such as climate change, food
security and the energy crisis reach
far beyond the boundaries of a
single discipline.
FACT
The need for interdisciplinary studies
to address the complex issues, too
broad to deal adequately by a single
discipline, is widely acknowledged in
literature.
(Stember 1991; Jahn et al. 2012; McLeish and Strang 2014 Power & Handley, 2017; Siraj & Al-Maskari, 2018)
SOLUTION
Concept of interdisciplinary
Interdisciplinary working has been recognised as a key contributor in solving complex
social problem (DIUS 2008; QAA 2012, BIS 2016, Siraj & Al-Maskari 2018).
• DC promotes design led approaches to problem solve / co-create (Feb 2018)
• The RAE - individuals who can work together in multidisciplinary teams are better equipped to deal with
complex challenges (RAE, 2012).
• Grant (2012) engineering and design graduates need to be exposed to stimulating environments that
promote entrepreneurial mind sets and cultures leading to novel ideas to expose creative flair but also
sustainable networks and connections to bring them into fruition.
• The Design Council advocates “design” as a means to addressing complex social issues and offers
multidisciplinary as a solution with “design” placed as the foundation of discipline integration (DC,
2015).
• The Academy of Management stressed the importance of expanding research and teaching interest
beyond business to support complex problem (1970)

What do we mean by “collaboration”?
• Cross disciplinary: viewing one discipline from another
• Multidisciplinary: same problem independent perspectives
• Interdisciplinary: integration of disciplines
• Transdisciplinary: problem specific integration
joint problem solving, science & society
Interdisciplinarity: Involves the combining of two or more
academic disciplines into one activity. It is creating something
new by crossing boundaries, and thinking between them.
Farmers on film project
Local business woman – Sarah Gayton wants to promote
Staffordshire food in the year of Olympics 2012. So
• Wrote a bid to get a small sum of money £3K
• Working with James Fair (Film Lecturer) we set a brief for 150 L4
(First year) film students.
• To produce a 3 minute film
Aim
To produce a high quality film to support and promote farming, food producers and tourism in
Staffordshire for the 2012 Olympics.
You will be involved with filming some or all of the following:
a. farmers and food producers
b. butchers, bakers
c. local pubs/hotels that make use of local produce
d. farmers markets
e. food festivals
g. Organisations such as Young Farmer meetings, National Farmers Union, Tourist office
• 4 to 5 in a team (approx. 150 students)
• Pitch of idea in wk4/5 to academics and farming reps
• Had to include – team roles, risk assessment, research on the topic, interview
questions, research on previous student films, timeline for production
• Feedback at pitch and possible contacts
• Internal showing of film in week 12
• Showing of all films at Stoke Your Fires Film Festival – invitation to all people
who were in the films and presentation by the Vice Chancellor to winning team

drawing our activity has allowed rehearsals to be captured

  • 1. 02/02/2020 1 International Week 2020 Interdisciplinary Challenge Led Learning Workshop Jan 2020 Prof Jon Fairburn & Prof Jess Power Welcome Started as a Geographer, then studied Geographic Information Systems. Prof Jon Fairburn Prof Jess Power Background in Creative Arts. Started as a Designer, then studied Technical Textiles. Worked in across various facilities including: Art and Design, Engineering, Business & Humanities – multiple projects RAE and DTI Worked in Geography Department – multiple EU projects working with engineers, health, business, law and film disciplines • Working with staff across disciplines • Working with University service staff • Working with students across disciplines Complex modern societal challenges such as climate change, food security and the energy crisis reach far beyond the boundaries of a single discipline. FACT The need for interdisciplinary studies to address the complex issues, too broad to deal adequately by a single discipline, is widely acknowledged in literature. (Stember 1991; Jahn et al. 2012; McLeish and Strang 2014 Power & Handley, 2017; Siraj & Al-Maskari, 2018) SOLUTION Concept of interdisciplinary Interdisciplinary working has been recognised as a key contributor in solving complex social problem (DIUS 2008; QAA 2012, BIS 2016, Siraj & Al-Maskari 2018). • DC promotes design led approaches to problem solve / co-create (Feb 2018) • The RAE - individuals who can work together in multidisciplinary teams are better equipped to deal with complex challenges (RAE, 2012). • Grant (2012) engineering and design graduates need to be exposed to stimulating environments that promote entrepreneurial mind sets and cultures leading to novel ideas to expose creative flair but also sustainable networks and connections to bring them into fruition. • The Design Council advocates “design” as a means to addressing complex social issues and offers multidisciplinary as a solution with “design” placed as the foundation of discipline integration (DC, 2015). • The Academy of Management stressed the importance of expanding research and teaching interest beyond business to support complex problem (1970) What do we mean by “collaboration”?   • 2. 02/02/2020 2 What do we mean by “collaboration”? • Cross disciplinary: viewing one discipline from another • Multidisciplinary: same problem independent perspectives • Interdisciplinary: integration of disciplines • Transdisciplinary: problem specific integration joint problem solving, science & society Interdisciplinarity: Involves the combining of two or more academic disciplines into one activity. It is creating something new by crossing boundaries, and thinking between them. Farmers on film project Local business woman – Sarah Gayton wants to promote Staffordshire food in the year of Olympics 2012. So • Wrote a bid to get a small sum of money £3K • Working with James Fair (Film Lecturer) we set a brief for 150 L4 (First year) film students. • To produce a 3 minute film Aim To produce a high quality film to support and promote farming, food producers and tourism in Staffordshire for the 2012 Olympics. You will be involved with filming some or all of the following: a. farmers and food producers b. butchers, bakers c. local pubs/hotels that make use of local produce d. farmers markets e. food festivals g.   • 3. 02/02/2020 3 Reflection Creative Arts and Humanities at Staffs Humanities & Performing Arts Art & Design Engineering • One school (CAE) • Two departments • Three subject Areas • 4IR is digitally driven… Get Ahead in CAE… • Interdisciplinary learning • Engaged over 250 voyagers • Explored creativity • Discipline hopping • Technical/digital/design and innovative practices Reflection Hands on Engineering “out of the box thinking which is incredibly useful” “This should be a core module in mech and elec engineering” “ Got my full engagement” “allowed me to use a range of tools and machines in the workshop – would be nice to have all year round” “ Hand on activities with great instruction, got to use some of the universities facilities” “ Practical problem solving will help later on in industry, very engaging and hands-on. Reflection Live Capture “Working cross discipline has allowed us in drama to pilot and expand on our existing provision. Sketching and drawing our activity has allowed rehearsals to be captured in a creative and dynamic manner. I feel much more positive about group activities”. “I enjoyed the freedom we had to explore the task, meeting new people and the staff were friendly”. “It has helped me build confidence working in an unfamiliar environment” “I liked the energy and co-ordinators attitude, we had a really good time. I like the idea of sharing knowledge (and food!)” “It gave me exposure to a new and professional environment” “I have developed my problem-solving, teamwork and communication skills. These will enable me to work and communicate better in a team setting in the future”. “I really liked the opportunity working with students on different courses” “Good opportunity for students to have the chance to design a real space for the public” Reflection Impact • Toolbelt of skills and attributes • Novel innovative roles (don’t exist yet) • Alternative model “Pedagogy” • Blueprint for integrating interdiscipinary in widest sense • Supported core values of university - brilliant and friendly - curious and daring - ambitious and inspirational - PROUD to be Staffs – Civic, inclusive, connected which resulted in well-placed voyagers..
