Fowler
UPIC Intern, Summer 2015
Supervisor and Mentor: Dr. Melissa Vogel
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
As the research assistant intern for Dr. Melissa Vogel in
the Department of Anthropology, I have gained a great
deal of experience in the field of archaeology. I have
worked with professionals in the field such as a geologist
and a physicist/archaeologist who works with a company
that uses X-Ray fluorescence technology. I have expanded
my skills and understanding of chemistry, physics,
forensics, and Peru in general. Working for Dr. Vogel has
also expanded my knowledge of the prehistoric people of
Peru. This includes the Casma people that Dr. Vogel
specifically studies, in addition to the Lambayeque,
Moche, Chimu, and Wari.
I worked on
several very challenging projects while working with Dr. Vogel. We
worked to submit a paper to the Journal of Archaeological Science:
Reports. This paper I co-authored and the others I worked on in a
capacity for review from the various journals they were submitted to.
These projects were papers on organics, spindle whorls, metal objects
with lead, and mortuary practices. I also helped Dr. Vogel in the
process of her publishing her second book. I plan to present some of
this information and work at the upcoming Society for American
Archaeologist convention that will happen in April 2016.

SKILLS GAINED
My core technical skills include services
such as working very closely with different
styles of citation. The department provided
exposure to different peer reviewed
journals for the career that I want to work
in and each journal has its on style of
writing and editing. I have been able to
expand my abilities to work with
professionals in the field as well while
working in this position.
MENTOR FEEDBACK
The overall feedback I received from my
mentor was overwhelmingly positive. We
work very well together. While working
with my mentor I am not afraid to receive
constructive criticisms as they have truly
enhanced by abilities in the field that I am
working. Working with peer review
journals requires great attention to detail
and with my mentor’s feedback I feel I
have strongly improved.
UPON GRADUATION
I plan to graduate in the Spring of 2017. I
am planning on going to graduate school
for anthropology, more specifically
archaeology. My goals for this upcoming
Fall are to continue working on the
different publications that I have been a
part of.
