H I S T O R Y
The oldest mosaic, comprised of stone, seashells, and ivory, has been traced back to a Mesopotamian temple that existed during the third millennium
B.C. In ancient Greece, artists used small pebbles to make mosaics before elevating the art into more complex patterns. Churches and palaces dating
from antiquity adorned with detailed, colorful mosaics can be found throughout the former Roman Empire.
This medium, rooted in tradition, continues to be a sought after design choice. Technological advances, like waterjet cutting, allows for a diverse array
of designs and applications.

What is Waterjet?
Waterjet is a type of mosaic pattern available at Artistic Tile. The 60,000 psi cutting head
of a waterjet machine can cut intricate and curvilinear shapes in stone, porcelain, and
glass, yielding tightly nested parts. In 2010, we added Waterjet Cutting technology to our
Secaucus, New Jersey production facility.
How does it differ from a Mosaic?
Waterjet is a type of mosaic that offers more complex patterns and forms compared to
traditional mosaics.
What is the Tailored To program?
Artistic Tile’s on-site Tailored To program allows natural stone, glass, and porcelain to be
cut and assembled into hundreds of mosaic patterns and almost fifty field tile sizes. Clients
have the flexibility to mix materials, colors, and textures. Our in-house capabilities mean
that customers can highly customize our existing products or create something entirely
new that expands beyond our selection of stocked items.
