New Doha International Airport-
Bus and Taxi Pavilions
Doha, Qatar

2008-09
HOK provided architecture, MEP, and other
services for a new passenger terminal complex
for Qatar, adjacent to the Arabian Gulf. The new
airport is expected to handle 48 million
passengers a year. The project includes three
concourses, a 3,100 space parking garage and
adjacent ground transportation facilities for bus
and taxi passengers.
I served as Project Architect the Bus and Taxi
Pavilions (total 2000 m2) and one of three
concourses. I also assisted in consultant
coordination and construction documents for the
Parking Garage. My responsibilities included
regular consultation with the project designer,
engineering consultants, design/build contractors
and architectural teams for other component
buildings in the project.

Wellness Center

The Wellness Center at the College of San
Mateo is a $30 million, 90,000 s.f. building with
classrooms and labs for the Nursing, Dental and
Cosmetology Departments plus facilities for the
Fitness program. The Wellness Center serves as
a campus gateway building and gives the
campus a new, modern identity for the college,
and will achieve a LEED Silver rating.
I was Project Architect with responsibilities for
design development, interaction with user-
groups, programming, construction documents,
consultant coordination and documentation for
LEED certification.

Having received Division of the State Architect
(DSA) approval in October, 2008, the Wellness
Center is under construction with completion
expected in the spring of 2010.

Condominiums
Walnut Creek, CA

2006
Kwan Henmi was the design architect for a four
story, 91-unit condominium project in a transit
oriented development area of Walnut Creek. The
project includes both standard one-, two-, and
three-bedroom units and live work units facing
Ygnacio Valley Road, with a landscaped
courtyard over a two level, 131-space parking
garage.
My responsibilities during the design
development phase included developing design
details, fine-tuning of unit plans, coordinating
with engineers and landscape architects,
ensuring code compliance, and regular
consultation with the developer, Levin Menzies &
Associates. I also met frequently with the Walnut
Creek Planning Department staff and
commissioners for planning approval process.
After Planning approval was achieved, a different
architectural firm produced the construction
documents for the project which is now under
construction.

1160 Mission Street
“Soma Grand” Condominiums
San Francisco, CA

Soma Grand is a condominium project
consisting of 246 studio, one and two bedroom
market rate units in a twenty-two story tower on
top of a 364 space parking structure with 5,200
square feet of ground-floor retail. The fifth level
podium provides common residential amenities
including gardens, clubhouse, spa, and soaking
pool.
Kwan Henmi Architecture and Planning
collaborated with Architecture
International as the architects of record on the
project. Kwan Henmi provided architectural
documentation and construction administration
services, as well as interior architectural design
services.
I served as Project Architect during the
construction administration phase, with
responsibilities for documentation, contractor
and client communication, review of submittals,
regular job-site reviews, and project close-out.

Davidson Middle School
Modernization
San Rafael, CA
Gelfand Partners Architects
2003-06
Davidson Middle School was one of several
schools built in the 1950’s that were modernized
using school modernization bonds. The project
scope included a new Administration Building,
renovation and additions to the Gymnasium,
modernization of 20 classrooms, and site
improvements. Gelfand Partners also designed a
new Multi-Purpose Building for the campus,
which was deleted from the project due to budget
constraints.
I was Project Architect for this project and was
responsible for design and documentation,
evaluation of existing facilities, estimate review,
client and consultant communication, Division of
Site Plan with New Construction the State Architect (DSA) approvals and
construction administration.

Barbara Scavullo Design
2001-02
Barbara Scavullo Design provided interior design
services for a new 10,000 s.f. custom residence
designed by Karin Payson Architecture +
Design. The design responds to the clients’ wish
for a level of detail and solidity typical of
traditional residential architecture with the clean
lines and simplicity of modern design.
I worked with the interior designer to develop
custom architectural construction details for
doors, stairs, paneling, casework, etc. I was also
responsible for coordination of the design with
the building architect and engineers, and
supervised drafters in construction document
production.
The project was featured in the San Francisco
Chronicle Magazine, May 8, 2005.

Huntington Hotel

The project included extensive structural and
building shell modifications to incorporate a new
spa, including a small swimming pool, elevators,
communicating stairs, new exterior walls and a
terrace.
As a member of the project team I was
responsible for design and detail development,
construction documentation and coordination
with consultants.
The project was featured in an article in
Metropolis magazine in April 2003.

Alamo Plaza

1997-98
An existing “big box” retail shell building was
renovated to provide several smaller tenant
spaces with a large anchor tenant. The client’s
goal was to improve the image of the building
with façade features and a new covered arcade

As project architect, my responsibilities included
design, construction documentation, consultant
coordination and construction administration. I
also was project architect for the tenant
improvement for the anchor tenant, Office Max.
