THE PURPOSE OF THIS DESIGN IS TO ENGAGE CUSTOMERS TO EMBARK ON THE JOURNEY WITH MURASAKI AND SHARE
IN THE CUISINE EXPERIENCE. THE SIMPLISTIC FONT LENDS TO A MORE MODERN FEEL RATHER THAN A FOCUS ON THE
TRADITIONAL JAPANESE CULTURE.
THE RISING SUN IMAGE IN THE BACKGROUND BRINGS IN THE FEEL OF THE JAPANESE TRADITION. THE IMAGE CAN
ALSO REFLECT THE OUTLINE OF SASHIMI RELATING TO THE CUISINE, FINDING A UNIQUE DUAL MEANING.

6. As human beings it is inevitable that at some point in
our lives we will develop feelings of sadness, hopelessness and even depression. These emotions can
be brought on by something personal like losing a job, a
failed relationship, or a serious health issue for you or a
loved one; or sometimes they are triggered by something
more global like corrupt political systems, war, or the
knowledge that there are starving children all over the
world.
Regardless, we are just people and no matter how hard
we may try to mitigate negative emotions, they persist.
The purpose of this article is NOT to explain to you how
detrimental these negative feelings are, but rather give
some practical tools for gaining perspective amid these
rough times. Living with perspective means always look-
ing at your life from the 10,000 foot level, and when you
entrain yourself to pull back and view yourself from this
height things begin to look a little different. More often
than not, they begin to look much better.
So HOW do we do it?Here are THREE effective practices for gaining perspective:
1. READ
Delving into a well-written bookcan really speak to your soul, and isan excellent practice to feeling lifefrom the vantage point of someoneelse. More specifically read a bookthat is told from the vantage point of an older person or
someone towards their end of his/her life. Ask yourself:
what would this older person who can barely walk and
do anything by herself do if she were placed in my body?
Begin acting as this person would if she had the ability to
switch bodies with you.
I recently finished Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
which was a partial narrative by a 93 year old man looking
back at his days in the circus during the Great Depression.
Although his time in the circus was marked with struggle
and fear he reflects on those days as the most memora-
ble of his life. Are YOU right here, right now, living those
days? Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom is another
wonderful tale that I highly recommend.
2. SEEK OUT AN OLDER GRANDPARENT,GREAT UNCLE OR SOMEONE YOU KNOWWHO IS 80+ YEARS AND INITIATE APURPOSE-FILLED CONVERSATION.Ask them about their most cherished memories and listen
to them as they talk of the past, when they were young
and vibrant and full of hope. Understand that they also
had feelings of fear, sadness and struggle (just like you
have), but get the sense that they would do anything togo back in time and re-live those mo-ments. Ask them if they would do thingsdifferently or exactly the same.
One of my biggest regrets is that I knewand remember all four of my grandpar-ents, but never had the good sense to ask
them
specifically about their lives. If you still have these people
around, seek them out; theyare your family and they loveyou. Theconversation will bebeneficial to them as well andgives them the opportunity toshare what they have learned, and they will appreciate yourasking!
3. VOLUNTEER
There are countless people allover the world who are in need ofassistance, and volunteering your time and en-
ergy enables you to perform a selfless act that simply
helps others. However, volunteering does not have to be
completely selfless; in fact I would argue that becoming a
volun teer is a wonderful way to gain perspective in your
own life (and not in the “oh, look how badly these people
have it and thank God I’m me” way).
Volunteering is unique in that it gives you a very pure
opportunity to connect with people that you may never
have met otherwise. I am always surprised by how much
I learn about myself through relationships I never would
have forged if I hadn’t volunteered my time. “Giving
back” reaps perspective.
FINAL THOUGHTSGaining perspective in your life is an important exercise
that you must purposefully develop. By reading good
books, speaking with older relatives, volunteering and
observing little kids you can start to get a more rounded
view of the world you are living. Asyou partake in these activities, entrain yourself to
start looking at your life outside the realm of your current
circumstances; see yourself as if 40 years from the future,
and 30 years from the past. We all have very real prob-
lems and situations to deal with; some are in our control
while others are not. The only thing that we really have
control of is our emotions when dealing with situations.
GAINING PERSPECTIVE IS A WONDERFUL TOOL FOR SUS-
TAINING A MEANINGFUL AND FULFILLING LIFE!
“COME AWAY FROM THIS
CONVERSATION WITH THEUNDERSTANDING THAT RIGHT NOWYOU ARE THE ONE LIVING THE LIFE YOUWILL SPEAK OF WHEN YOU ARE OLDER.”

8. SELFSELFSELF
DISCOVERING
SELF
EXPRESSIONThe kind of self-expression emphasized by Prometheanism does not justfollow the most general, inclusive, obvious and bland definition: ‘expressionof whatever self you are’, which clearly has little inspirational use as a goalor guide, in that it says nothing important. Some people, it should be noted, live their lives by nothing more than it, however, and may even enshrine it(as in the uncommunicative maxims: ‘be you’ or ‘be yourself’). No,Promethean self-expression means something more specific, but also some-thing more changeable in time, adaptable in context, and something appro-priate for each person. It also means something identifiable only by a givenperson. We cannot tell you what it means for you. A person might help an-other find out, but anyone who claims to know the essence of life for anoth-er lies, or fools themselves.
Self-expression does not merely refer to speech or other communication asin the most common use of the phrase. It means allowing thesignificance in one’s character and in what one does to show itself howeverit must according to individuality, and not merely removing obstacles in theway, but striving for it. For some, that expression is often well-described as creativity. The expression might involve the self-improvementof education. For some, it does have a lot to do with language, for us aswriters and philosophers, for example. However self-expression need notbe verbal or communicative at all, having as many vibrant forms as the fulldiversity of people, and as many shades as their moments and moods. Itmight sometimes be invisible to other people, occurring internally. For onewhose very identity and greatest purpose involves parenting, self-expression might be witnessed in comforting an infant; that might representconnecting with oneself, for a mother. For a businessman it might involvedoing business profitably, for a scholar it might involve acquiring learningand understanding, for a craftsman it might involve working with his handseffectively and getting the job done well. It does have to do with success asa process, but clearly success is different for different people atdifferent times.
Part of self-expression might involve asserting a purpose (for oneself) but we understandself-expression better if we understand it akin to a process, an expenditure, which if itwere a word would be a verb, and which might point to a noun we would call apurpose. We can call that purpose by a more conveniently descriptive name, our self-interest, which is to say the individualistic direction of one’s self-expression envisionedas a journey with both charting and traveling [1] — a journey of life-advancing, seekingour own advantage. Of such a journey we may feel sure that however lost we might be-come along the way, we travel a journey like no other adventure, expedition, trip, circuit, voyage, odyssey, wandering, pilgrimage, crusade, march, promenade, hike, quest, jaunt, venture or whatever kind of journey it might be like. We all must follow our ownway, and we both know and do not know where we want to goand how to travel there — and our
‘destination’ of our self-
interest only
beckons
as a goal;
we never
arrive.
This means
not only the
gifts of ca-
pability from
ourselves and
others, but
happiness and
satisfaction,
and feeling alive. Joseph Campbell called this “following your bliss” with good reason. Us-ing other words, Nietzsche talked of the most spiritual will-to-power, and of “sublimating”in the sense of making sublime or profound. Refining or distilling make apt metaphors aswell. Whatever the words, expressing oneself as one must/should — sublimating self-ex-pression — means taking the basis of any life in the widest possible sense, the self-ex-pression of anyone, and making it something precious and all-too-rare. That defines thePromethean understanding of self-expression.
We can
follow
whatever we
find
wonderful.
