Do every job to your best ability even if it seems pointless. You never know what your boss's

Job / Profession
Job Title: Programme Manager (So many people have job titles these days that don't say much
about what they actually do)
What do you actually do in this job?
I work with schools, entrepreneurs, researchers and government trying to find the best ways of
using technology in schools. Practically that means lots of talking to people about what we know
about technology and learning, presenting and speaking at conferences, trying to persuade
people to try new things, and visiting schools and seeing what teachers and pupils are doing
with technology. I spend quite a lot of time reading interesting things, and lots of time thinking
and working out ideas about how technology changes learning. I'm learning myself all the time,
which I like.
Sometimes I spend a lot of time in offices in meetings and reading and replying to emails. Most
people these days do a lot of this, but this is the boring stuff so I try to do it as efficiently as
possible.
I get to travel around quite a lot. Often this is to boring places like conference centres but these
are always made more interesting by all the friends I have met through work who I often bump
into and get to work with and catch up with. Sometimes it is to interesting places like the frozen
North of Finland or a trip next month to New York.
Where do you work?
Based in an office in central London, sometimes from home, often travelling to different places.
Where is the best or most amazing place you have worked?
Probably the Arctic Circle in Finland a few years ago on a study visit to learn about Finnish
schools (and learn some Skiing!).
What other jobs have you had?
When I finished University I spend some time working in music and radio. I was in an electronic
music band, worked in studios, and ran club nights and DJed. I supported a few big bands and
DJs including Example, Foals and Pendulum.
Long Sutton Primary Careers Information
This is exciting, but it doesn't pay much in the early days, so I used to also work in schools
helping with technology and ICT. I enjoyed helping people learn so I trained to be a teacher. I
then worked as a primary school teacher for a few years, then was offered the opportunity of
working in a University teaching people to become teachers. There I got interested in research
and how governments make education systems work.
I moved to my current job partly because it was a chance to work more on research, but also
because I wanted to spend some time living in London.
What qualifications would the children need to get your job?
A degree. I also have a Masters degree. When I'm talking to people about that it is less about
proving that I got it like earlier qualifications, and more about sharing what I have learned from
studying it. At school it can seem like you 'must have' certain qualifications as if they are on a
tick list. However, when you get into many jobs so long as you have the basics its more about
being able to talk about what you have learned. Thinking about what you are learning and how
you are developing is important when studying, not just aiming to get it all finished and out of the
way. When you have a job interview your qualifications are just the start to a conversation.
If the children wanted to do the same job as you, what can they
do to make it happen?
If you were aiming for the job I do now at the start, you wouldn't start by doing what I have done.
To get here quickly you'd be best off studying for a Masters degree, applying for internships with
charities, and then applying for jobs as a researcher or a project manager.
It's not always about getting one place quickly though. I never planned to do what I'm doing
now, but I did always plan to do things that were interesting and fun to me and do some good.
What is the best piece of advice you ever received about your
education or work?
I once worked with someone who had been a priest, a software engineer, a teacher and
become a Head Teacher all before he was 40. He advised me to keep following what is
interesting and fun and not worry about career rules other people tell you too much. You have to
think about 'the way things work' a bit, but only enough to understand it and use it to your
advantage. Breaking the rules causes you trouble, but building on top of them with all your own
ideas about what you want to do and how you want to do it is good.
What is the best advice you could give to the children?
Rather than asking what you want to do when you grow up, ask what kind of life you want to
have. Then figure out what you can do that fits in with that, or that makes it happen.
Long Sutton Primary Careers Information
Is there another job that you wish you had done at some time?
I don't think there's any point wishing. If you want to do it, aim to do so some time. You don't
have to choose one job for life.

What is your educational background?

Job / Profession
Business Analyst / Company Owner
What do you actually do in this job?
I work with organisations to help them put IT systems into place, which help them to manage
their relationships, usually with their customers, or to find new ones, using marketing methods,
and to manage their relationships with their existing customers via various sales processes.
But for some organisations it might not be about customers at all, it might be about ensuring that
they can find experts in a particular field of science, so that they can work together to study how
diseases emerge and spread in the population.
My role is to understand how organisations do things, so that information systems can be built
to make their work easier.
Where do you work?
Depends on the role, but at home or my own office at present, in London
Where is the best or most amazing place you have worked?
Stockholm in Sweden.
What other jobs have you had?
I was a labourer for my dad, who was a builder before he retired, when I was a teenager, in the
summer holidays for a few years. He was trying to make me want to become a builder like him,
but I said no - I'd already decided I wanted to make computer software.
My first proper job was writing computer software, on huge mainframe systems for Experian in
Nottingham. It did not fulfil my dreams of writing the artificial intelligence for computer games...
so I left!
I then did some GIS Data Capture for East Midlands Electricity.
I then worked as an IT Manager and in this role I learned a lot about how businesses use
Long Sutton Primary Careers Information
Information Systems.
I then left for London to work for a business software company, where I began to specialise in
my current area of expertise.
What qualifications would the children need to get your job?
I would recommend at least up to 'A' Level, and it would be easier with a degree. I have neither,
though I did get an 'A' Level equivalent computer programming qualification which got me my
start. I always had the sense from others with degrees that they had an easier time starting
their careers.
If the children wanted to do the same job as you, what can they
do to make it happen?
My job is quite specific and requires business knowledge - university can teach you some of
this, but a lot of it is learned over time once you have a job.
Technical skills normally come first when you get into IT, so If you love the idea of coding or
making websites / apps, just do it! It is hard at first but a lot of fun when you 'get it'. It will be
much easier to get a job if you have a genuine passion for something, which is better than any
qualification.
What is the best piece of advice you ever received about your
education or work?
This was at a Stags Supporters Club Christmas party...!
The chap's Name was Steve. Unsure of his surname. I laughed at his dancing and he thought I
was too serious, that I should relax. We talked about our work, he listened and then said "use it
as your University."
It always stayed with me, and I did exactly that. It paid off.
What is the best advice you could give to the children?
Do what you love.
To be good at something, and to enjoy it, it is much easier if whatever it is gives you a 'buzz'.
Is there another job that you wish you had done at some time?

Good grades in at least English and Maths at GCSE, and good grades in science subjects help.

If the children wanted to do the same job as you, what can they

If you're interested in becoming a doctor, nurse or paramedic, then the best thing you can do is
get involved in the world of healthcare. St John's Ambulance cadets, work experience with a GP
surgery or hospital, and volunteering in a care home are all great, but if you're too young for that
just now then just work hard at school to make sure you have the best chance later on. Not
kidding, I think a lot of my enthusiasm for medicine came from watching medical TV

Farmer
What do you actually do in this job?
I work in the production of red meat, beef and lamb. In order to produce this vital, healthy and
sustainable product we need to graze the animals on grasses and look after them through the
winter months when the grass stops growing. I work on a farm that is approx. 1000 acres, that's
around 500 football pitches in size. I work outside for most of the time though IT plays an
increasingly large role in our work. We already have EID systems for the sheep and we are
working towards EID systems for the cattle. We also have the added benefit of working in the
countryside, lots of fresh air and a huge variety of everyday jobs. I can honestly say that no two
days are the same. We sell the young cattle at around 10 months of age and the lambs are
sold at around 9 months of age. Oh, and you also get to drive some really big tractors!
Where do you work?
On a farm located on the Mendip Hills, Somerset

farming, though we are the bedrock to this huge industry; there's also science research,
genetics, R&D, soil health, animal health, sustainability, breeding improvements, transport,
logistics, building design, renewable energy, food science, retail and the list goes on. We are all

HMRC Criminal Investigator
What do you actually do in this job?
Essentially the job is the police wing of HM Revenue & Customs; we have similar powers to the
police including the power of arrest. Much of the work we do is plain clothes & targets organised
crime gangs involved in smuggling of counterfeit tobacco, cigarettes & alcohol. These same
gangs are often involved in people trafficking and we will work jointly with police & immigration.
Another aspect of our work is targeting the retail end of smuggling operations & will involve
raiding shops & residential premises.
Finally we also work in combating Tax Evasion and Tax Fraud, these are mostly white collar
criminals who can make millions of £ by cheating the tax payer.
Where do you work?
Nationwide
Where is the best or most amazing place you have worked?
The cutters, small fast boats designed to intercept smugglers.
What other jobs have you had?
When I first left school I worked as a coal miner. Although the job was physically very hard and
very dirty, I really loved the job.
I did very badly at school I'm afraid (I was quite lazy) and when the mines all closed I had no
qualifications. With a friend we pooled our redundancy money to set up a security business, we
were both pretty poor businessmen & our business failed & we lost all our money.
I had to get some proper qualifications to get back in to job market. So I went back to college,
then went on to University. While I was studying I worked in a knitwear factory in Sutton in
Ashfield for 3 years, it was a bit boring packing tights into boxes all night, but the people who
worked there were good fun to work with and it paid the bills.
After working in the factory I finished my studies & went to work at the Inland Revenue (HMRC)
as an auditor before moving into Criminal Investigations about 5 years ago.
Long Sutton Primary Careers Information
What qualifications would the children need to get your job?
HMRC and the Civil Service in general don't always expect new recruits to have qualifications,
depending on the role that you are applying for.
Although the Civil Service is under a lot of financial pressure with cuts, it is still a good sector to
work in. They are a reasonably good employer and if you can get into any Government
Department, there are still lots of opportunities to gain additional qualifications in post. The Civil
Service also operate a policy of recruiting internally across departments, so there is nothing to
stop you going for a complete change of career, if you find you are getting bored or stale in a
role.
If the children wanted to do the same job as you, what can they

Civil Service still recruit young people at entry level, they can often be found at jobs fairs and
there guidance on recruitment can be found on
www.gov.uk/government/organisations/civil-service/about/recruitment
What is the best piece of advice you ever received about your
education or work?
To be perfectly honest, good advice was in short supply when I was growing up. Where we lived
it was assumed you would leave school at 16 and go straight into mining. Because the jobs
were well paid & plentiful I don't think our parents ever pushed us to do anything different.
What is the best advice you could give to the children?
However boring a subject might seem at school, never underestimate the value of knowledge,
stuff that seems totally irrelevant now could be crucial in 10 years.
If you don't get the result you'd hoped for at school, it's not the end of the world; education is
something you can continue to gain for the rest of your life.
Finally don't be afraid to go for it, if you have a career in mind that you know you want to do, you
may not be able to take the direct route, but go for it anyway.
Is there another job that you wish you had done at some time?
I wanted to be a teacher when I left the mines. Ending up in the Civil Service was a happy
accident. When I get too old to chase smugglers, I will try to get into teaching again.

What do you actually do in this job?
I work with schools in the city to support them to use all kinds of technology to help students
learn. For example I may meet with a Head Teacher to talk about how we can help the school
improve speaking and writing using tablets, or I may be training teachers to teach the new
Computing curriculum. Other times I'll work with a class of children to create an animation or
film, or to program in Scratch. I get to try out lots of new technology in this job and see how it
can help people learn and achieve more. Right at this moment I am learning Python
programming language!
Where do you work?
Sheffield City Council
Where is the best or most amazing place you have worked?
Here - for the job. Patterdale Youth Hostel - for the location!
What other jobs have you had?
After university I volunteered with Oxfam to give talks on their work in schools and help raise
awareness of campaigns. After that I worked in a youth hostel in the Lake District for a summer
season - that was a brilliant way to live in a beautiful place and earn some money at the same
time. My first proper job was as a teacher of modern languages, and I taught in two different
schools. Then I worked for the council creating interactive digital materials.
What qualifications would the children need to get your job?
I wouldn't be able to do my job if I hadn't first qualified as a teacher. To do that I needed a
degree, and then to complete a PGCE. After that though, I mainly needed a passion for
education and technology and lots of experience.
Long Sutton Primary Careers Information
If the children wanted to do the same job as you, what can they
do to make it happen?
To become a teacher, get some experience working with young people, try tutoring or
volunteering in a school. Make sure you do actually enjoy it! Then decide what you would like to
teach and complete a degree in that. In order to do something similar to my role, you need to be
interested in technology and how it helps people learn, and be able to show other people.
What is the best piece of advice you ever received about your
education or work?
Make sure you do something you enjoy!
What is the best advice you could give to the children?
Don't just think about the subjects you need to study to do a job, think about the personality
traits and working environment too. You may love languages but don't become a translator if
you like working with other people. Don't consider a sales job if you're a bit shy etc. And don't
think that you are stuck in one particular direction - people nowadays will have lots of different
careers. I was going to be an engineer, and got a place to study it at university. After I sat my
maths A level I realised it really wasn't the career for me and I ended up studying languages
instead. It was the best decision I made as I loved languages, but considered engineering
because I was a girl who was good at maths and physics.

What is the best piece of advice you ever received about your
education or work?
Your time at school is the important foundations for life; however, it's the walls and roof of
adulthood that defines your qualities for all to see.
What is the best advice you could give to the children?
If you find school and education a struggle, as I did, don't consider yourself a failure if you leave
education after underperforming; you have the rest of your life to succeed and continue learning
and progressing as an individual. Life is a lesson, the only rules should be to be good and be
happy.

What do you actually do in this job?
Help people solve business problems, transform their organisations and grow profitably.
Where do you work?
UK / Australia / Europe
Where is the best or most amazing place you have worked?
Right here, right now! (And Australia)
What other jobs have you had?
I currently own and run my own businesses, but prior to that I worked in the big consultancy
firms, and prior to that I was a Civil Servant in the Department for Education.
What qualifications would the children need to get your job?
Experience is the most important qualification - they need to get involved in business challenges
and problems as early as possible and develop tools and insights to solve them.
Personal motivation is also another really important qualification - without this you won't get
anywhere and nobody will listen to you.
Then after that, you'll need to consider getting a degree and an MBA - though there are plenty
of consultants and business owners out there who don't have these, they helped me with my
career path.
If the children wanted to do the same job as you, what can they
do to make it happen?
Get involved in business problems and challenges as quickly as possible. If you are doing work
experience, do all you can to understand the bigger picture and the challenges the business is
facing. Be enquiring - ask questions and read around the challenges that the business is facing.

What is the best piece of advice you ever received about your

1 - Take the option that give you more options; and focus on being the best in the world at what

What is the best advice you could give to the children?
Find out who is doing what you want to do and learn from them - ask for help. Get a mentor or
coach as soon as possible - ideally more than one.
Set your standards and expectations high - if you don't you won't get there.
Look for the best peer group around - the most fun, ambitious go getting people you possibly
can - and spend time with them.

Started out working in a shop 25 years ago, worked my way up through the ranks, then moved
to Head Office, then moved to a manufacturer - stayed in manufacturing for 10 years before
moving into consultancy, then moved back into manufacturing.
What qualifications would the children need to get your job?
To work with me in my current job role, with no experience then the only route into the business
is on the graduate scheme. The requirements are a 2:1 degree to be considered for the
scheme. With no degree then it would probably take 15-20 years working up through the ranks
and getting promotions.
If the children wanted to do the same job as you, what can they
do to make it happen?
The only way any young person could do my job is to achieve in education. Passing GCSE's, A
Levels and Degrees. Or have a long history of work experience.

What is the best piece of advice you ever received about your

Educational achievement enables you to stay in control of your choices in life - the moment you
lose the ability to choose what you do, then you stop being in control of what happens to you.
What is the best advice you could give to the children?
I interview young people for jobs all of the time - the main thing that most of them are lacking
are being worldly wise; have some interests, be aware of the world around you, watch the news,
read a newspaper, have an opinion on something.

What do you actually do in this job?
I am an Adviser for Babcock School Library Service. I visit primary and secondary schools
across Devon and work with teachers and pupils. I help with organising libraries and classroom
reading areas, helping to set up new libraries, book promotion activities with pupils, library skills
sessions, staff inset about anything to do with books and reading and also run workshops for
parents. Sometimes I help run courses for teachers and librarians. I help teachers find really
good books to use with their pupils, especially to teach literacy.
Where do you work?
Devon
Where is the best or most amazing place you have worked?
Nearly every school I work in! Schools are amazing places.
What other jobs have you had?
I've only every worked in libraries. I did work experience in a library in Exeter when I was 16.
The Manager then asked if I would like a Saturday job! I worked in the Children's library on
Saturdays and in the school holidays whilst doing my A levels. I was also lucky to be able to
come back from Newcastle and work in the holidays whilst doing my degree. My first
professional post was in a public library in Torquay.
What qualifications would the children need to get your job?
A degree in librarianship (except now it would be called Information science or knowledge
management!) and some experience of working In-educational settings. Our professional body
is called CILIP http://www.cilip.org.uk

the person to whom you should write to ask for a work experience placement. That way your
request should get to the right person. In the meantime many public libraries enlist the help of
young people to help promote their service to other young people. So for example the summer
reading challenge which is run in most libraries http://readingactivists.readingagency.org.uk
What is the best piece of advice you ever received about your
education or work?
As a manager "Never ask somebody to do something you are not prepared to do yourself" and
from my tutor at University "Never say never". I still keep this as my mantra. Sometimes in a
working environment you can feel as if your good ideas are being blocked but there is usually a
way round it, you just have to be creative and politely persistent!
What is the best advice you could give to the children?
Have a go! Try any opportunities that come your way. If you think you have found a career you
might be interested in then find out as much about it as you can. At secondary school if you
don't have a clear idea of what you might want to do later on then keep your options open by
having a range of subjects e.g. Humanities and sciences. Be curious in life and ask questions,
it's amazing what you learn!
Is there another job that you wish you had done at some time?
Not really, I love my job and find it very rewarding. Back at school though I did want to be a
pathologist!

Long Sutton Careers book

  • 1. Long Sutton Primary Careers Information Name Chris Puttick What is your educational background? Degree Job / Profession Entrepreneur What do you actually do in this job? I'm in charge of everything (and so nothing). Making people happy. The duck. Where do you work? At home & elsewhere Where is the best or most amazing place you have worked? I work there What qualifications would the children need to get your job? None (but the associated learning and connections made while studying really, really helps) If the children wanted to do the same job as you, what can they do to make it happen? Come up with a business idea or 5, make them happen. What is the best piece of advice you ever received about your education or work? "You should go to university and study engineering" What is the best advice you could give to the children? There are lots of choices. The ones you make now should make sure you keep on having lots of choices. Careers don't have to be for life - you can have more than one.
  • 2. Long Sutton Primary Careers Information Name Bill Lord What is your educational background? GCSEs, A levels, Degree Job / Profession Head teacher What do you actually do in this job? I get to work with a range of people and can see the impact of my work on a daily basis. I don't do the same thing every day. Where do you work? South Lincolnshire Where is the best or most amazing place you have worked? Bursa, Turkey What qualifications would the children need to get your job? They would need to do A levels and a degree. It doesn't have to be a teaching degree. If the children wanted to do the same job as you, what can they do to make it happen? Ask to do voluntary work in a local school when at Secondary school. What is the best piece of advice you ever received about your education or work? You only have to work hard for a few years to have a huge impact on the rest of your life. What is the best advice you could give to the children? Go for a job doing something you love and which will allow you to live the life you want.
  • 3. Long Sutton Primary Careers Information What is your educational background? Higher Degree (MA / Doctorate) Job / Profession Teacher What do you actually do in this job? Teach Y4, promote ICT & the New Curriculum Where do you work? Carshalton Where is the best or most amazing place you have worked? Weyfield Primary (School) Academy What other jobs have you had? Copy Consultant at Kinko's Waitress at Grandmother's Restaurant What qualifications would the children need to get your job? Teaching degree If the children wanted to do the same job as you, what can they do to make it happen? Be full of humour, positive & inspiring What is the best piece of advice you ever received about your education or work? Remember....these are 'your kids' for just a short time. Do your best by them while they're yours. What is the best advice you could give to the children? Dream! To dream is to live. Pursue your dreams. Don't let anyone tell you can't have what you dream & strive for.
  • 4. Long Sutton Primary Careers Information Name Steve Russell What is your educational background? Higher Degree (MA / Doctorate) Job / Profession Education consultant What do you actually do in this job? Support schools with improving behaviour and wellbeing and developing leaders. Where do you work? In lots of different schools in Lincolnshire and other counties Where is the best or most amazing place you have worked? I've always enjoyed working in Long Sutton. To be honest I find so many schools great places to work What other jobs have you had? Shop assistant. Teacher. Special Needs co-ordinator. Behaviour support teacher. Senior school improvement consultant. What qualifications would the children need to get your job? A degree and then a teaching qualification plus some further qualifications in coaching and helping skills would be very helpful. If the children wanted to do the same job as you, what can they do to make it happen? Focus on their learning and develop good study skills. And develop what are called their people skills - listening to others & caring for them. What is the best piece of advice you ever received about your education or work? Listen to your heart and find out what it is you want to get up and do each day that will give you satisfaction.
  • 5. Long Sutton Primary Careers Information What is the best advice you could give to the children? Find out what you love learning about. Learning can sometimes seem to be a chore and hard work - but when you discover what really interests you that's when the learning journey becomes an amazing one.
  • 6. Long Sutton Primary Careers Information Name Jodie Lopez What is your educational background? GCSEs, A levels, Degree Job / Profession Head of Education What do you actually do in this job? Work with schools using software and help to engage customers and liaise with development teams to ensure new development matched customer need. Travel around UK visiting schools and running workshops etc. Also happy to talk about any of my former 33 jobs and how each and every single one has helped me progress through life even the ones that felt pointless at the time! Where do you work? Classroom Monitor Where is the best or most amazing place you have worked? Up a mountain skiing in France and Switzerland or by a lake in Italy What other jobs have you had? Where to begin...I have had 33 jobs ranging from babysitting to managing call centre teams. Door to door sales. Holiday rep, chalet host, resort manager. Bakery shop worker. Pizza maker. Teacher. Mystery shopper. And my degree was in Lighting Design so have worked in theatre, TV etc. What qualifications would the children need to get your job? I got this current job by being a teacher plus my previous experience in business and customer service. Many of my other jobs relied on nothing but hard work! If the children wanted to do the same job as you, what can they do to make it happen? Work hard and stay focused even when the goal seems far away. Plus be open to opportunity and willing to move countries with six days’ notice if necessary ;-)
  • 7. Long Sutton Primary Careers Information What is the best piece of advice you ever received about your education or work? I was once told that I have a vision plus I know all the tiny steps to get me there and that is why I succeeded. What is the best advice you could give to the children? Do every job to your best ability even if it seems pointless. You never know what your boss's next job might be or who you might meet on the way to help you to the next level. I used to be a customer of my current employer. You just never know when the opportunity will arise. Is there another job that you wish you had done at some time? I think I did enough :-)
  • 8. Long Sutton Primary Careers Information Name Oliver Quinlan What is your educational background? GCSEs, A levels, Degree, Higher Degree (MA / Doctorate) Job / Profession Job Title: Programme Manager (So many people have job titles these days that don't say much about what they actually do) What do you actually do in this job? I work with schools, entrepreneurs, researchers and government trying to find the best ways of using technology in schools. Practically that means lots of talking to people about what we know about technology and learning, presenting and speaking at conferences, trying to persuade people to try new things, and visiting schools and seeing what teachers and pupils are doing with technology. I spend quite a lot of time reading interesting things, and lots of time thinking and working out ideas about how technology changes learning. I'm learning myself all the time, which I like. Sometimes I spend a lot of time in offices in meetings and reading and replying to emails. Most people these days do a lot of this, but this is the boring stuff so I try to do it as efficiently as possible. I get to travel around quite a lot. Often this is to boring places like conference centres but these are always made more interesting by all the friends I have met through work who I often bump into and get to work with and catch up with. Sometimes it is to interesting places like the frozen North of Finland or a trip next month to New York. Where do you work? Based in an office in central London, sometimes from home, often travelling to different places. Where is the best or most amazing place you have worked? Probably the Arctic Circle in Finland a few years ago on a study visit to learn about Finnish schools (and learn some Skiing!). What other jobs have you had? When I finished University I spend some time working in music and radio. I was in an electronic music band, worked in studios, and ran club nights and DJed. I supported a few big bands and DJs including Example, Foals and Pendulum.
  • 9. Long Sutton Primary Careers Information This is exciting, but it doesn't pay much in the early days, so I used to also work in schools helping with technology and ICT. I enjoyed helping people learn so I trained to be a teacher. I then worked as a primary school teacher for a few years, then was offered the opportunity of working in a University teaching people to become teachers. There I got interested in research and how governments make education systems work. I moved to my current job partly because it was a chance to work more on research, but also because I wanted to spend some time living in London. What qualifications would the children need to get your job? A degree. I also have a Masters degree. When I'm talking to people about that it is less about proving that I got it like earlier qualifications, and more about sharing what I have learned from studying it. At school it can seem like you 'must have' certain qualifications as if they are on a tick list. However, when you get into many jobs so long as you have the basics its more about being able to talk about what you have learned. Thinking about what you are learning and how you are developing is important when studying, not just aiming to get it all finished and out of the way. When you have a job interview your qualifications are just the start to a conversation. If the children wanted to do the same job as you, what can they do to make it happen? If you were aiming for the job I do now at the start, you wouldn't start by doing what I have done. To get here quickly you'd be best off studying for a Masters degree, applying for internships with charities, and then applying for jobs as a researcher or a project manager. It's not always about getting one place quickly though. I never planned to do what I'm doing now, but I did always plan to do things that were interesting and fun to me and do some good. What is the best piece of advice you ever received about your education or work? I once worked with someone who had been a priest, a software engineer, a teacher and become a Head Teacher all before he was 40. He advised me to keep following what is interesting and fun and not worry about career rules other people tell you too much. You have to think about 'the way things work' a bit, but only enough to understand it and use it to your advantage. Breaking the rules causes you trouble, but building on top of them with all your own ideas about what you want to do and how you want to do it is good. What is the best advice you could give to the children? Rather than asking what you want to do when you grow up, ask what kind of life you want to have. Then figure out what you can do that fits in with that, or that makes it happen.

I have neither, though I did get an 'A' Level equivalent computer programming qualification which got me my start. I always had the sense from others with degrees that they had an easier time starting their careers. If the children wanted to do the same job as you, what can they do to make it happen? My job is quite specific and requires business knowledge - university can teach you some of this, but a lot of it is learned over time once you have a job. Technical skills normally come first when you get into IT, so If you love the idea of coding or making websites / apps, just do it! It is hard at first but a lot of fun when you 'get it'. It will be much easier to get a job if you have a genuine passion for something, which is better than any qualification. What is the best piece of advice you ever received about your education or work? This was at a Stags Supporters Club Christmas party...! The chap's Name was Steve. Unsure of his surname. I laughed at his dancing and he thought I was too serious, that I should relax. We talked about our work, he listened and then said "use it as your University." It always stayed with me, and I did exactly that. It paid off. What is the best advice you could give to the children? Do what you love. To be good at something, and to enjoy it, it is much easier if whatever it is gives you a 'buzz'. Is there another job that you wish you had done at some time? Artificial Intelligence programmer for computer games, or astronomer, still fascinated by space.

  • 70. Long Sutton Primary Careers Information Name SN What is your educational background? GCSEs, A levels, In-work qualifications, Degree Job / Profession HMRC Criminal Investigator What do you actually do in this job? Essentially the job is the police wing of HM Revenue & Customs; we have similar powers to the police including the power of arrest. Much of the work we do is plain clothes & targets organised crime gangs involved in smuggling of counterfeit tobacco, cigarettes & alcohol. These same gangs are often involved in people trafficking and we will work jointly with police & immigration. Another aspect of our work is targeting the retail end of smuggling operations & will involve raiding shops & residential premises. Finally we also work in combating Tax Evasion and Tax Fraud, these are mostly white collar criminals who can make millions of £ by cheating the tax payer. Where do you work? Nationwide Where is the best or most amazing place you have worked? The cutters, small fast boats designed to intercept smugglers. What other jobs have you had? When I first left school I worked as a coal miner. Although the job was physically very hard and very dirty, I really loved the job. I did very badly at school I'm afraid (I was quite lazy) and when the mines all closed I had no qualifications. With a friend we pooled our redundancy money to set up a security business, we were both pretty poor businessmen & our business failed & we lost all our money. I had to get some proper qualifications to get back in to job market. So I went back to college, then went on to University. While I was studying I worked in a knitwear factory in Sutton in Ashfield for 3 years, it was a bit boring packing tights into boxes all night, but the people who worked there were good fun to work with and it paid the bills. After working in the factory I finished my studies & went to work at the Inland Revenue (HMRC) as an auditor before moving into Criminal Investigations about 5 years ago.
  • 71. Long Sutton Primary Careers Information What qualifications would the children need to get your job? HMRC and the Civil Service in general don't always expect new recruits to have qualifications, depending on the role that you are applying for. Although the Civil Service is under a lot of financial pressure with cuts, it is still a good sector to work in. They are a reasonably good employer and if you can get into any Government Department, there are still lots of opportunities to gain additional qualifications in post. The Civil Service also operate a policy of recruiting internally across departments, so there is nothing to stop you going for a complete change of career, if you find you are getting bored or stale in a role. If the children wanted to do the same job as you, what can they do to make it happen? Civil Service still recruit young people at entry level, they can often be found at jobs fairs and there guidance on recruitment can be found on www.gov.uk/government/organisations/civil-service/about/recruitment What is the best piece of advice you ever received about your education or work? To be perfectly honest, good advice was in short supply when I was growing up. Where we lived it was assumed you would leave school at 16 and go straight into mining. Because the jobs were well paid & plentiful I don't think our parents ever pushed us to do anything different. What is the best advice you could give to the children? However boring a subject might seem at school, never underestimate the value of knowledge, stuff that seems totally irrelevant now could be crucial in 10 years. If you don't get the result you'd hoped for at school, it's not the end of the world; education is something you can continue to gain for the rest of your life. Finally don't be afraid to go for it, if you have a career in mind that you know you want to do, you may not be able to take the direct route, but go for it anyway. Is there another job that you wish you had done at some time? I wanted to be a teacher when I left the mines. Ending up in the Civil Service was a happy accident. When I get too old to chase smugglers, I will try to get into teaching again.
