4. A CV isn’t a list of everything you have
ever done; it is a marketing document.
It should focus on those skills and
experiences most relevant to your
target employer. Your mission is to
ensure that, after a 20 second scan, the
employer can pick out evidence that
you have exactly the skills and
experience they are looking for.
5. A CV (Curriculum Vitae) is a
marketing document in which
you are marketing something:
yourself! You need to “sell”
your skills, abilities,
qualifications and experience to
employers.
6. The equivalent of the CV in the
United States is the Resume.
UK calls it CV.
They both have the same
objective of outlining job
talents.
7. A CV is a more detailed
synopsis of your background
and skills, while Resume is less
detailed.
A CV is tailored made while a
Resume can be used to apply
for various positions.
8. 1. Identify the skills and experience
that the employer is looking for.
They are the criteria against which
your CV will be assessed, and
should be listed on the job
description, website or job advert.
If you cannot find them, ask the
recruiter.
9. 2. Think and Try to choose
examples that show you
using the skills needed in a
way which is similar to
how they would be used in
the role.
10. 3. Decide which sections
you need in your CV, then
decide on section titles
and order.
11. 4. Incorporate your
examples into the most
relevant section/s of your
CV. Make sure you have
provided evidence for
every job requirement.
12. 5. Triple check ALL spelling
and grammar and ask
someone else to check this
too. Many employers will
regard even one error as an
indication of poor motivation
for the job.
13. 6. Use a checklist as given
in the subsequent
paragraph.
14.
15. 7. Write a covering letter
to accompany your CV,
referring to guidelines in
our Covering Letter Help
sheet.
17. Do ensure professionalism in
the presentation of your CV.
Do make sure your email
address contains your first
name and last name. E.g. :
oluwaseyihassan@gmail.com
18. Do have various versions of
your CV for different job
roles.
Write in 3rd Persons.
19. Don’t use a long or inappropriate
email address. For example:
iamasuccessfulandexcellentstudent13
@gmail.com
Don’t use pen on any part of your
CV or allow stain
Don’t use nicknames.
20. Don’t put too much of work
experiences especially when
they are all in a single year.
(Some employers look for
consistency of employment)
This is peculiar to graduates that have been working before
though.
21. Don’t put so much complicated
things on your CV. Only put
relevant and tailored made
information.
Don’t make your CV so long
unnecessarily.
