OBJECTIVE:
■ Define and differentiate explicit and
implicit information
WHAT’S THE
DIFFERENCE?
■Diary vs. Dairy
Diary- a book in which you
write down your personal
experiences and thoughts
each day.
Dairy- a farm that produces
■Except vs. Accept
Except- not including
Accept – to accept or
take
■deceased vs. diseased
Deceased- no longer
living Diseased – sickly,
unhealthy
■Implicit vs. Explicit
Let’s listen:
Guide questions:
1. Who are the characters in the story?
2. Who is considered a lazy creature?
3. What did the ant feel about grasshopper?
4. How would you compare the ant from the
grasshopper?
5. Why did the ant share his stored food to
the grasshopper?
Explicit
vs.
Implicit
Explicit Information
■ Explicit information is any idea that is stated.
■ With explicit information, you see the text
explained!
■ Since you are looking for explicit information in
what is read, the explicit information will be
written in the text.
■ There is no need to look for clues. Just read. If the
information is written, it is explicit.
Just like the answer in guide question 1 and 2.
Implicit Information
■ The definition of implicit is, “implied or
understood though not plainly or directly
expressed.” Something is, therefore,
implicit when it is not directly stated but
is either suggested in the wording or
necessary to effectuate the purpose.
Just like the answer for guide questions 3 to
5.
What’s the difference between
Explicit and Implicit?
■Explicit information is any idea
that is stated. While, implicit is,
“implied or understood though
not plainly or directly
expressed.”
Let’s do some exercise!
Amber wants to buy a new smart phone but
she doesn't have the money. Which question from
the list below would be considered explicit?
■ Why does she need a new phone?
■ Why can't Amber buy the smart phone?
■ How is Amber going to raise the money?
■ Where does she plan to buy the phone?
Wendy was walking home from school when
she found a sick bird lying on the ground under a
tree. She stopped and gave the bird a look. She
looked up and noticed a nest in the branch above
her. She looked forward and continued walking
home. What implicit information can you obtain
from this story?
■ Wendy loves animals.
■ Wendy is running late for an appointment.
■ Wendy is a selfish person.
■ Wendy needs to get home before dark.
■ Sam and his cousin walked to the store.
Sam bought a bag of chips while his cousin
bought a bottle of water. If I asked the
question, "What did Sam buy?" Would that
question be implicit or explicit?
Since it was getting late, the band decided
to go home and get some rest. The lead singer
decided he wanted to stay a little longer and
practice some of the new songs. What can be a
piece of implicit information in this story?
■ The band needed rest.
■ The lead singer has great dedication.
■ It was getting late.
■ The band has some new songs.
Application:
■ Define in your own words
Word My Own Definition…
Explicit
Implicit
True or False
1. Explicit information is written in the
text.
2. Implicit information is NOT written in
the text.
3. Implicit information is something I think
is happening.
4. Explicit information is something I know
is happening.
