   The Father of American Education
   Developed progressive education and
    incorporated democratic practices in the
    educational process
   Progressive Education is the education of a
    child mentally, physically, and emotionally
   Advocated an AFT Union made exclusively
    of, for, and by teachers
   Believed learning was student directed with a
    teacher serving as a guide
   One of the most influential and controversial
    teachers of the 20th Century
   Founder of Constructivism
   Known particularly for his developmental theory
   which consists of four stages (sensori-motor, pre-
    operational, concrete operational, and formal
    operational)
   beliefs on constructivism stem from his study of the way
    that infants, children, and adolescents develop cognitively
   believed that children can accept ideas that later they
    may reject and that these ideas are understood through
    active learning and involvement
   stated that for an individual to be capable of creativity
    and production, one must learn through construction and
    reconstruction
   Knowledge is always changing and
    developing; it is not fixed.
   Learning is centered around and driven by
    students, not teachers.
   Students are encouraged to use creativity
    and innovation in the classroom.
   Teachers are seen as facilitators of
    learning, not leaders of the classroom.
   The goal is for students to use their prior
    knowledge and new knowledge to form
    new and advanced opinions and ideas.
 Teachers are seen as a guide and
  resource to the student
 The teacher is a facilitator of learning
 The facilitator is responsible for creating
  an environment that enables maximum
  creativity
 Facilitators encourage group work and
  roles within that group
   The student is viewed as an individual
    learner
   Each student has individual needs
    and pasts
   Individuality and creativity is
    encouraged and rewarded
   Students are encouraged to find their own
    version of the truth, this is influenced by their
    unique backgrounds
   Students are the primary resource for their
    learning
   In my teaching, I would encourage
    group work and creativity as the theory
    states. However, I believe students need
    more than guidance in the classroom. I
    think the role of a “teacher” is more
    effective than that of a “facilitator”.
