helping skills would be very helpful.

Find out what you love learning about. Learning can sometimes seem to be a chore and hard

Where to begin...I have had 33 jobs ranging from babysitting to managing call centre teams.

Teacher. Mystery shopper. And my degree was in Lighting Design so have worked in theatre,
TV etc.
I got this current job by being a teacher plus my previous experience in business and customer
service. Many of my other jobs relied on nothing but hard work!
Work hard and stay focused even when the goal seems far away. Plus be open to opportunity
and willing to move countries with six days’ notice if necessary ;-)

I was once told that I have a vision plus I know all the tiny steps to get me there and that is why I
succeeded.
Do every job to your best ability even if it seems pointless. You never know what your boss's
next job might be or who you might meet on the way to help you to the next level. I used to be a
customer of my current employer. You just never know when the opportunity will arise.

Job Title: Programme Manager (So many people have job titles these days that don't say much
about what they actually do)
I work with schools, entrepreneurs, researchers and government trying to find the best ways of
using technology in schools. Practically that means lots of talking to people about what we know
about technology and learning, presenting and speaking at conferences, trying to persuade
people to try new things, and visiting schools and seeing what teachers and pupils are doing
with technology. I spend quite a lot of time reading interesting things, and lots of time thinking
and working out ideas about how technology changes learning. I'm learning myself all the time,
which I like.
Sometimes I spend a lot of time in offices in meetings and reading and replying to emails. Most
people these days do a lot of this, but this is the boring stuff so I try to do it as efficiently as
possible.
I get to travel around quite a lot. Often this is to boring places like conference centres but these
are always made more interesting by all the friends I have met through work who I often bump
into and get to work with and catch up with. Sometimes it is to interesting places like the frozen
North of Finland or a trip next month to New York.
Where do you work?
Based in an office in central London, sometimes from home, often travelling to different places.
Probably the Arctic Circle in Finland a few years ago on a study visit to learn about Finnish
schools (and learn some Skiing!).
When I finished University I spend some time working in music and radio. I was in an electronic
music band, worked in studios, and ran club nights and DJed. I supported a few big bands and
DJs including Example, Foals and Pendulum.

This is exciting, but it doesn't pay much in the early days, so I used to also work in schools
helping with technology and ICT. I enjoyed helping people learn so I trained to be a teacher. I
then worked as a primary school teacher for a few years, then was offered the opportunity of
working in a University teaching people to become teachers. There I got interested in research
and how governments make education systems work.
I moved to my current job partly because it was a chance to work more on research, but also
because I wanted to spend some time living in London.
A degree. I also have a Masters degree. When I'm talking to people about that it is less about
proving that I got it like earlier qualifications, and more about sharing what I have learned from
studying it. At school it can seem like you 'must have' certain qualifications as if they are on a
tick list. However, when you get into many jobs so long as you have the basics its more about
being able to talk about what you have learned. Thinking about what you are learning and how
you are developing is important when studying, not just aiming to get it all finished and out of the
way. When you have a job interview your qualifications are just the start to a conversation.
If you were aiming for the job I do now at the start, you wouldn't start by doing what I have done.
To get here quickly you'd be best off studying for a Masters degree, applying for internships with
charities, and then applying for jobs as a researcher or a project manager.
It's not always about getting one place quickly though. I never planned to do what I'm doing
now, but I did always plan to do things that were interesting and fun to me and do some good.

I once worked with someone who had been a priest, a software engineer, a teacher and
become a Head Teacher all before he was 40. He advised me to keep following what is
interesting and fun and not worry about career rules other people tell you too much. You have to
think about 'the way things work' a bit, but only enough to understand it and use it to your
advantage. Breaking the rules causes you trouble, but building on top of them with all your own
ideas about what you want to do and how you want to do it is good.
Rather than asking what you want to do when you grow up, ask what kind of life you want to
have. Then figure out what you can do that fits in with that, or that makes it happen.

I don't think there's any point wishing. If you want to do it, aim to do so some time. You don't
have to choose one job for life.

I work for a big company (Unilever - they make marmite, Ben and jerry's ice cream and dove
stuff as well as lots of other things). When there is a project (like the launch of a new ice cream)
lots of people work together to make sure everyone knows about it. Adverts, designing the tub,
labels, magazine articles, taste tests etc. I make sure they don't spend too much money!

I went to a conference in America once
I worked in an IT department at university, helping people fix their broken computers, I was a
trainee accountant (checking money) for a company who find jobs for people, I was a trainee
accountant for an accountancy firm (they look after the money if lots of companies.
Now, you can train to be an accountant after GCSEs if you work for a local company, or if you
get very good A levels you can get an apprenticeship with a big firm who will pay for your part
time university course too.
Practise maths! And using spreadsheets!

Always chose the things you love, not the things you think you should chose.

I have an office base in Nottingham but I travel across the country.
The best and most amazing place to work has always been with children and young people
themselves - they are truly inspirational. I also find The Houses of Parliament amazing but scary
too!
I have always worked with and for children who face many disadvantages or feel excluded and
isolated - whether they are runaways, been sexually exploited, bullied or abused.
They would need a mixture of qualifications and experience but most importantly passion and
the feeling of wanting to make a difference.
Alongside doing your best at school, think about volunteering or participating in and contributing
to your local community. Maybe think about others less fortunate than you or be part of a local
campaign.

Have influence through respect not power or position. So you don't have to be the top boss or
have the most money to make the biggest influence.

the way you wish to be treated.

I spent 24 year in the Royal Air Force. I was fortunate enough to serve all around the world in a
number of interesting jobs. In one year I spent a month in Norway then 3 months in Oman. I
was in the Middle East on 11 September 2001, the day the world changed.
Normally you would need a degree then a post-graduate qualification or you could study for a
degree in education.
I am lucky, I was able to join a scheme offering teacher training to service leavers who could
train to be teachers in schools whilst studying for their degree.
Work hard and try! I didn't really try at school as I had an idea of what I wanted to do (join the
RAF) - however I found when I left that employers wanted me to have certain qualifications just
to get an interview. I lost count of the jobs I couldn't apply for because I didn't have the right
pieces of paper!

It's not too late to so something new. I started studying to be a teacher when I was 42!
You might not know now what you want to be - don't worry about that! Work hard and give
yourself the best chance you can in the future.

You may end up in a completely different area of than you were planning - don't rule anything
out too soon. Be confident that you can learn new skills when you need to.

I work with organisations to help them put IT systems into place, which help them to manage
their relationships, usually with their customers, or to find new ones, using marketing methods,
and to manage their relationships with their existing customers via various sales processes.
But for some organisations it might not be about customers at all, it might be about ensuring that
they can find experts in a particular field of science, so that they can work together to study how
diseases emerge and spread in the population.
My role is to understand how organisations do things, so that information systems can be built
to make their work easier.
Where do you work?
Depends on the role, but at home or my own office at present, in London
Stockholm in Sweden.
I was a labourer for my dad, who was a builder before he retired, when I was a teenager, in the
summer holidays for a few years. He was trying to make me want to become a builder like him,
but I said no - I'd already decided I wanted to make computer software.
My first proper job was writing computer software, on huge mainframe systems for Experian in
Nottingham. It did not fulfil my dreams of writing the artificial intelligence for computer games...
so I left!
I then did some GIS Data Capture for East Midlands Electricity.
I then worked as an IT Manager and in this role I learned a lot about how businesses use

Information Systems.
I then left for London to work for a business software company, where I began to specialise in
my current area of expertise.
I would recommend at least up to 'A' Level, and it would be easier with a degree. I have neither,
though I did get an 'A' Level equivalent computer programming qualification which got me my
start. I always had the sense from others with degrees that they had an easier time starting
their careers.
My job is quite specific and requires business knowledge - university can teach you some of
this, but a lot of it is learned over time once you have a job.

I work in the production of red meat, beef and lamb. In order to produce this vital, healthy and
sustainable product we need to graze the animals on grasses and look after them through the
winter months when the grass stops growing. I work on a farm that is approx. 1000 acres, that's
around 500 football pitches in size. I work outside for most of the time though IT plays an
increasingly large role in our work. We already have EID systems for the sheep and we are
working towards EID systems for the cattle. We also have the added benefit of working in the
countryside, lots of fresh air and a huge variety of everyday jobs. I can honestly say that no two
days are the same. We sell the young cattle at around 10 months of age and the lambs are
sold at around 9 months of age. Oh, and you also get to drive some really big tractors!

Essentially the job is the police wing of HM Revenue & Customs; we have similar powers to the
police including the power of arrest. Much of the work we do is plain clothes & targets organised
crime gangs involved in smuggling of counterfeit tobacco, cigarettes & alcohol. These same
gangs are often involved in people trafficking and we will work jointly with police & immigration.
Another aspect of our work is targeting the retail end of smuggling operations & will involve

When I first left school I worked as a coal miner. Although the job was physically very hard and
very dirty, I really loved the job.
I did very badly at school I'm afraid (I was quite lazy) and when the mines all closed I had no
qualifications. With a friend we pooled our redundancy money to set up a security business, we
were both pretty poor businessmen & our business failed & we lost all our money.
I had to get some proper qualifications to get back in to job market. So I went back to college,
then went on to University. While I was studying I worked in a knitwear factory in Sutton in
Ashfield for 3 years, it was a bit boring packing tights into boxes all night, but the people who
worked there were good fun to work with and it paid the bills.
After working in the factory I finished my studies & went to work at the Inland Revenue (HMRC)
as an auditor before moving into Criminal Investigations about 5 years ago.

HMRC and the Civil Service in general don't always expect new recruits to have qualifications,
depending on the role that you are applying for.
Although the Civil Service is under a lot of financial pressure with cuts, it is still a good sector to
work in. They are a reasonably good employer and if you can get into any Government
Department, there are still lots of opportunities to gain additional qualifications in post. The Civil
Service also operate a policy of recruiting internally across departments, so there is nothing to
stop you going for a complete change of career, if you find you are getting bored or stale in a
role.

To be perfectly honest, good advice was in short supply when I was growing up. Where we lived
it was assumed you would leave school at 16 and go straight into mining. Because the jobs
were well paid & plentiful I don't think our parents ever pushed us to do anything different.
However boring a subject might seem at school, never underestimate the value of knowledge,
stuff that seems totally irrelevant now could be crucial in 10 years.
If you don't get the result you'd hoped for at school, it's not the end of the world; education is
something you can continue to gain for the rest of your life.
Finally don't be afraid to go for it, if you have a career in mind that you know you want to do, you
may not be able to take the direct route, but go for it anyway.
I wanted to be a teacher when I left the mines. Ending up in the Civil Service was a happy
accident. When I get too old to chase smugglers, I will try to get into teaching again.

careers. I was going to be an engineer, and got a place to study it at university. After I sat my

Nearly every school I work in! Schools are amazing places.
I've only every worked in libraries. I did work experience in a library in Exeter when I was 16.
The Manager then asked if I would like a Saturday job! I worked in the Children's library on
Saturdays and in the school holidays whilst doing my A levels. I was also lucky to be able to
come back from Newcastle and work in the holidays whilst doing my degree. My first
professional post was in a public library in Torquay.
A degree in librarianship (except now it would be called Information science or knowledge
management!) and some experience of working In-educational settings. Our professional body
is called CILIP http://www.cilip.org.uk
Be persistent about looking for work experience. Visit your local library and ask for the Name of

the person to whom you should write to ask for a work experience placement. That way your
request should get to the right person. In the meantime many public libraries enlist the help of
young people to help promote their service to other young people. So for example the summer

As a manager "Never ask somebody to do something you are not prepared to do yourself" and
from my tutor at University "Never say never". I still keep this as my mantra. Sometimes in a
working environment you can feel as if your good ideas are being blocked but there is usually a
way round it, you just have to be creative and politely persistent!
Have a go! Try any opportunities that come your way. If you think you have found a career you
might be interested in then find out as much about it as you can. At secondary school if you
don't have a clear idea of what you might want to do later on then keep your options open by
having a range of subjects e.g. Humanities and sciences. Be curious in life and ask questions,
it's amazing what you learn!
Not really, I love my job and find it very rewarding. Back at school though I did want to be a
pathologist!

I draw and write picture books and comics. I spend about 30% of my time actually drawing and
writing, and about 70% working to promote the books, answering e-mails, giving interviews and
dealing with travel and travel-related details.
Where do you work?
In an old police station in southeast London. We even have jail cells, and we joke that we put
our clients in there if they won't pay.
Probably here! But I also worked at The Moscow Times newspaper office in Russia.

To make books, you need to be able to... make books! You don't need any qualifications, but
you need to be very good at it, and know how to seek out the training you need to get good. You
can't sit back and wait for people to teach you, you need to find out what you need and wriggle
your way forward as best you can.
