2. Squanto was born in
a Native American
Village near
Plymouth,
Massachusetts
This was where the
Pilgrims would land
years later
3. As a young boy
Squanto was
kidnapped by the
English to be sold
as a slave.
They took him to
Spain to be sold
into slavery for
about twenty
dollars
4. Squanto escaped from
the people that
captured him, and he
started to try to find a
way back home across
the Atlantic Ocean.
5. It was not easy!
It was a long way home, Squanto had no friends
and barely knew English
6. But he had to
go home to
his family
and his
people.
He had to
find a way…
7. How did Squanto make it home?
• He started to work for a ship maker
• The ship maker taught him a lot of English
• He was hired to help the ship maker speak to the Indians on his
voyage to America.
SQUANTO WAS GOING HOME!
8.
9. Squanto had returned home
Unfortunately, all of his people in his village and
his family had died from a sickness the English had
brought with them.
10. Squanto was sad but
decided to help the
English get along with
the Natives, since he
now knew English and
could speak to the
Indians for the English
11. In 1621, the Pilgrims were starving because they didn’t
know how to grow food or hunt animals.
12. Squanto came to them
and helped them learn
the way to tend the
land and to hunt and
fish.
He encouraged the
Indian tribes to help
the Pilgrims survive.
13. When a little Pilgrim
boy went missing in
the woods, Squanto
helped the Pilgrims
find him safe and
sound
14. The Pilgrims had the
first Thanksgiving with
Squanto and the other
Indians as a way to say
thank you for all of
their help
15. Even though Squanto had been treated badly by the English,
he still helped them when they needed it.
16. Squanto was a brave and kind man who
forgave the people that hurt him and his
people.
17. We still give thanks for
all the help the
Pilgrims got from
Squanto and the other
Indians. The holiday of
Thanksgiving is
celebrating that first
feast so long ago.
