If determined you truly do
need to hire…
You need to start off,
with the right job description
Define the description with:
• General Description and Primary Job Functions
• Required skills
– “Must have” on top
– “Should have” in the middle
– “Nice to have” at the bottom
• Desired skills you wish they had, but not mandatory
• Experience and years doing this type of work
• Education needed or desired
After creating the description,
you need to find the person…
Here’s where you can look:
• Online (monster.com)
• Company website
• Newspaper ad
• Recruiter / headhunter
• Word of mouth
• College or trade school bulletin board
• Employment agency
• Radio or TV
• Temp agency
What do you look for,
in an interviewee?
Natural Talent
Apptitude and Attitude
is just as important as experience
Integrity & Honesty
with a strong work ethic…
Nice personality
You can train a nice person to become skilled…
But you can’t train a skilled
person to become nice
Length at previous job
If they bounce around a lot,
they might leave your company early as well...
Over qualified
Will they leave the moment something better
comes along?
True knowledge &
experience
People lie on their resumes, most of the time…
Comfortable eye contact
Nervous mannerisms could show they have
something to hide
Articulates clearly
and speaks well
Their apperance
A dirty look can say a lot about their personality
Team attitude
A person who will go the extra mile is gold…
What questions should
you ask?

Potential Conflict 1
Ask, “ Who was their favorite manager and why?”
Then ask the conflicting question:
“ Who was their least favorite manager and why?”
The answer can tell you how well they deal with structure
Potential Conflict 2
What did they like the most about their last job?
What did they like the least about their last job?
The answers can tell you whether the person is
enthusiastic or a troublemaker
Can they multitask?
and work well under pressure?
What are their greatest
strengths,
and their greatest weaknesses
These questions can tell you a lot about the
person
What questions should
you not ask?

• Ethnicity
• Gender
• Religion
• Age
• Health
• Disabilities
• National origin

– Professional, for employment verification for possible
problems
– Personal, for integrity verification
• Determine rate of pay
Start off on a positive note
• Gladly welcome the employee
• Go over company and department goals and
objectives
• Give clear expectations right from the get go!!!
