4. MEANING OF PHILOSOPHY
Etymological meanning of philosophy
• The word philosophy literally means love of wisdom.
It is derive from two greek words philos (love)
and Sophia (wisdom).
• Thus philosophy means love of wisdom. In this way search
of wisdom or truth is called philosophy, and the man
who engages himself in this search is called a philosopher.
• Pythagoras (580-500, B.C) a greek mathematician and Philosopher,
who coined the word “love of wisdom”
5. • In his famous book “Republic” Plato says
He who has a taste for every sort of knowledge
and who is curious to learn and never satisfied may be justly
termed a philosopher.” The introduction of the terms “philosopher”
and “philosophy”
Has been ascribe to the great thinker Pythagoras.
• The study of ideas about knowledge, truth, the nature and meaning
of life, etc.
• a set of ideas about how to do something or how to live

6. • They were first to systematize the laws of thought
but later, they emphasize material success and the ability
to argue any case irrespective of it’s Truth.
• Originally the term Philosophy was given material meaning
by Herodotus (485- 425, B.C) a greek historian known as the “father
of history” and Gorgias (485-380, B.C) a greek orator and also a sophist.
• They used the term in restricted sense to refer
to Philosophy as theoretical knowledge, that is knowledge for its own sake.

• Philosophy is the Love and pursuit of wisdom
the search for basic principles ( The new webster’s dictionary of
the English Language, 1995)
• Philosophy is a rational critical thinking of a more
or less systematic kind about the conduct of life,
the general nature of the world and the justification
of belief. ( Encyclopedia Americana, 2003)
• A guide to a way of life
8. The study of the fundamental nature of knowledge,
reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic
discipline. Philosophy is the tenacious attempt of reasoning
men to think through the most fundamental issues
of life, to reach reasonable conclusions on first
and last things, to suggest worthwhile goals that
can command loyalty of individuals and groups.
9. • The study of Philosophy has been expanded from
it’s traditional meaning to include the study of man,
matter and the universe.
10. IMPORTANCE OF PHILOSOPHY
• The study of Philosophy enables us to think
carefully and clearly about the important issues.
• In studying philosophy, we learn to take a step
back from everyday thinking and to explore the
deeper, bigger questions which underpins our thought.
• The focus in the study of Philosophy is
to learn not what to believe, but how to think.
11. • Studying Philosophy sharpens your analytical abilities enabling you
to identify and evaluate the strength and weakness in any position.
• It hones your ability to construct and articulate
Cogent arguments of your own.
• It prompts you to work across disciplinary boundaries
and to think flexibly and creatively about problems

•Philosophy promises us to have better understanding in ourselves.

by being creative he develops a philosophical
perspective on problems issues and concerns that is unique
and distinctive. He engages his life on deeper
level to give meaning to it.
• Philosophy helps the student to be imaginative by being
imaginative he is able to deal openly with new
responsibilities and changes in how he sees things.
• Philosophy provides the student with better and intellectual
perspective and outlook.
13. • Philosophy gives a student’s personal freedom the freedom
from biases, prejudices and convinction and tyranny of customs
that have grown up his mind.
• Philosophy helps the student to refine his power
of analysis the power to think critically, reason,
evaluate, theorize and justify.
