknow,walkingthroughthedoorsof
acharitableorganization,youarelikely
to immediately feel two things;
appreciationforthepeopleworkingso
hard and a desire to help.

arranged for an informative, and
delicious evening featuring 8 different
winessponsoredbyJacksonFamilyFine
Wines. This family-owned enterprise
maintains 37 separate vineyards
includingsuchfamousnamesasKendall-
Jackson, Atalon, Freemark Abbey, La
Crema and Stonestreet. I’m not sure
what I enjoyed more, the wine paired
with superb food or the enthusiastic
performance of the Jackson
representative,AshleyDurkin.However,
Idoknowthatwhenthefood,thewine
andthepresentationwereallcombined
in an elegant setting with outstanding
service…letthegoodtimesroll!
My wife, Mary, and I have been to
several wine tasting events over the
years. This one was the top of the
pyramid. As soon as I sober up a bit, I
think I’ll do it again.
