power from a primary drive shaft
to a secondary shaft.

4. ROTOR
The rotor is fixed to the primary
drive shaft with a key or other
connection

5. ARMATURE

6. FLAT SPRING
The flat spring is riveted to the
armature.

7. PULLEY (OPTIONAL)
The flat spring is then riveted
or screwed to a hub.
Or in this case, a pulley, which
is belt-connected to the
secondary shaft.

applied to the electromagnet

OPERATION

9. ... a magnetic field is created

10. The magnetic field creates a
circuit and passes through the
magnet, hub, and armature.

11. The magnetic field deflects
the flat spring and pulls the
armature across a small airgap

12. The friction lining in the hub and
the armature create a friction
connection and the secondary
shaft rotates with the primary.

13. When power is released from the
magnet, the flat spring pulls the
armature back.
Without the friction connection
the primary and secondary
shafts are disconnected.
