2. Italian Renaissance
Australia is a young country. It gains its
independent on 1 Jan 1901.
The Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney was
opened in 1874, some 140 years ago. It has a
few European paintings before 19C in the
collection, but enough to cover the major painting
schools in history.
7. Flemish 16C
This painting was painted during the 17C Dutch
Gold Age period. Paul Bril painted mostly
landscape. Many of his paintings were inspired
by Italian landscape.
21. English 18C
Gainsborough (1727-1788) was a very
successful portrait painter. He is also a
landscape painter and he was one of the
founder member of the Royal Society of Arts.

John William Waterhouse (1849 – 1917) was a Pre-
Raphaelite. He painted works, depicting of women
from both ancient Greek mythology and Arthurian
legend.

represented in Australia.

Tom Roberts (1856 – 1931) was an Australian and a key member of the Heidelberg School, also known as Australian
Impressionism. He also painted the Australian ways of life.
