A Sizzling supper
I
T WAS a chilly, blustery evening bang
smack in the middle of oncoming
summer.
Only the day before we had been salty
skinned and sandy toed, and yet last
Friday seemed to say: woah, don’t get
too comfortable – it’s only May. Calm down,
me hearties.
Rain poured down and the wind howled as
we changed into our gladrags. And what
better way to spend such an unexpected
evening than with your loved ones,
munching on a delicious three-course meal?
We swapped sunglasses for warm jackets
and drove round the west coast for a spot of
foodie indulgence.
Having never eaten at La Grande Mare, I’d
say I was a pretty good guinea pig for their
Summer Sizzler menu. I took my fiancé
David, my mum Min and her friend Celia
along for the ride and though it certainly
wasn’t sizzling outside, we were game.
We are a hard crowd to please. Not only do
we all enjoy cooking, but hunting out hidden
restaurant gems, sampling new-kids on the
ingredient block and attending cookery
classes are things we like to do for the hell of
it. What can we say? Food is the spice of life,
and we like ours hot and schmokin’.
What do you consider good value? It is a
hard question to answer, but at £12.50 for
three courses this menu is a bargain by
anyone’s standards. And the dishes were
well portioned and varied.
There was definitely a ‘beachy’ feel to the
brasserie dining area. With a spruced-up
fishing boat at the entrance, framed photos
of local beaches dotted around the walls
and neutral tones throughout, it was seaside
elegance with a twist. ‘Hurry up and get to
the good part’, I hear you say. Very well…
For starters, Min and David went for duck
liver parfait with red onion marmalade
and toasted brioche. The marmalade was
undeniably sweet and luscious on the palate.
Its vinegary twang balanced well with the
rich, smooth parfait, which surprised with
its complexity of flavour. The only criticism
from my other half came straight from the
mouth of Oliver Twist – ‘Please sir, I want
some more’.
Celia went all Greek and opted for an
asparagus, beetroot and feta salad on
seasonal greens. It was summer in a bowl.
Bright, light and healthy. The star of the
show? The beautifully uneven, crumbly
and creamy feta – beauty comes from
imperfection, from not trying to be a perfect
square.
A lover of all seafood, it was a crab and
prawn cocktail for me. This 70s classic
isn’t usually my go-to, but the addition of
avruga caviar on top intrigued me. The salty
freshness of the caviar, mixed with familiar
marie rose smoothness, made for a fine start
to the feast.
W
hen the mains arrived, it was a
picture.
And they smelled fantastic – always a
very good sign. With true perfect timing, the
sun also decided to make an appearance.
David’s mint and garlic marinated lamb
chops were better than we had expected.
Lamb’s a funny one. In restaurants it’s either
as good as my mum’s or overdone and not
French trimmed. This was the former. The
smooth mashed potato hidden underneath
the juicy chops was also a treat, as was the
glistening mint sauce generously poured
over the top. It was so good I kept going
back for sneaky mouthfuls. ‘It’s for work,’ I
insisted.
For Min, it was wild mushroom risotto with
basil oil. Heavy on the garlic, this dish was
indulgent and comforting. The rice was
cooked properly, unlike so many risottos –
creamily soft without being stodgy.
Celia, a curry enthusiast, went for chicken
jalfrezi. The dish was delicious, but needed
a chutney to set it off. And some quickly
arrived.
I, however, couldn’t resist the promise of a
buttery skate wing. You either admire the
stringy flesh of skate or you don’t, and I
do and did. New potatoes, steamed French
beans and a caper beurre blanc made the
dish sing and I quickly ascended into seafood
heaven. I could have stayed and eaten the
whole thing twice over. But there was a

birthday party to attend afterwards and a

Not that anyone
was thinking about
that when the puds
arrived.
F
or the finale,
Min and Celia
went for
lavender crème
caramel with
lavender shortbread.
Ideal for summer,
it was light and
different.
Mine was that
British staple we
all love and adore,
good ‘ole crumble. This one was filled with
grated apple, fresh blackberries and lashings
of sweet cinnamony
topping. A little jug
of fresh custard sat
steaming next to the
small dish and was
crying out to smother
the sugary goodness.
The strawberry and
white chocolate
cheesecake was
David’s poison. I have
never seen a dessert
disappear from
someone’s plate so fast.
Now, I know David likes
food, but you’d think
the man hadn’t eaten
for a year. ‘It was just
soooo good,’ he said.
I was quick enough to sneak a spoonful
from under his nose – it was smooth on the
tongue, almost parfait-like, and extremely
pretty to look at for the five seconds it
remained intact.
The afternoon’s rain had disappeared, blue
skies had returned and all seemed right with
the world again. We were left feeling full,
satisfied and ever so slightly sad that the
whole thing was over.
On the plus side, the Summer Sizzler menu
is available seven days a week until 30 June.
So get yourselves down there and give it a
try. I know I’ll be returning.
I can heartily recommend the asparagus,
beetroot and feta salad, the lamb chops and
strawberry and white chocolate cheesecake.
l The Summer Sizzler menus is available for
lunch between noon and 2pm, and for Early
Bird Dinner, 6-7pm, in the brasserie only at La
Grande Mare. Call 256576 to book.
