This slideshow show is an introduction to the most significant painters of the West, up to the end of the 19C. There are other painters that I have not been included like Rembrandt, to cut down the length (or size) of the slideshow. Each painter included in the slideshow is represented by a single painting of their work.

2. Van Eyck active 1422-41
Van Eyck was an early
painter who painted
with oil. He is also
credited with painting
with minutely realistic
depictions of surface
effects and natural
light.

Details under the glasses.
It is known that Jan van
Eyck used optical aids to
paint.

6. Bosch 1450-1516
Hieronymus Bosch is
known to had painted about
ten triptychs.
Some interpret the fantasy
landscape, populated by
unusual beings was a
caustic view of the world.
7. Bosch Garden of Earthly Delights 1495-1505
It is Bosch most well-known painting. The centrepiece is sandwiched
between the Garden of Eden and the Last Judgement.
10. Botticelli 1445-1510
Botticelli painted a lot of
Madonna and Child in his career.
He was also the first to paint a
life-size female nude for over
1000 years. The painting creates
the illusion that the newly born
beautiful Venus is about to step
into our world.
13. Leonardo 1452-1519
This is the first of the two nearly
identical paintings with the same title.
This one is in the Louvre, Paris and
the late one is in the National Gallery,
London.

15. Leonardo 1452-1519
Leonardo painted two versions of this painting, in 1483-5 and in 1495-1508.
The one on the left is from his earlier painting, some 12 to 15 years apart.
16. Durer 1471-1528
Durer was a the most well-
known during Renaissance. He
was born in Nuremberg. He
knew many of the Italian
painting of his time e.g
Raphael, Bellini etc. He was
also very successful
commercially.

20. Michelangelo 1475-1564
Michelangelo has a long life. He
lived to nearly 90 year-old. One
of his greatest work is his fresco
the Last Judgement on the wall of
the Sistine Chapel, Vatican. He
was 66 year old when he finished
the fresco.
23. Bruegel the Elder 1525-69
Bruegel the Elder was the most
significant artist of Dutch and
Flemish Renaissance painting.
He was known for his paintings
packed with details of landscapes
and peasant scenes. He was
also a humanist. In many of his
paintings he commented on
human failings and life under the
Spanish colonial rule.
26. Caravaggio 1571-1610
Caravaggio was an Italian
rebel painter. He was
credited as the painter who
painted a dark background,
to dramatize lighting, which
had a formative influence
on Baroque painting.
29. Rubens 1577-1640

Rubens was a Flemish artist and
diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in
southern Netherlands. He is
considered the most influential artist of
the Flemish Baroque tradition.
32. Velazquez 1599-1660
Velazquez was one of
the most successful
painter of all time. He
was part of the Royal
family household of
the Spanish royal
family.

38. Louis David 1748-1825
Jacques-Louis David was the
most prominent artist during
the French Revolution years.
He started his painting style in
the 1780s with his brand of
history painting. His painting in
this slideshow was from this
period of his career.
44. Monet 1840-1926
It is painting of his wife and son.
Claude Monet was the founder of
impressionist painting. His paintings
were how he saw the world around
him, as oppose to how everyone see
the world.
During his long career, he was the
most consistent and prolific in
expressing the philosophy of
impressionism. However, he did
change his style and his paintings
were increasing ‘less precise’ in his
later years.
47. VanGogh 1853-1890

Vincent van Gogh was Dutch. He has
a very short life and died at the age of
37. Most of his works were painted in
the last few years of his life.
Most of his later works were painted
with vivid colours, in a very narrow
range.
