3. Create an original or derivative ICT
content to effectively communicate a
visual message in an online environment
related to specific professional tracks.
5. An image editor is a software application
that allows the photo to be edited and
enhanced. It can be an online application
(www.canva.com), offline software (Adobe
Creative Suite) and open source (GIMP
software and SketchUp - formerly Google
SketchUp). The image file format that can be
used are JPEG or JPG, TIFF, GIF and PNG.
6. An image editor is an application
that contains tools that can alter
digital photos and images. This
type of application is used to
enhance photos and is typically
used by graphic editors and artists.
7. What’s In
This lesson provides information
about the image editing applications
using GNU Image Manipulation
Program (GIMP), a free image
software editing tool.
8. What’s New
Using your smart phone,
capture an image that you
want to use as a subject for
image editing.
Activity 1.1 Capture the Moment
9. Image File Formats
File formats, specifically image file
formats, are facilities or methods to
store and organize digital images. The
manner of interpreting digital image
files is due to the format of storing and
coding the image files.
10. Image File Formats
The elements of the picture, which are
referred to as pixels or picture elements, are
arranged and stored in a manner dictated by
the format of the image. Furthermore, the size
that an image occupies in the storage device
is directly related to the formatting used.
11. Compression Methods
Lossy and lossless compression
are two different methods for
reducing the size of digital data
files.
12. Compression Methods
Lossless compression refers to a compression method
where the original data can be perfectly reconstructed
from the compressed data without any loss of
information. This means that the compressed file is an
exact replica of the original file, and there is no loss of
quality in the process of compression.
13. Compression Methods
Lossy compression is a compression method where some
amount of data is lost during the compression process,
resulting in a smaller file size. The lost data cannot be fully
recovered, and the compressed file will not be an exact replica
of the original file. However, lossy compression can still
produce high-quality results while significantly reducing the
file size.
14. Compression Methods
In summary, lossless compression produces a
compressed file that is an exact replica of the
original file, while lossy compression
sacrifices some data in the compression
process to achieve a smaller file size.
15. Image File Formats
Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG or JPG)
-This is a compression method that complies with the
JPEG File Interchange Format (JFIF). This format applies
a "lossy" compression method to image files, which
means that a huge number of pixels are lost or
discarded in the storing the image. The information is
not lost, however, but a great space for storage is saved.
16. Image File Formats
Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) - A lossless
or lossy compression method that is widely
used for professional photography and
printing. TIFF compression can use either
lossless or lossy compression algorithms,
depending on the intended use of the
image.
17. Image File Formats
Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) - This is a
popular file format for storing graphical
images with fewer colors. This file format
supports 256 colors only. GIF compression
method uses lossless compression techniques
18. Image File Formats
Portable Network Graphics (PNG) - The
intention for the creation of this file format is
to be a free and open source substitute for
GIF. This file format is expected to be fully
compatible with online applications. This is a
lossless compression method; thus, it is also
used in editing applications.
19. Image File Formats
BMP (Bitmap) - A lossless compression
method that is used for images that require
very high resolution, such as medical
images or technical drawings. BMP
compression does not use any compression
algorithms, and the file size is directly
proportional to the image resolution.
20. Image File Formats
RAW (Raw Image Format) - A lossless
compression method that is used for digital
photography, where the camera sensor data is
stored directly without any processing. RAW
compression does not use any compression
algorithms, and the file size is directly
proportional to the image resolution.
22. What is It
GIMP- GNU Image Manipulation Program
GIMP, which stands for GNU Image Manipulation
Program, is a free and open-source image editing
software. It is available for various operating systems,
including Windows, macOS, and Linux. GIMP offers a
wide range of features and tools for image editing and
manipulation, making it a popular alternative to
proprietary software like Adobe Photoshop.
23. What is It
It is a basic part of GIMP that
contains the window that has tool
box, work area and layers
window. (see Figure 3.1)
