Obesity and Nutrition
The main idea of our project is to bring
awareness to obesity and how to
prevent it. Nutrition is a major aspect
when it comes to obesity.
What is obesity?
Excessive body weight.
People who are obese normally find it
harder to move around.
There is one fact that people need to
realize about obesity….
It is preventable!!!
Preventing Obesity
60 or more minutes of activity each day
Eating a “colorful” diet
Well balanced, including each food
group in moderation
Increase exercise
Improve sleep habits
Try to reduce stress
What We Did
● Teach students what a healthy lifestyle is
Make snack books that are fun, easy and
healthy
Show children fun activities that promote
exercise
MyPlate activity
Teaching the importance to stay healthy and
active
My Plate
Allows people to see what they are eating
Shows you what you eat too much of and too
little of
Allows you set goals for what you eat
Lets you track your physical activity
Allows you to make healthy changes in your
diet
Serving Sizes
Serving Size- A measured amount
of food or drink.
Portion- The amount of food that
you choose to eat for a meal or
snack.
Food portions have greatly
increased over the years so it’s
easy to consume too much of a
certain food group.
Required/Suggested Portions:
Grains- 6 oz.
Vegetables- 2.5 oz.
Meat- 5.5 oz.
Fruit- 2 cups
Milk and Dairy- 3 cups
Avoid consuming too much of these food
groups through juice
Fruit and Veggie juices are actually
much less health because they contain
relatively high amounts of sugar
Effects of Obesity
Obesity has a far-ranging negative effect on
health. Each year obesity-related conditions
cost over 150 billion dollars and cause an
estimated 300,000 premature deaths in the
US. The health effects associated with obesity
include, but are not limited to, the following:
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Heart disease
Joint problems, including osteoarthritis
Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
Cancer
Metabolic syndrome
Psychosocial effects
