1. Jonathan Steichen Skillset List
VMware Virtual Environment Administration
o Solve common VMware Virtual environment problems by removing excessive snapshots, optimize LUN
provisioning, and address redundancy issues. Utilize thin provisioning technology, thereby increasing
SAN effectiveness
o Migrate systems from physical to virtual and increase density of ESXi hosts. These actions have led to a
drastic reduction in datacenter floor space, and associated costs. I now maintain a 90% virtual
environment.
o Redesign datastores
Upgrade VMFS 3 to VMFS 5, thereby eliminating 2TB constraints
Design datastores according to best VMware best practices.
o Advanced vSphere configuration tasks using PowerCLI, esxcli, vmkfstools and vim-cmd and vMA
o Employ Linked Mode vCenters for disaster situations and ease of management.
o Install vRealize Orchestrator and design workflows. This allows for the ability to schedule routine VM
maintenance during off hours, vastly increasing application owner satisfaction.
o Ability to keep Virtual Machines up to date in regards to virtual hardware and vm tools. Use vSphere
Update Manager to ease remediation of Tools and vHW updates to increase machine performance.
Ability to upgrade VM tools without interruption either supressing the reboot, or setting Tool upgrade
on power cycle.
o Implement HA VM Monitoring. This drastically reduced the need for On Call Engineers to log in and
restart legacy operating systems, during off hours.
o Connect remote sites and datacenters to central vCenter. This lead to increased management
effectiveness and also decreased costs due to being able to retire unnecessary
o Maintained Horizon View VDI system for internal and hosted use. Designed and maintained linked clone
desktop pools. Consulted on a VDI design using 2 node clustered all Flash VSAN storage. Was able to
generate 130,000 random IOPs.
o Utilize vShield Edge for all facets of edge networking for hosted clients. Designed and setup SNAT/DNAT
rules, IPSEC VPN and Load Balancing.
o Maintained internal software defined router. Clustered router to maximize uptime along with
implementing SNORT rules to increase security.
o Deploy Software defined routers for clients for use with a hosted cloud environment.
VMware Virtual Environment optimization
o Reduce vCenter database size by adjusting logging options, statistic levels and database retention policy
o Remove misconfigured resource pools that throttle CPU resources
o Employ HA/DRS and vSphere alarm actions to maximize environment uptime. Use Fault Tolerance to
guarantee uptime on systems barring building disasters.
o Design OS templates to standardize and speed up new server deployments. Deployment times are
typically reduced from over 8 hours to taking less than thirty minutes. New servers are fully deployed
with backups, security and monitoring
o Standardize multi-tiered applications with OVF templates. Standardized applications lead to an increase
in management efficiency, and speed of upgrading systems
o Virtualized SQL server with a combination of PVSCSI adapters, independent persistent disks and virtual
RDMs. DBAs are fully satisfied with performance and increased mobility options a virtualized server
gives them.
o Perform upgrades from vSphere Standard Switching to vSphere Distributed Virtual Switching. This
increases throughput and redundancy, along with solving IP address spacing issues.
o Develop and implement vSphere ESXi Clustering plans. Clustering hosts by similiar EVC mode and tiered
by server and application needs. Utilized Host profiles to reduce complexity of host deployment and
standardize builds.
o Design and install Software defined storage systems for hosted vcloud environment. Deployed to hosts
with NFS resulting in the outperformance of existing SAN IOPs at a fraction of the cost.
o Assign correct resource reservations and share levels for high priority VMs
2. o Design and install vCloud Director.
o Utilize SSDs along with vFlash on VMs to increase performance. Identify high read rate systems, and
utilize vFlash to cache reads locally. This vastly increases OS performance, along with reducing write
latencies on the SAN by about 35% on these systems.
o Implement jumbo frames on switches and enable Multi Nic vMotion. This drastically reduces
engineering resources needed to deploy firmware updates and patches to Hosts and decreases vMotion
migrations to a fraction of the time
o Use Cached Insight to drastically reduce Scan traffic.
o Use vCOPs to monitor and maximize environment. Vigilant in monitoring and remediating actions with
the Heatlh, Risk and Efficiency Badges.
VMware Virtual Environment Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Planning
o Design numerous Disaster Recovery solutions. Solutions include hosting, hybrid cloud services, or
replicating to another DC internally.
o Migrate VMs from Physical RDMs to either Virtual RDMs or VMDKs to increase mobility.
o Employ Storage DRS to distribute load based on space and IO. Set runtime rules to run off hours to
balance clusters.
o Able to maintain 100% uptime and application owner satisfaction while ESXi cluster was severly
resource starved.
Was able to use ESXTOP to vigilantly monitor VMs for swapping or stunned cpu times.
Working with other Departments
o Work extensively with Networking Departments and Vendors to implement LACP.
Additional Skillset
o designed infrasturcture for XenApp 7.6 and SCCM 2012. *(did you also deploy?)
o Redesigned Symantec systems. Designed Backup Exec to utilize Quiesced snapshots eliminating the
need for agents, and increasing speed to completion.
o Used vShield Manager along with Endpoint Manager to embed Endpoint Protection inside of Templates.
Training
o Train IT Staff on how to deploy and maintain servers in an enterprise VMware environment .
o Recruit clients, set up their environments and train them on how to use their Software Defined
Datacenters.
