Persuasive essay and Argumentative essay are similar in nature and
thus, often confused to be the same though there exists a difference between
the two. In fact, Persuasive essay and Argumentative essay are two different
types of essays, and the main difference between them is that the persuasive
essay depends on opinions and emotions while an argumentative essay uses
logic and reason. Let us first look at these two types of essays in detail and
then move on to identify the differences between a persuasive essay and an
argumentative essay.

An argumentative essay is a piece of writing that attempts
to convince the readers that the author’s idea is true. This is a
genre of writing that is used to defend or prove a point. A writer
should do a thorough research; gather accurate facts and figures
before writing an argumentative essay. This is more like a debate
written on paper. While writing an argumentative essay, a writer
should be aware of both pros and cons of the argument, and
should try to discredit the opposing view by using evidence.

A persuasive essay is a piece of writing that attempts to convince the
readers to agree with author’s ideas. In this type of essay, the writer can use
his own ideas, opinions and evoke the emotions in the reader in order to
convince them to agree to his opinion. A writer of a persuasive essay needs to
do research, gather evidence, but a clever writer can create a successful essay
without knowing much. This is because; a persuasive writing appeals more to
reader’s emotions rather than minds. In persuasive writing, the writer should
have certain awareness about the audience. For example, opinions and ideas
that could appeal to teenagers may not have the same effect on adults. First
person narration and Second person narration (Ex: In my opinion, I believe,
etc.,) are commonly used as the writer is addressing the audience directly.

Here are some of the effective and commonly used persuasive techniques used by
writers to achieve their purpose.
1. Rhetorical Question
are questions that are asked but not required to be answered. They are
often used to get the audience’s attention, imply certain answers,
emphasize a point, or guide audiences to draw certain conclusions. When a
rhetorical question is asked, an obvious answer is already posed to a
particular issue. You just ask to make the audience think about the same
question and realize that your point is rational, and to disagree with it
seems foolish.

2. Repetition.
To emphasize your point, and reinforce an argument, you can do repetition.
As you keep on repeating words or phrases, it creates a familiarity with your
main point or message. This eventually stays in the mind of your audience
thus making your message more memorable. To do this, choose the key
points that you want to emphasize. Keep on repeating those words
throughout your text or speech, however, remember to do it judiciously.
EXAMPLE: Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark
and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from
the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make iustice a reality
for all of God's children

3. Bandwagon.
This is the technique that would convince a reader to believe in an idea
because the majority or everybody else believes it’s true.
For example: Nine out of 10 students got higher grades because of the
modular learning setup.
The bandwagon fallacy is also sometimes called the appeal to common belief or appeal to the
masses because it's all about getting people to do or think something because “everyone else is
doing it” or “everything else thinks this.”
Example: Everyone is going to get the new smart phone when it comes out this weekend.

4. Appeal to Emotion.
The use of emotive language can help sway the readers
to side with the writer or to do what he says.
For example:
Be thankful that you have more than what you need. Other
children do not even have a roof above their head, but they
study harder than anyone.

5. Appeal to Authority.
The writer needs to establish himself as an
authority in the topic he is writing about by using
facts, figures, and other proofs that would support
his opinions or claims.

KABASALAN SCIENCE AND

6. Attacks
The writer attacks an opponent or an idea. He puts down
persuasion techniques against the opponent or idea.
Attacks can attempt to embarrass or insult an opponent.
Example:
Anyone who judges other people based on race is unfair
and foolish.

7. Clichés
It is a term that has been overused to the extent that
they are commonly understood by
society.
Example:
My wedding day was just the happiest day of my life.
• better safe than sorry.
• you can't judge a book by its cover.

8. Hypothetical evidence
Hypothetical Evidence is based on claims typically
based on a “what if” statement.
Example:
“What if the world ends tomorrow.”

  • 5. Project EASIER Efficient and Accessible School Innovation of E-Teaching Resources KABASALAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL  never brush their teeth again.  give their phone away.  not brush their hair for a week.  making dinner for their family is a bad idea.
  • 6. Project EASIER Efficient and Accessible School Innovation of E-Teaching Resources KABASALAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL Persuasive essay and Argumentative essay are similar in nature and thus, often confused to be the same though there exists a difference between the two. In fact, Persuasive essay and Argumentative essay are two different types of essays, and the main difference between them is that the persuasive essay depends on opinions and emotions while an argumentative essay uses logic and reason. Let us first look at these two types of essays in detail and then move on to identify the differences between a persuasive essay and an argumentative essay.
  • 7. Project EASIER Efficient and Accessible School Innovation of E-Teaching Resources KABASALAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL An argumentative essay is a piece of writing that attempts to convince the readers that the author’s idea is true. This is a genre of writing that is used to defend or prove a point. A writer should do a thorough research; gather accurate facts and figures before writing an argumentative essay. This is more like a debate written on paper. While writing an argumentative essay, a writer should be aware of both pros and cons of the argument, and should try to discredit the opposing view by using evidence.
  • 8. Project EASIER Efficient and Accessible School Innovation of E-Teaching Resources KABASALAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL A persuasive essay is a piece of writing that attempts to convince the readers to agree with author’s ideas. In this type of essay, the writer can use his own ideas, opinions and evoke the emotions in the reader in order to convince them to agree to his opinion. A writer of a persuasive essay needs to do research, gather evidence, but a clever writer can create a successful essay without knowing much. This is because; a persuasive writing appeals more to reader’s emotions rather than minds. In persuasive writing, the writer should have certain awareness about the audience. For example, opinions and ideas that could appeal to teenagers may not have the same effect on adults. First person narration and Second person narration (Ex: In my opinion, I believe, etc.,) are commonly used as the writer is addressing the audience directly.

  • 10. Project EASIER Efficient and Accessible School Innovation of E-Teaching Resources KABASALAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL Here are some of the effective and commonly used persuasive techniques used by writers to achieve their purpose. 1. Rhetorical Question are questions that are asked but not required to be answered. They are often used to get the audience’s attention, imply certain answers, emphasize a point, or guide audiences to draw certain conclusions. When a rhetorical question is asked, an obvious answer is already posed to a particular issue. You just ask to make the audience think about the same question and realize that your point is rational, and to disagree with it seems foolish.
  • 11. Project EASIER Efficient and Accessible School Innovation of E-Teaching Resources KABASALAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL Example:
  • 12. Project EASIER Efficient and Accessible School Innovation of E-Teaching Resources KABASALAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL 2. Repetition. To emphasize your point, and reinforce an argument, you can do repetition. As you keep on repeating words or phrases, it creates a familiarity with your main point or message. This eventually stays in the mind of your audience thus making your message more memorable. To do this, choose the key points that you want to emphasize. Keep on repeating those words throughout your text or speech, however, remember to do it judiciously. EXAMPLE: Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make iustice a reality for all of God's children
  • 13. Project EASIER Efficient and Accessible School Innovation of E-Teaching Resources KABASALAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL 3. Bandwagon. This is the technique that would convince a reader to believe in an idea because the majority or everybody else believes it’s true. For example: Nine out of 10 students got higher grades because of the modular learning setup. The bandwagon fallacy is also sometimes called the appeal to common belief or appeal to the masses because it's all about getting people to do or think something because “everyone else is doing it” or “everything else thinks this.” Example: Everyone is going to get the new smart phone when it comes out this weekend.
  • 14. Project EASIER Efficient and Accessible School Innovation of E-Teaching Resources KABASALAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL 4. Appeal to Emotion. The use of emotive language can help sway the readers to side with the writer or to do what he says. For example: Be thankful that you have more than what you need. Other children do not even have a roof above their head, but they study harder than anyone.
  • 15. Project EASIER Efficient and Accessible School Innovation of E-Teaching Resources KABASALAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL 5. Appeal to Authority. The writer needs to establish himself as an authority in the topic he is writing about by using facts, figures, and other proofs that would support his opinions or claims.
  • 16. Project EASIER Efficient and Accessible School Innovation of E-Teaching Resources KABASALAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL 6. Attacks The writer attacks an opponent or an idea. He puts down persuasion techniques against the opponent or idea. Attacks can attempt to embarrass or insult an opponent. Example: Anyone who judges other people based on race is unfair and foolish.
  • 17. Project EASIER Efficient and Accessible School Innovation of E-Teaching Resources KABASALAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL 7. Clichés It is a term that has been overused to the extent that they are commonly understood by society. Example: My wedding day was just the happiest day of my life. • better safe than sorry. • you can't judge a book by its cover.
  • 18. Project EASIER Efficient and Accessible School Innovation of E-Teaching Resources KABASALAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL 8. Hypothetical evidence Hypothetical Evidence is based on claims typically based on a “what if” statement. Example: “What if the world ends tomorrow.”
