Alexandre Guimaraes (Guima) has been one of the finest coaches ever to lead the Costa Rica
National Team. The Brazilian-born tactician was the only man to guide Costa Rica safely through
qualifiers for two FIFA World Cups; the tournament in Germany was his second.
Guimaraes first arrived in Costa Rica at the age of 12 when his father, a Brazilian doctor, was
commissioned by the World Health Organization to fight against the spread of malaria in this
Central American country. The Guimaraes family settled in the capital city, San José, where
Alexandre took his first steps in the world of professional football.
Thirteen years later, the former National Team coach acquired the Costa Rican citizenship; he
quickly became an integral part of the team and played in all four games during the country’s
historic campaign at Italy 90.
As a player, he achieved a good position at Deportivo Saprissa, winning three titles during a nine-
year period with Saprissa Soccer Team. After retiring in 1992, he kicked off his coaching
career with successful stints at Belén and Heredia, before returning to his beloved Saprissa.
Guimaraes led the team to two league titles. On the back of his success with Saprissa, Guima
became the popular choice to take over as coach of Costa Rica. Following his appointment in
2000, the gifted strategies led the Ticos to a place in Korea/Japan 2002, Costa Rica’s first
appearance on world football’s biggest stage since their heroic participation in Italy.

According to the article, Alexandre Guimaraes is ______________________ coach in Costa Rica. a. an unpopular b. a disorganized c. an outstanding d. an inexperience Alexandre Guimaraes (Guima) has been one of the finest coaches ever to lead the Costa Rica National Team. The Brazilian-born tactician was the only man to guide Costa Rica safely through qualifiers for two FIFA World Cups; the tournament in Germany was his second. Guimaraes first arrived in Costa Rica at the age of 12 when his father, a Brazilian doctor, was commissioned by the World Health Organization to fight against the spread of malaria in this Central American country. The Guimaraes family settled in the capital city, San José, where Alexandre took his first steps in the world of professional football. Thirteen years later, the former National Team coach acquired the Costa Rican citizenship; he quickly became an integral part of the team and played in all four games during the country’s historic campaign at Italy 90. As a player, he achieved a good position at Deportivo Saprissa, winning three titles during a nine- year period with Saprissa Soccer Team. After retiring in 1992, he kicked off his coaching career with successful stints at Belén and Heredia, before returning to his beloved Saprissa. Guimaraes led the team to two league titles. On the back of his success with Saprissa, Guima became the popular choice to take over as coach of Costa Rica. Following his appointment in 2000, the gifted strategies led the Ticos to a place in Korea/Japan 2002, Costa Rica’s first appearance on world football’s biggest stage since their heroic participation in Italy.
